Reforming the banks in the UK : an impact assessment of the draft bill and alternative capital requirements
On Friday, 12 October 2012 the UK Government published a draft of the banking reform bill in order to implement "key elements" of the recommendations put forward by the Independent Commission on Banking (henceforth ICB) led by Sir John Vickers. This is the first piece of legislation revising the regulation of the financial sector. Banks will be required to comply fully with ICB recommendations by 2019. [...] The HM Treasury estimates that by implementing the ICB recommendations, the requirements to increased capital could be met by increasing by 5 per cent the overall equity capital within the industry. Arguments have been made that these new capital restrictions, in that they surpass international requirements, might contribute to reduce competitiveness for the UK banking sector. Others have called for a stricter regulation to increase stability. In this regard, the aim of this research is to analyse whether alterations in levels of the capital requirements in the ICB recommendations will have a substantial effect on the UK economy, furthermore how different levels of capital requirements might impact the stability of the banking sector
Polarisation studies of amine salts and related compounds
In benzene solution the dielectric polarization and dipole moments have been measured for a number of tertiary and quaternary alkylammonium salts, and for some of the former the infrared absorption spectra have also been studied. The state in solution of the tertiary salts can be formulated by the equilibrium: [equation] Since the equilibrium between Steps 1 and 2 is concentration dependent, and that between steps 2 and 3 is not, and also because the equilibrium is shifted to the right on increasing acid strength, the polarization changes with both these variables. At low concentrations and for weak acids the polarization increases non-linearly with increasing concentration and acid strength. As this increases, a progressively larger part of the plot becomes linear and takes on anincreasingly negative slope for the stronger acids. The latter effect is due to polyions. From the polarization variation with concentration, the overall equilibrium constant between unassociated acid and amine and associated species has been evaluated; and by some assumptions as to the values of the dipole moments of hydrogen bonded species and ion pairs, and were estimated. Some of the quaternary salts showed a marked decrease of polarisation with concentration owing to association of the ion pairs; and a modified procedure, used by Pohl, Hobbs and Gross in studies of carboxylic acid dimerization, has been employed in the evaluation of the dipole moments.By an extension of Debye's theory the charge distances in ion pairs have been calculated and the results are in good agreement with the corresponding Bjerrum distances. The infrared measurements showed presence of free acid and amine, hydrogen bonded species and ionic species in a measure predicted by the above equilibrium.<p
Surface-peaked medium sensitivity of the optical potential: an exact result
Microscopic optical model potentials for elastic hadron-nucleus scattering usually take the form of a convolution of a two-body effective interaction with the target ground-state mixed density. Within the Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone gmatrix approach for the effective interaction, nuclear medium effects are made explicit by means spatial integrals throughout the bulk of the nucleus. In this contribution we discuss a novel and exact approach to track down the manifestation of intrinsic nuclear medium effects. After examining the momentumand coordinate-space structure of a two-body effective interaction âspherically symmetric in its mean coordinateâ it is demonstrated that the intrinsic medium effects in the optical potential depend solely on the gradient of a reduced interaction. This feature implies the confinement of intrinsic medium effects to regions where the density varies most, i.e. the nuclear surface. This finding may be of special significance in the study of nuclear collisions sensitive to the peripheric structure of nuclei. We illustrate some of its implications in the context of 10Be + p elastic scattering at 39.1A MeV
Functional medium-dependence of the nonrelativistic optical model potential
By examining the structure in momentum and coordinate space of a two-body
interaction spherically symmetric in its local coordinate, we demonstrate that
it can be disentangled into two distinctive contributions. One of them is a
medium-independent and momentum-conserving term, whereas the other is
functionally --and exclusively-- proportional to the radial derivative of the
reduced matrix element. As example, this exact result was applied to the
unabridged optical potential in momentum space, leading to an explicit
separation between the medium-free and medium-dependent contributions. The
latter does not depend on the strength of the reduced effective interaction but
only on its variations with respect to the density. The modulation of radial
derivatives of the density enhances the effect in the surface and suppresses it
in the saturated volume. The generality of this result may prove to be useful
for the study of surface-sensitive phenomena.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

Fysisk aktiv lĂŠring i matematikk
This master thesis is a result of a wish to learn more about physical active learning, such that I can implement it in my own lessons as a future teacher. The title of this thesis is Physical Active Learning in Mathemathics, and the research was based on the following question: How do teachers facilitate physically active learning in mathematics?
In order to answer this question, a method triangulation was carried out between semi-structural qualitative research interviews and observation of teachers and pupils in physically active learning (PAL) contexts. The informantsâ experiences from teaching with PAL were analyzed and discussed against a theoretical framework that laid the basis for the study. Among other things, various perceptions related to PAL, planning, as well as previous research on PAL are explained. This was used to interpret and understand the experiences and descriptions the informants told me about.
The findings in the thesis are that the informants have similar experiences with PAL in mathematics. The informants define the term in the same way but practice it differently. They find that the pupils have increased motivation and participation in PAL teaching, compared to the more traditional teaching where the students are sedentary. I get access to the informantsâ experiences and perceptions related to PAL as a method in mathematics and an insight into how they plan for PAL. The movements and activities used by the informants in PAL show signs of learning in motion. Bridging is a term that is linked to the planning of PAL activities. This involves how the teachers should be able to move across bridges so that the pupils are able to understand connections between the physical things that occur in the lessons and the theoretical things they find in their textbooks
Multisensory integration: does haptics improve tumour delineation?
The ability to use touch in addition to vision when searching for anomalies and
differences in texture is well known to be beneficial to human perception in general. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the potential benefit of using a haptic
signal in conjunction with visual images to improve detection and delineation of
tumours in medical imaging data. One of the key issues with tumour delineation in
the field today is the interclinician variance in delineating tumours for diagnostics
and treatment, where even clinicians who have similar sensitivity and precision
levels tend to delineate widely different underlying shapes. Through three experiments we investigate whether the ability to touch a medical image improves
tumour delineation. In the first experiment, we show that combined visuohaptic cues significantly improves performance for signal detection of a 2D Gaussian
embedded in a noisy background. In the second experiment, we found that the
relative dissimilarity of different images per modality did not systematically decrease precision in a two-alternative forced choice (2AFC) slant discrimination
task, in a spatially coaligned visuohaptic rig. In the third and final experiment
we successfully found that observers are significantly better at delineating generated âtumoursâ in synthetic âmedical imagesâ when the haptic representation of the
image is present compared to drawing on a flat surface, in a spatially coaligned
visuohaptic rig
Hva skjer nÄr lÊrere pÄ smÄskoletrinnet reflekterer kritisk over egen leseleksepraksis i norskfaget?
Denne masteroppgaven handler om lekser, mer spesifikt leselekser i norskfaget. Studien tar

Clutch
Clutch is the title of the creative portion of my thesis as well as the name of my theory 'clutch' which I outline in the preface section. The purpose of the clutch theory is to recognize modes of inspiration in the body, heart and mind so that the poet can consciously move beyond passive receptivity to engage inspiration more fully. Mechanically, to "clutch" does not mean to create inspiration, but it is the opportunistic, spirited encouragement of these moments of inspiration and, more importantly, the direction of the artist's own response in moving from inspiration to creation. The clutch process unfolds through three centers: body, heart and mind, where we initially encounter inspiration. And, through a discussion of three notable poets' work, Henri Cole, Li-Young Lee and T.S. Eliot, the relationship between a completed work and clutch as a process further explains the boundaries of each mode
