Mitigation of salt stress in lettuce by a biostimulant that protects the root absorption zone and improves biochemical responses
Horticultural crops constantly face abiotic stress factors such as salinity, which have intensified in recent years due to accelerated climate change, significantly affecting their yields and profitability. Under these conditions, it has become necessary to implement effective and sustainable solutions to guarantee agricultural productivity and food security. The influence of BALOX®, a biostimulant of plant origin, was tested on the responses to salinity of Lactuca sativa L. var. longifolia plants exposed to salt concentrations up to 150 mM NaCl, evaluating different biometric and biochemical properties after 25 days of treatment. Control plants were cultivated under the same conditions but without the biostimulant treatment. An in situ analysis of root characteristics using a non-destructive, real-time method was also performed. The salt stress treatments inhibited plant growth, reduced chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, and increased the concentrations of Na+ and Cl- in roots and leaves while reducing those of Ca2+. BALOX® application had a positive effect because it stimulated plant growth and the level of Ca2+ and photosynthetic pigments. In addition, it reduced the content of Na+ and Cl- in the presence and the absence of salt. The biostimulant also reduced the salt-induced accumulation of stress biomarkers, such as proline, malondialdehyde (MDA), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Therefore, BALOX® appears to significantly reduce osmotic, ionic and oxidative stress levels in salt-treated plants. Furthermore, the analysis of the salt treatments’ and the biostimulant’s direct effects on roots indicated that BALOX®’s primary mechanism of action probably involves improving plant nutrition, even under severe salt stress conditions, by protecting and stimulating the root absorption zone

Evaluation of Drought Responses in Two <i>Tropaeolum</i> Species Used in Landscaping through Morphological and Biochemical Markers
One of the most important challenges horticultural crops confront is drought, particularly in regions such as the Mediterranean basin, where water supplies are usually limited and will become even scarcer due to global warming. Therefore, the selection and diversification of stress-tolerant cultivars are becoming priorities of contemporary ornamental horticulture. This study explored the impact of water stress on two Tropaeolum species frequently used in landscaping. Young plants obtained by seed germination were exposed to moderate water stress (half the water used in the control treatments) and severe water stress (complete withholding of irrigation) for 30 days. Plant responses to these stress treatments were evaluated by determining several growth parameters and biochemical stress markers. The latter were analysed by spectrophotometric methods and, in some cases, by non-destructive measurements using an optical sensor. The statistical analysis of the results indicated that although the stress responses were similar in these two closely related species, T. minus performed better under control and intermediate water stress conditions but was more susceptible to severe water stress. On the other hand, T. majus had a stronger potential for adaptation to soil water scarcity, which may be associated with its reported expansion and naturalisation in different regions of the world. The variations in proline and malondialdehyde concentrations were the most reliable biochemical indicators of water stress effects. The present study also showed a close relationship between the patterns of variation of flavonoid and chlorophyll contents obtained by sensor-based and spectrophotometric methods
Cintura hipertrigliceridémica e hipertensión arterial en adultos: una revisión sistemática y metaanálisis: Hypertriglyceridemic waist and arterial hypertension in adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Objective: To develop a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the association between hypertriglyceridemic waist (CHTG) and arterial hypertension (HBP) in adults.
Materials: The present study is a systematic review (SR) with meta-analysis of analytical cross-sectional observational studies. Search strategies will be used in different databases, which will be Pubmed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Embase. The qualitative analysis was presented in a table with the characteristics of each study. For quantitative analysis, random-effects meta-analysis was performed due to the heterogeneity of the studies. These variables were compared using Odds Ratios (OR) as a measure of association with their corresponding 95% confidence interval.
Results: Five studies were included for statistical analysis. Overall, a statistically significant association was found between both variables (OR: 1.36; 95% CI 1.07 to 1.71). In turn, there was a high heterogeneity (I squared 92%).
Conclusions: This SR found that CHTG is associated with the presence of hypertension. However, given the few studies found, it is recommended to carry out more primary studies with a prospective design before carrying out a next SR on the subject, and with standardized cut-off points to make a more homogeneous comparability.Objetivo: Desarrollar una revisión sistemática y metaanálisis para determinar la asociación entre la cintura hipertrigliceridémica (CHTG) e hipertensión arterial (HTA) en adultos.
Materiales: El presente estudio es una revisión sistemática (RS) con metanálisis de estudios observacionales de corte transversal analítico. Se utilizarán estrategias de búsqueda en diferentes bases de datos las cuales serán Pubmed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Embase. El análisis cualitativo fue presentado en una tabla con las características de cada estudio. Para el análisis cuantitativo, se realizó el metaanálisis de efectos aleatorios debido a la heterogeneidad de los estudios. Dichas variables fueron comparadas usando como medida de asociación Odds Ratios (OR) con su correspondiente intervalo de confianza al 95%.
Resultados: Se incluyeron 5 estudios para el análisis estadístico. De manera global, se encontró asociación estadísticamente significativa entre ambas variables (OR: 1,36; IC 95% 1,07 a 1,71). A su vez, se presentó una alta heterogeneidad (I cuadrado del 92%).
Conclusiones: La presente RS encontró que la CHTG está asociado con la presencia de HTA. No obstante, dado los pocos estudios encontrados, se recomienda la realización de más estudios primarios con un diseño prospectivo antes de la realización de una siguiente RS del tema, y con puntos de corte estandarizados para hacer una comparabilidad más homogénea
The influence of the 1992-1993 el niño on the reproductive biology of Scomber japonicus peruanus (Jordán & Hubb, 1925)
The influence of the 1992-1993 El Niño events on the reproductive behavior of the Scomber japonicus peruanus (Chub mackerel) was studied from samples collected monthly, along the Peruvian coast (3º23'S-14º00'S), from January 1990 to December 1993. The monthly variation of the gonadosomatic index and the frequency of the periods of gonad maturation evidenced that the spawning of the species occurred all year long, being more intense in summer. The values of the gonadosomatic index were higher during the occurrence of the 1992-1993 El Niño, while the body weight and gonad weight decreased. Regarding the condition factor, its values decreased in females over 35 cm in fork length.<br>A influência do evento El Niño 1992-1993 no comportamento reprodutivo de Scomber japonicus peruanus (cavalinha) foi estudada a partir de amostras coletadas mensalmente, ao longo do litoral peruano (3º23'S-14º00'S), de janeiro de 1990 a dezembro de 1993. A variação mensal do índice gonadossomático e a freqüência dos estágios de maturação gonadal evidenciaram que a desova da cavalinha ocorreu o ano inteiro, sendo mais intensa no verão. Os valores do índice gonadossomático foram mais elevados durante o evento El Niño, mas, em contraposição, as fêmeas apresentaram peso menor. Os dados mostraram que o fator de condição diminuiu em fêmeas com mais de 35 cm de comprimento furcal
Sugar metabolism reprogramming in a non-climacteric bud mutant of a climacteric plum fruit during development on the tree
We investigated sugar metabolism in leaves and fruits of two Japanese plum (Prunus salicina Lindl.) cultivars, the climacteric Santa Rosa and its bud sport mutant the non-climacteric Sweet Miriam, during development on the tree. We previously characterized differences between the two cultivars. Here, we identified key sugar metabolic pathways. Pearson coefficient correlations of metabolomics and transcriptomic data and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) of RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) data allowed the identification of 11 key sugar metabolism-associated genes: sucrose synthase, sucrose phosphate synthase, cytosolic invertase, vacuolar invertase, invertase inhibitor, α-galactosidase, β-galactosidase, galactokinase, trehalase, galactinol synthase, and raffinose synthase. These pathways were further assessed and validated through the biochemical characterization of the gene products and with metabolite analysis. Our results demonstrated the reprogramming of sugar metabolism in both leaves and fruits in the non-climacteric plum, which displayed a shift towards increased sorbitol synthesis. Climacteric and non-climacteric fruits showed differences in their UDP-galactose metabolism towards the production of galactose and raffinose, respectively. The higher content of galactinol, myo-inositol, raffinose, and trehalose in the non-climacteric fruits could improve the ability of the fruits to cope with the oxidative processes associated with fruit ripening. Overall, our results support a relationship between sugar metabolism, ethylene, and ripening behavior

Games can provide an effective and replicable space in which stakeholders learn skills necessary for deliberative and pluralist policymaking. These skills are especially important for “nexus” policy issues that are typically characterised by multiple, competing problem frames involving overlapping networks of stakeholders. In this position paper, we describe three serious games that serve as a space for players (stakeholders) and researchers to jointly explore alternative solutions to complex resource management issues: the Water-Food-Energy Nexus Game (Nexus Game); the Narubu Game of Many Voices (Narubu Game); and the Forest Governance Game (Forest Game). The games contain instructive and reflexive mechanisms that prompt players to self-discover common challenges associated with complex nexus issues, including conflicting institutional mandates, social dilemmas, contending worldviews, and plural interpretations of science
