Design and Development of an Architecture for Demonstrating the Interplay of Emerging SISO Standards
Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO) SIW Conference PaperThe Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO) focuses on facilitating simulation
interoperability across government and non-government applications worldwide. A number of standards are
emerging that will individually have great impact on the development and operation of simulation systems, as well
as interoperation across simulation systems and command and control systems. Taken together, however, the
emerging standards represent a set of capabilities and technologies which can revolutionize the simulation industry,
radically improving the way we develop and deliver interoperable systems
A comparison between matter wave and light wave interferometers for the detection of gravitational waves
We calculate and compare the response of light wave interferometers and
matter wave interferometers to gravitational waves. We find that metric matter
wave interferometers will not challenge kilometric light wave interferometers
such as Virgo or LIGO, but could be a good candidate for the detection of very
low frequency gravitational waves
Quantum-enhanced gyroscopy with rotating anisotropic BoseâEinstein condensates
High-precision gyroscopes are a key component of inertial navigation systems. By considering matter wave gyroscopes that make use of entanglement it should be possible to gain some advantages in terms of sensitivity, size, and resources used over unentangled optical systems. In this paper we consider the details of such a quantum-enhanced atom interferometry scheme based on atoms trapped in a carefully-chosen rotating trap. We consider all the steps: entanglement generation, phase imprinting, and read-out of the signal and show that quantum enhancement should be possible in principle. While the improvement in performance over equivalent unentangled schemes is small, our feasibility study opens the door to further developments and improvements
Propagation of Bose-Einstein condensates in a magnetic waveguide
Gaseous Bose-Einstein condensates of 2-3 million atoms were loaded into a
microfabricated magnetic trap using optical tweezers. Subsequently, the
condensates were released into a magnetic waveguide and propagated 12 mm.
Single-mode propagation was observed along homogeneous segments of the
waveguide. Inhomogeneities in the guiding potential arose from geometric
deformations of the microfabricated wires and caused strong transverse
excitations. Such deformations may restrict the waveguide physics that can be
explored with propagating condensates.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
The impact of maternal smoking during pregnancy on depressive and anxiety behaviors in children: the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study.
BACKGROUND: Maternal smoking during pregnancy (MSDP) is associated with multiple adverse childhood outcomes including externalizing behaviors. However, the association between MSDP and internalizing (anxiety and depressive) behaviors in offspring has received less investigation. We aimed to assess the association between MSDP and childhood internalizing (anxiety and depressive) behaviors in a very large, well-characterized cohort study. METHODS: We assessed the association between MSDP and internalizing behaviors in offspring utilizing information drawn from 90,040 mother-child pairs enrolled in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study. Mothers reported smoking information, including status and frequency of smoking, twice during pregnancy. Mothers also reported their child\u27s internalizing behaviors at 18 months, 36 months, and 5 years. Associations between MSDP and childhood internalizing behaviors, including dose-response and timing of smoking in pregnancy, were assessed at each time point. RESULTS: MSDP was associated with increased internalizing behaviors when offspring were aged 18 months (B = 0.11, P <0.001) and 36 months (B = 0.06, P <0.01), adjusting for numerous potential confounders. Higher rates of smoking (e.g., >20 cigarettes per day) were associated with higher levels of internalizing behaviors. Maternal smoking during early pregnancy appeared to be the critical period for exposure. CONCLUSIONS: We found evidence supporting a potential role for MSDP in increasing internalizing (anxiety and depressive) behaviors in offspring. We also found evidence supportive of a possible causal relationship, including dose-dependency and support for a predominant role of early pregnancy exposure. Further investigation utilizing genetically informed designs are warranted to assess this association
Sensitive gravity-gradiometry with atom interferometry: progress towards an improved determination of the gravitational constant
We here present a high sensitivity gravity-gradiometer based on atom
interferometry. In our apparatus, two clouds of laser-cooled rubidium atoms are
launched in fountain configuration and interrogated by a Raman interferometry
sequence to probe the gradient of gravity field. We recently implemented a
high-flux atomic source and a newly designed Raman lasers system in the
instrument set-up. We discuss the applications towards a precise determination
of the Newtonian gravitational constant G. The long-term stability of the
instrument and the signal-to-noise ratio demonstrated here open interesting
perspectives for pushing the measurement precision below the 100 ppm level
Study of chaos in hamiltonian systems via convergent normal forms
We use Moser's normal forms to study chaotic motion in two-degree hamiltonian
systems near a saddle point. Besides being convergent, they provide a suitable
description of the cylindrical topology of the chaotic flow in that vicinity.
Both aspects combined allowed a precise computation of the homoclinic
interaction of stable and unstable manifolds in the full phase space, rather
than just the Poincar\'e section. The formalism was applied to the
H\'enon-Heiles hamiltonian, producing strong evidence that the region of
convergence of these normal forms extends over that originally established by
Moser.Comment: 29 pages, REVTEX, 22 postscript figures on reques
Novel Ferromagnetic Atom Waveguide with in situ loading
Magneto-optic and magnetostatic trapping is realized near a surface using
current carrying coils wrapped around magnetizable cores. A cloud of 10^7
Cesium atoms is created with currents less than 50 mA. Ramping up the current
while maintaining optical dissipation leads to tightly confined atom clouds
with an aspect ratio of 1:1000. We study the 3D character of the magnetic
potential and characterize atom number and density as a function of the applied
current. The field gradient in the transverse dimension has been varied from <
10 G/cm to > 1 kG/cm. By loading and cooling atoms in-situ, we have eliminated
the problem of coupling from a MOT into a smaller phase space.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
First electron beam polarization measurements with a Compton polarimeter at Jefferson Laboratory
A Compton polarimeter has been installed in Hall A at Jefferson Laboratory.
This letter reports on the first electron beam polarization measurements
performed during the HAPPEX experiment at an electron energy of 3.3 GeV and an
average current of 40 A. The heart of this device is a Fabry-Perot cavity
which increased the luminosity for Compton scattering in the interaction region
so much that a 1.4% statistical accuracy could be obtained within one hour,
with a 3.3% total error
Bohr-Sommerfeld Quantization of Periodic Orbits
We show, that the canonical invariant part of corrections to the
Gutzwiller trace formula and the Gutzwiller-Voros spectral determinant can be
computed by the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rules, which usually apply for
integrable systems. We argue that the information content of the classical
action and stability can be used more effectively than in the usual treatment.
We demonstrate the improvement of precision on the example of the three disk
scattering system.Comment: revte
