Digital storytelling nella formazione iniziale dei docenti. Potenzialità e limiti nella pratica educativa

This article presents the results of a pilot study conducted at Ca’ Foscari University, in which a group of teachers in pre-service education (lower and upper school) pioneered the use of digital storytelling, through a workshop. The study aimed to explore and examine the perceptions and reflections of teachers in the use of Digital Storytelling, on its possible application in the classroom, and finally the possible obstacles that could hinder its use. The results of this research suggest that, although almost all teachers involved have positive feelings about the use of digital storytelling, half of them reported the presence of substantial barriers to its effective and continuative application (such as availability of time, curriculum’s limits, limited access to technology, and the situation of the overall school system ). This outcome was recorded in spite of the teachers declaring to be positively affected by the method, and that they noticed an improvement in their professional skills together with a higher level of motivation and commitment.

development of a deep convolutional neural network to predict grading of canine meningiomas from magnetic resonance images

Abstract An established deep neural network (DNN) based on transfer learning and a newly designed DNN were tested to predict the grade of meningiomas from magnetic resonance (MR) images in dogs and to determine the accuracy of classification of using pre- and post-contrast T1-weighted (T1W), and T2-weighted (T2W) MR images. The images were randomly assigned to a training set, a validation set and a test set, comprising 60%, 10% and 30% of images, respectively. The combination of DNN and MR sequence displaying the highest discriminating accuracy was used to develop an image classifier to predict the grading of new cases. The algorithm based on transfer learning using the established DNN did not provide satisfactory results, whereas the newly designed DNN had high classification accuracy. On the basis of classification accuracy, an image classifier built on the newly designed DNN using post-contrast T1W images was developed. This image classifier correctly predicted the grading of 8 out of 10 images not included in the data set

Values And Dsm-5: Looking At The Debate On Attenuated Psychosis Syndrome.

Although values have increasingly received attention in psychiatric literature over the last three decades, their role has been only partially acknowledged in psychiatric classification endeavors. The review process of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) received harsh criticism, and was even considered secretive by some authors. Also, it lacked an official discussion of values at play. In this perspective paper we briefly discuss the interplay of some values in the scientific and non-scientific debate around one of the most debated DSM-5 category proposals, the Attenuated Psychosis Syndrome (APS). Then, we point out some ethical consequences of a facts-plus-values perspective in psychiatric classification. Different stakeholders participated in the APS-debate and for analytical purposes we divided them into four groups: (i) researchers in the field of high-risk mental states; (ii) the DSM-5 Psychotic Disorders Work Group; (iii) patient, carers and advocacy groups; and (iv) external stakeholders, not related to the previous groups, but which also publicly expressed their opinions about APS inclusion in DSM-5. We found that each group differently stressed the role of values we examined in the APS-debate. These values were ethical, but also epistemic, political, economic and ontological. The prominence given to some values, and the lack of discussion about others, generated divergent positions among stakeholders in the debate. As exemplified by the APS discussion, although medicine is primarily an ethical endeavor, values of different kinds that take part in it also shape to a large extent the profession. Thus, it may be strategic to openly discuss values at play in the elaboration of diagnostic tools and classificatory systems. This task, more than scientifically or politically significant, is ethically important.17

A Frailty Index based on clinical data to quantify mortality risk in dogs

    Get PDF
Frailty is defined as a decline in an organism's physiological reserves resulting in increased vulnerability to stressors. In humans, a single continuous variable, the so-called Frailty Index (FI), can be obtained by multidimensionally assessing the biological complexity of an ageing organism. Here, we evaluate this variability in dogs and compare it to the data available for humans. In dogs, there was a moderate correlation between age and the FI, and the distribution of the FI increased with age. Deficit accumulation was strongly related to mortality. The effect of age, when combined with the FI, was negligible. No sex-related differences were evident. The FI could be considered in epidemiological studies and/or experimental trials to account for the potential confounding effects of the health status of individual dogs. The age-related deficit accumulation reported in dogs is similar to that demonstrated in humans. Therefore, dogs might represent an excellent model for human aging studies

From the stigma of manic depression to the encouraging of treatment of bipolar disorder: the evolution of the approach in two lay media publications over the last 40 years

OBJECTIVE: To examine the evolution over the past 40 years of the midia approach to bipolar disorder. METHODS: A search was performed using the terms bipolar disorder and manic-depressive in the Brazilian magazine Veja and in American newspaper The New York Times. A sample of 40 texts from each source was analyzed. The texts were divided into two groups, one dated of the years between 1970 and 1999 and the second from 2000 to 2009. RESULTS: Between 1970 and 1999 it is most often used the term manic-depressive, but in the decade of 2000-2009, the term bipolar disorder prevails widely. In addition, ol-der articles, which predominantly use the term manic-depressive tend to be more stigmatizing and less informative. Recent articles, on the other hand, feature more often the term bipolar disorder and tend to encourage treatment seeking. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that the midia approach to bipolar disorder, in comparison with the one given to manic-depressive psychosis, is characterized by a closer assimilation of the biomedical model.OBJETIVO: Investigar a evolução ao longo dos últimos 40 anos da assimilação midiática do transtorno bipolar.
