    Virtual Social Currencies for Unemployed People

    Complementary currencies develop all around the world, taking various forms (material or immaterial) and fulfilling various functions. They are frequently introduced in order to promote local economy development and to fight against social exclusion. In this paper, we analyze the particular case of virtual currency circulation inside a local community of unemployed people. We elaborate on the assumptions that the organization of LETS and the circulation of complementary currencies have two properties: (i) they help unemployed workers to overcome the double coincidence of want necessity of an informal sector founded on barter exchange; (ii) they contribute to maintain and develop unemployed workers’ skills and employability of unemployed workers outside job. We study the global properties of a job market associating traditional short-term and long-term unemployment to the organization of LETS. Using a search theoretic model, we find that the initial level of trust of agents in the complementary currency(cies) but also the effective properties of this(ese) currency(cies) inside the LETS are crucial for LETS to become survive and becoming permanent. We also find that if the stationary equilibrium of the jobmarket includes LETS, then LETS have a positive influence on the rate of employment, on the expected utility of employed workers, and are Pareto improving when the benchmark case is a job market without any LETS

    La Sindrome di Forestier (DISH: Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis) è una patologia degenerativa sistemica a carico delle entesi, caratterizzata da alterata ossificazione dei punti di inserzione di legamenti, tendini e capsule articolari. È una patologia di riscontro a livello autoptico nel 18% della popolazione occidentale; aumenta di frequenza con l’età e coinvolge prevalentemente il sesso maschile (2:1). Interessa soprattutto il rachide toracico, seguito dal distretto cervicale nel 75% dei casi. La diagnosi è prettamente radiologica (Rx e TC); l’eziopatogenesi, incerta, è da ascriversi al microtraumatismo cronico associato alle più comuni alterazioni metaboliche dell’età adulta. Le manifestazioni cliniche, nelle forme di più alto grado possono alterare le funzioni aerodigestive, portando a disfonia, severa dispnea o disfagia, compromettendo la normale mobilità del sistema osteomuscolare del distretto cervicofacciale.     Soil chemistry aspects of predicting future phosphorus requirements in Sub-Saharan Africa

    Phosphorus (P) is a finite resource and critical to plant growth and therefore food security. Regional‐ and continental‐scale studies propose how much P would be required to feed the world by 2050. These indicate that sub‐Saharan Africa soils have the highest soil P deficit globally. However, the spatial heterogeneity of the P deficit caused by heterogeneous soil chemistry in the continental scale has never been addressed. We provide a combination of a broadly adopted P‐sorption model that is integrated into a highly influential, large‐scale soil phosphorus cycling model. As a result, we show significant differences between the model outputs in both the soil‐P concentrations and total P required to produce future crops for the same predicted scenarios. These results indicate the importance of soil chemistry for soil‐nutrient modelling and highlight that previous influential studies may have overestimated P required. This is particularly the case in Somalia where conventional modelling predicts twice as much P required to 2050 as our new proposed model. Plain language summary Improving food security in Sub‐Saharan Africa over the coming decades requires a dramatic increase in agricultural yields. Global yield increase has been driven by, amongst other factors, the widespread use of fertilisers including phosphorus. The use of fertilisers in Sub‐Saharan Africa is often prohibitively expensive and thus the most efficient use of phosphorus should be targeted. Soil chemistry largely controls phosphorus efficiency in agriculture, for example iron and aluminium which exist naturally in soil reduce the availability of phosphate to plants. Yet soil chemistry has not been included in several influential large‐scale modelling studies which estimate phosphorus requirements in Sub‐Saharan Africa to 2050. In this study we show that predictions of phosphorus requirement to feed the population of Sub‐Saharan Africa to 2050 can significantly change if soil chemistry is included (e.g. Somalia with up to 50% difference). Our findings are a new step towards making predictive decision‐making tool for phosphorus fertiliser management in Sub‐Saharan Africa considering the variability of soil chemistry

    Refinement of 1p36 Alterations Not Involving PRDM16 in Myeloid and Lymphoid Malignancies

    Fluorescence in situ hybridization was performed to characterize 81 cases of myeloid and lymphoid malignancies with cytogenetic 1p36 alterations not affecting the PRDM16 locus. In total, three subgroups were identified: balanced translocations (N = 27) and telomeric rearrangements (N = 15), both mainly observed in myeloid disorders; and unbalanced non-telomeric rearrangements (N = 39), mainly observed in lymphoid proliferations and frequently associated with a highly complex karyotype. The 1p36 rearrangement was isolated in 12 cases, mainly myeloid disorders. The breakpoints on 1p36 were more widely distributed than previously reported, but with identifiable rare breakpoint cluster regions, such as the TP73 locus. We also found novel partner loci on 1p36 for the known multi-partner genes HMGA2 and RUNX1. We precised the common terminal 1p36 deletion, which has been suggested to have an adverse prognosis, in B-cell lymphomas [follicular lymphomas and diffuse large B-cell lymphomas with t(14;18)(q32;q21) as well as follicular lymphomas without t(14;18)]. Intrachromosomal telomeric repetitive sequences were detected in at least half the cases of telomeric rearrangements. It is unclear how the latter rearrangements occurred and whether they represent oncogenic events or result from chromosomal instability during oncogenesis

    The paper presents the important personality of the great Italian economist Francesco Ferrara who has been the first Director of the new School of Commerce founded in Venice in 1868. The paper is divided in two parts: the first part presents the main features of Francesco Ferrara as an economist, showing how he was clearly a supporter of a free-market oriented vision of the economic analysis and of the economic policy, not liking at all a vision of the economic analysis separated from the political implications, but definitely favouring a political economy vision. He was a sharp opponent of socialism, although admiring the logical power of Marx's thought, but not Marxian ideas. But he was also an opponent of intermediate visions leading to mediations in the field of economic policy. His rather radical positions led him to resign from the role of minister of Finance. In the second part the paper shows how Ferrara accepted the proposal of Luigi Luzzatti to be appointed as director of new School of Commerce of Ca' Foscari in summer 1868; the paper shows how the relations between Ferrara and Luzzatti were characterized by polemical moments, both because of the lines followed by Ferrara in appointing the professors of the new school and because of the openness shown by Luzzatti, and not liked at all by Ferrara, towards policies showing a favorable attitude towards social interventions. Eventually the disagreements were solved. Finally, the paper shows how Ferrara succeeded in appointing at Ca' Foscari some of the most important Italian economists of his time, such as Maffeo Pantaleoni
