    The 1980 earthquake in southern Italy: rescue of trapped victims and mortality.

    A retrospective survey was undertaken on the health effects of the 1980 earthquake in southern Italy. The study population included 3619 people living in 7 villages situated near the epicentre of the disaster. The overall casualty rate (dead and injured) was 19.7%. Nearly all the deaths (192/202) occurred among trapped people who died before they could be rescued. Eighty per cent of all the trapped people were extricated within 2 days, mostly without the use of sophisticated means. The probability of survival decreased sharply, the longer the time before extrication. The crude mortality during the 18 months following the earthquake was 19.0 per thousand among the injured people who received treatment, and 14.1 per thousand among non-injured people. After age standardization, there was no significant difference between these two figures and the expected mortality figures for the Italian population in normal times (14.4 per thousand). These results stress the importance of providing rescue activities in the first 48 hours after the impact. Strengthening the self-reliance of the community in disaster preparedness is suggested as the best way to improve the effectiveness of relief operations. In disaster-prone areas, training and education in methods of rescue should be an integral part of any primary health care programme

    ECCC TEST PROGRAMME AND DATA ASSESSMENT ON GTD111 CREEP RUPTURE, STRAIN AND DUCTILITY

    GTD111, a creep resistant Ni-based superalloy developed by GE, is widely used in land-based gas turbine first stage blades. However, there is little published information on its creep properties and microstructure. The European Creep Collaborative Committee (ECCC) Working Group 3C consequently selected GTD111 as a model material for testing and complementary data assessment. The aim of this paper is to present the results from the ECCC test program and data assessment, and to compare equiaxed (EA) and directionally solidified (DS) material performance. Testing and metallographic laboratories from six European nations collaborated to produce strain monitored creep rupture data on four EA and DS materials out to beyond 10,000 hours within a wide range of temperatures, 850-950°C, and stresses, 293-99 MPa. Available (generally short term) results from other sources were also included in the compiled, small but viable, 51-test data set. Assessment was carried out by three different assessors using different tools and adopting different prediction models. Conventional ECCC post-assessment techniques and novel “back-fitting” methods were used to identify a preferred model. It was shown that assessing all the EA and DS data together can lead to non-conservative predictions for EA materials, but separating the two classes creates small data subsets which cannot be modelled effectively. As a pragmatic compromise, the DS data and those EA data which also showed good ductility were included in a final "ductile GTD111" assessment. The resulting creep rupture material models and rupture strength predictions are presented up to 3 times the longest test duration. It was then shown that the performance of lower ductility EA materials can also be predicted effectively with the "ductile" model by truncating the rupture time at the measured fracture strain. For this exercise, a creep strain model based on rupture and time to strain data was fitted. In parallel, microstructural examination was performed to characterize the damage modes involved in the low ductility failures. It was thereby shown that the creep rupture strength shortfall of an EA material compared to its DS equivalent is not a constant factor, but is primarily governed by the reduced creep ductility.     Experimental and modeling study of the pyrolysis and combustion of 2-methyl-tetrahydrofuran

However, their pyrolysis and combustion chemistry has not been well established. In this work, the pyrolysis and combustion chemistry of 2-methyl-tetrahydrofuran (MTHF) was investigated through experiments and detailed kinetic modeling. Pyrolysis experiments were performed in a dedicated plug flow reactor at 170 kPa, temperatures between 900 and 1100 K and a N-2 (diluent) to MTHF molar ratio of 10. The combustion chemistry of MTHF was investigated by measuring mole fraction profiles of stable species in premixed flat flames at 6.7 kPa and equivalence ratios 0.7, 1.0 and 1.3 and by determining laminar burning velocities of MTHF/air flat flames with unburned gas temperatures of 298, 358 and 398 K and equivalence ratios between 0.6 and 1.6. Furthermore, a kinetic model for pyrolysis and combustion of MTHF was developed, which contains a detailed description of the reactions of MTHF and its derived radicals with the aid of new high-level theoretical calculations. Model calculated mole fraction profiles and laminar burning velocities are in relatively good agreement with the obtained experimental data. At the applied pyrolysis conditions, unimolecular decomposition of MTHF by scission of the methyl group and concerted ring opening to 4-penten-1-ol dominates over scission of the ring bonds; the latter reactions were significant in tetrahydrofuran pyrolysis. MTHF is mainly consumed by hydrogen abstraction reactions. Subsequent decomposition of the resulting radicals by beta-scission results in the observed product spectrum including small alkenes, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and ketene. In the studied flames, unimolecular ring opening of MTHF is insignificant and consumption of MTHF through radical chemistry dominates. Recombination of 2-oxo-ethyl and 2-oxo-propyl, primary radicals in MTHF decomposition, with hydrogen atoms and carbon-centered radicals results in a wide range of oxygenated molecules.     Injury epidemiology after the 2001 Gujarat earthquake in India: a retrospective analysis of injuries treated at a rural hospital in the Kutch district immediately after the disaster

    The number of injured far exceeds those dead and the average injury to mortality ratio in earthquakes stands at 3:1. Immediate effective medical response significantly influences injury outcomes and thus the overall health impact of earthquakes. Inadequate or mismanagement of injuries may lead to disabilities. The lack of precise data from immediate aftermath is seen as a remarkable weak point in disaster epidemiology and warrants evidence generation.To analyze the epidemiology of injuries and the treatment imparted at a secondary rural hospital in the Kutch district, Gujarat, India following the January 26, 2001 earthquake.Discharge reports of patients admitted to the hospital over 10 weeks were analyzed retrospectively for earthquake-related injuries.Orthopedic injuries, (particularly fractures of the lower limbs) were predominant and serious injuries like head, chest, abdominal, and crush syndrome were minimal. Wound infections were reported in almost 20% of the admitted cases. Surgical procedures were more common than conservative treatment. The most frequently performed surgical procedures were open reduction with internal fixation and cleaning and debridement of contaminated wounds. Four secondary deaths and 102 transfers to tertiary care due to complications were reported.The injury epidemiology reported in this study is in general agreement with most other studies reporting injury epidemiology except higher incidence of distal orthopedic injuries particularly to the lower extremities. We also found that young males were more prone to sustaining injuries. These results warrant further research. Inconsistent data reporting procedures against the backdrop of inherent disaster data incompleteness calls for urgent standardization of reporting earthquake injuries for evidence-based response policy planning

    Geographical Detector-Based Risk Assessment of the Under-Five Mortality in the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake, China

    On 12 May, 2008, a devastating earthquake registering 8.0 on the Richter scale occurred in Sichuan Province, China, taking tens of thousands of lives and destroying the homes of millions of people. Many of the deceased were children, particular children less than five years old who were more vulnerable to such a huge disaster than the adult. In order to obtain information specifically relevant to further researches and future preventive measures, potential risk factors associated with earthquake-related child mortality need to be identified. We used four geographical detectors (risk detector, factor detector, ecological detector, and interaction detector) based on spatial variation analysis of some potential factors to assess their effects on the under-five mortality. It was found that three factors are responsible for child mortality: earthquake intensity, collapsed house, and slope. The study, despite some limitations, has important implications for both researchers and policy makers
