    Distributed key man-agement in dynamic outsourced databases: A trie-based approach

    Abstract The decision to outsource databases is strategic in many organizations due to the increasing costs of internally managing large volumes of information. The sensitive nature of this information raises the need for powerful mechanisms to protect it against unauthorized disclosure. Centralized encryption to access control at the data owner level has been proposed as one way of handling this issue. However, its prohibitive costs renders it impractical and inflexible. A distributed cryptographic approach has been suggested as a promising alternative, where keys are distributed to users on the basis of their assigned privileges. But in this case, key management becomes problematic in the face of frequent database updates and remains an open issue. In this paper, we present a novel approach based on Binary Tries 1 . By exploiting the intrinsic properties of these data structures, key management complexity, and thus its cost, is significantly reduced. Changes to the Binary Trie structure remain limited in the face of frequent updates. Preliminary experimental analysis demonstrates the validity and the effectiveness of our approach

    Sight Distance Standards Based On Observational Data Risk Evaluation Of Passing

    The paper presents an application of a reliability analysis for evaluating the risk associated with passing sight distance (PSD) standards in terms of the expected probability of noncompliance. Calculation of PSD is required to determine where drivers can safely execute passing maneuvers. Traditional PSD standards are based on deterministic, theoretical models, which are calibrated with conservative percentile values for uncertain design inputs to account for uncertainty. The PSD standards do not provide information about the risk of deviation from them. Reliability analysis is a technique that is based on limit state design and that accounts for the propagation of variability from input random parameters to the design outputs. A total of 1,098 passing maneuvers were observed on several two-lane highways in Spain; two data collection methodologies were used: external observations and an instrumented vehicle. The most significant factors affecting PSD were impeding-vehicle speed, passing-vehicle acceleration, and head-ways between impeding and passing vehicles. A uniform acceleration model described the passing-vehicle trajectory. The characterized input parameters and the passing model were used to perform a reliability analysis. The results showed the probability of noncompliance in different scenarios, defined as the proportion of cases in which the required PSD would exceed the available sight distance. American and Spanish PSD standards were evaluated. Geometric design standards presented a probability of noncompliance of about 0.15, whereas some marking standards had a probability of noncompliance exceeding 0.85. These standards may be associated with higher risk levels if they are followed by drivers.     Segond's fracture: a biomechanical cadaveric study using navigation

    Background Segond’s fracture is a well-recognised radiological sign of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear. While previous studies evaluated the role of the anterolateral ligament (ALL) and complex injuries on rotational stability of the knee, there are no studies on the biomechanical effect of Segond’s fracture in an ACL deficient knee. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a Segond’s fracture on knee rotation stability as evaluated by a navigation system in an ACL deficient knee. Materials and methods Three different conditions were tested on seven knee specimens: intact knee, ACL deficient knee and ACL deficient knee with Segond’s fracture. Static and dynamic measurements of anterior tibial translation (ATT) and axial tibial rotation (ATR) were recorded by the navigation system (2.2 OrthoPilot ACL navigation system B. Braun Aesculap, Tuttlingen, Germany). Results Static measurements at 30 showed that the mean ATT at 30 of knee flexion was 5.1 ± 2.7 mm in the ACL intact condition, 14.3 ± 3.1 mm after ACL cut (P = 0.005), and 15.2 ± 3.6 mm after Segond’s fracture (P = 0.08). The mean ATR at 30 of knee flexion was 20.7 ± 4.8 in the ACL intact condition, 26.9 ± 4.1 in the ACL deficient knee (P[0.05) and 30.9 ± 3.8 after Segond’s fracture (P = 0.005). Dynamic measurements during the pivot-shift showed that the mean ATT was 7.2 ± 2.7 mm in the intact knee, 9.1 ± 3.3 mm in the ACL deficient knee(P = 0.04) and 9.7 ± 4.3 mm in the ACL deficient knee with Segond’s fracture (P = 0.07). The mean ATR was 9.6 ± 1.8 in the intact knee, 12.3 ± 2.3 in the ACL deficient knee (P[0.05) and 19.1 ± 3.1 in the ACL deficient knee with Segond’s lesion (P = 0.016). Conclusion An isolated lesion of the ACL only affects ATT during static and dynamic measurements, while the addition of Segond’s fracture has a significant effect on ATR in both static and dynamic execution of the pivot-shift test, as evaluated with the aid of navigation

    Stability and Evolution of Supernova Fallback Disks

    We show that thin accretion disks made of Carbon or Oxygen are subject to the same thermal ionization instability as Hydrogen and Helium disks. We argue that the instability applies to disks of any metal content. The relevance of the instability to supernova fallback disks probably means that their power-law evolution breaks down when they first become neutral. We construct simple analytical models for the viscous evolution of fallback disks to show that it is possible for these disks to become neutral when they are still young (ages of a few 10^3 to 10^4 years), compact in size (a few 10^9 cm to 10^11 cm) and generally accreting at sub-Eddington rates (Mdot ~ a few 10^14 - 10^18 g/s). Based on recent results on the nature of viscosity in the disks of close binaries, we argue that this time may also correspond to the end of the disk activity period. Indeed, in the absence of a significant source of viscosity in the neutral phase, the entire disk will likely turn to dust and become passive. We discuss various applications of the evolutionary model, including anomalous X-ray pulsars and young radio pulsars. Our analysis indicates that metal-rich fallback disks around newly-born neutron stars and black holes become neutral generally inside the tidal truncation radius (Roche limit) for planets, at \~10^11 cm. Consequently, the efficiency of the planetary formation process in this context will mostly depend on the ability of the resulting disk of rocks to spread via collisions beyond the Roche limit. It appears easier for the merger product of a doubly degenerate binary, whether it is a massive white dwarf or a neutron star, to harbor planets because it can spread beyond the Roche limit before becoming neutral.[Abridged]Comment: 34 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Remodelling by early-life stress of NMDA receptor-dependent synaptic plasticity in a gene-environment rat model of depression.

    An animal model of depression combining genetic vulnerability and early-life stress (ELS) was prepared by submitting the Flinders Sensitive Line (FSL) rats to a standard paradigm of maternal separation. We analysed hippocampal synaptic transmission and plasticity in vivo and ionotropic receptors for glutamate in FSL rats, in their controls Flinders Resistant Line (FRL) rats, and in both lines subjected to ELS. A strong inhibition of long-term potentiation (LTP) and lower synaptic expression of NR1 subunit of the NMDA receptor were found in FSL rats. Remarkably, ELS induced a remodelling of synaptic plasticity only in FSL rats, reducing inhibition of LTP; this was accompanied by marked increase of synaptic NR1 subunit and GluR2/3 subunits of AMPA receptors. Chronic treatment with escitalopram inhibited LTP in FRL rats, but this effect was attenuated by prior ELS. The present results suggest that early gene-environment interactions cause lifelong synaptic changes affecting functional and molecular aspects of plasticity, partly reversed by antidepressant treatments

    Experimental assessment of crack prediction methods in international design codes for edge restrained walls

    Through cracking resulting from external restraint of early-age thermal and long-term shrinkage strain is a significant issue in the construction industry as it causes leakage in water retaining and resisting structures. Concerningly, a recent field study found restraint induced crack widths to frequently exceed crack widths calculated in accordance with UK design practice (BS EN 1992-3 and CIRIA C766). Due to a lack of pertinent data, the reasons for this are uncertain. This paper compares measured and predicted crack widths in a series of 12 full-scale edge restrained walls constructed in the laboratory. The tests examine the influence on cracking of key parameters including concrete mix design, wall reinforcement ratio, wall aspect ratio and relative wall to base cross-sectional area. The measured and calculated crack widths are compared at first cracking and at the end of monitoring. Two types of behaviour were noted in the tests, dependent on when the first cracks formed. Cracking either occurred at early age, within 24 h of stripping the formwork, or later due to restraint of combined early age thermal contraction and shrinkage. The final crack widths were greatest, by a considerable margin, in walls where cracks formed at early age, despite the initial cracks being very narrow. BS EN 1992-3 gives the best estimates of crack width in the two walls that cracked at early age. Crack widths in these walls were significantly underestimated by C766. In the other 10 walls, which cracked later, C766 tends to give the best estimate of crack width

    The Helium-Rich Cataclysmic Variable ES Ceti

    We report photometry of the helium-rich cataclysmic variable ES Ceti during 2001-2004. The star is roughly stable at V ~ 17.0 and has a light curve dominated by a single period of 620 s, which remains measurably constant over the 3 year baseline. The weight of evidence suggests that this is the true orbital period of the underlying binary, not a "superhump" as initially assumed. We report GALEX ultraviolet magnitudes, which establish a very blue flux distribution (F_nu ~ nu^1.3), and therefore a large bolometric correction. Other evidence (the very strong He II 4686 emission, and a ROSAT detection in soft X-rays) also indicates a strong EUV source, and comparison to helium-atmosphere models suggests a temperature of 130+-10 kK. For a distance of 350 pc, we estimate a luminosity of (0.8-1.7)x10^34 erg/s, yielding a mass accretion rate of (2-4)x10^-9 M_sol/yr onto an assumed 0.7 M_sol white dwarf. This appears to be about as expected for white dwarfs orbiting each other in a 10 minute binary, assuming that mass transfer is powered by gravitational radiation losses. We estimate mean accretion rates for other helium-rich cataclysmic variables, and find that they also follow the expected M-dot ~ P_o^-5 relation. There is some evidence (the lack of superhumps, and the small apparent size of the luminous region) that the mass transfer stream in ES Cet directly strikes the white dwarf, rather than circularizing to form an accretion disk.Comment: PDF, 26 pages, 3 tables, 9 figures; accepted, in press, to appear February 2005, PASP; more info at http://cba.phys.columbia.edu

    Gender perspectives on views and preferences of older people on exercise to prevent falls: a systematic mixed studies review

    Background: To offer fall prevention exercise programs that attract older people of both sexes there is a need to understand both womens and mens views and preferences regarding these programs. This paper aims to systematically review the literature to explore any underlying gender perspectives or gender interpretations on older peoples views or preferences regarding uptake and adherence to exercise to prevent falls. Methods: A review of the literature was carried out using a convergent qualitative design based on systematic searches of seven electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Amed, PsycINFO, Scopus, PEDro, and OTseeker). Two investigators identified eligible studies. Each included article was read by at least two authors independently to extract data into tables. Views and preferences reported were coded and summarized in themes of facilitators and barriers using a thematic analysis approach. Results: Nine hundred and nine unique studies were identified. Twenty five studies met the criteria for inclusion. Only five of these contained a gender analysis of mens and womens views on fall prevention exercises. The results suggests that both women and men see women as more receptive to and in more need of fall prevention messages. The synthesis from all 25 studies identified six themes illustrating facilitators and six themes describing barriers for older people either starting or adhering to fall prevention exercise. The facilitators were: support from professionals or family; social interaction; perceived benefits; a supportive exercise context; feelings of commitment; and having fun. Barriers were: practical issues; concerns about exercise; unawareness; reduced health status; lack of support; and lack of interest. Considerably more women than men were included in the studies. Conclusion: Although there is plenty of information on the facilitators and barriers to falls prevention exercise in older people, there is a distinct lack of studies investigating differences or similarities in older womens and mens views regarding fall prevention exercise. In order to ensure that fall prevention exercise is appealing to both sexes and that the inclusion of both men and women are encouraged, more research is needed to find out whether gender differences exists and whether practitioners need to offer a range of opportunities and support strategies to attract both women and men to falls prevention exercise.Funding Agencies|Swedish Research Council [2015-03481]; Strategic Research Programme in Care Sciences, Umea University; Karolinska Institute, Sweden; Umea University</p

    Arbitrarily Degenerate Helium White Dwarfs as Donors in AM CVn Binaries

    We apply the Deloye & Bildsten (2003) isentropic models for donors in ultracompact low-mass X-ray binaries to the AM CVn population of ultracompact, interacting binaries. The mass-radius relations of these systems' donors in the mass range of interest (M_2<0.1 \msun) are not single-valued, but parameterized by the donor's specific entropy. This produces a range in the relationships between system observables, such as orbital period, \Porb, and mass transfer rate, \Mdot. For a reasonable range in donor specific entropy, \Mdot can range over several orders of magnitude at fixed \Porb. We determine the unique relation between \Mdot and M2M_2 in the AM CVn systems with known donor to accretor mass ratios, q=M2/M1q=M_2/M_1. We use structural arguments, as well as each system's photometric behavior, to place limits on \Mdot and M2M_2 in each. Most systems allow a factor of about 3 variation in \Mdot, although V803 Cen, if the current estimates of its qq are accurate, is an exception and must have M_2 \approx 0.02 \msun and \Mdot \approx 10^{-10} \msun yr−1^{-1}. Our donor models also constrain each donor's core temperature, TcT_c, range and correlate TcT_c with M2M_2. We examine how variations in donor specific entropy across the white dwarf family \citep{nele01a} of AM CVn systems affects this population's current galactic distribution. Allowing for donors that are not fully degenerate produces a shift in systems towards longer \Porb and higher \Mdot increasing the parameter space in which these systems can be found. This shift increases the fraction of systems whose \Porb is long enough that their gravity wave (GW) signal is obscured by the background of detached double white dwarf binaries that dominate the GW spectrum below a frequency ≈2\approx 2 mHz.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, uses emulateapj.cls.     Dietary soy and meat proteins induce distinct physiological and gene expression changes in rats

    This study reports on a comprehensive comparison of the effects of soy and meat proteins given at the recommended level on physiological markers of metabolic syndrome and the hepatic transcriptome. Male rats were fed semi-synthetic diets for 1 wk that differed only regarding protein source, with casein serving as reference. Body weight gain and adipose tissue mass were significantly reduced by soy but not meat proteins. The insulin resistance index was improved by soy, and to a lesser extent by meat proteins. Liver triacylglycerol contents were reduced by both protein sources, which coincided with increased plasma triacylglycerol concentrations. Both soy and meat proteins changed plasma amino acid patterns. The expression of 1571 and 1369 genes were altered by soy and meat proteins respectively. Functional classification revealed that lipid, energy and amino acid metabolic pathways, as well as insulin signaling pathways were regulated differently by soy and meat proteins. Several transcriptional regulators, including NFE2L2, ATF4, Srebf1 and Rictor were identified as potential key upstream regulators. These results suggest that soy and meat proteins induce distinct physiological and gene expression responses in rats and provide novel evidence and suggestions for the health effects of different protein sources in human diets
