Data-Discriminants of Likelihood Equations
Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) is a fundamental computational problem in
statistics. The problem is to maximize the likelihood function with respect to
given data on a statistical model. An algebraic approach to this problem is to
solve a very structured parameterized polynomial system called likelihood
equations. For general choices of data, the number of complex solutions to the
likelihood equations is finite and called the ML-degree of the model. The only
solutions to the likelihood equations that are statistically meaningful are the
real/positive solutions. However, the number of real/positive solutions is not
characterized by the ML-degree. We use discriminants to classify data according
to the number of real/positive solutions of the likelihood equations. We call
these discriminants data-discriminants (DD). We develop a probabilistic
algorithm for computing DDs. Experimental results show that, for the benchmarks
we have tried, the probabilistic algorithm is more efficient than the standard
elimination algorithm. Based on the computational results, we discuss the real
root classification problem for the 3 by 3 symmetric matrix~model.Comment: 2 table
Karak syndrome: a novel degenerative disorder of the basal ganglia and cerebellum
Two brothers are reported with early onset progressive
cerebellar ataxia, dystonia, spasticity, and intellectual
decline.
• Neuroradiology showed cerebellar atrophy and features
compatible with iron deposition in the putamen
(including the “eye of the tiger sign”) and substantia
nigra.
• Diagnosis was compatible with pantothenate kinase
associated neuropathy resulting from pantothenate
kinase 2 mutation (PKAN due to PANK2) but linkage to
PNAK2 was eliminated suggesting Karak syndrome to
be a novel disorder.
• The “eye of the tiger” sign has previously only been
reported to occur in PKAN due to PKAN
Challenges That Hinder Parturients to Deliver in Health Facilities: a Qualitative Analysis in Two Districts of Indonesia
Background: There are many challenges women face to be able to give birth in health facilities in many parts of Indonesia. This study explores the roles and observations of close-to-community maternal health providers and other community members on potential barriers faced by women to deliver in health facilities in two districts within The Archipelago. Methods: Employing an explorative qualitative approach, 110 semi-structured interviews and 7 focus group discussions were conducted in 8 villages in Southwest Sumba, in the East Nusa Tenggara province, and in 8 villages in Cianjur, in the West Java province. The participants included village midwives, Posyandu volunteer (village health volunteers), traditional birth attendants (TBAs), mothers, men, village heads and district health officials. Results: The main findings were mostly similar in the two study areas. However, there were some key differences. Preference for TBA care, traditional beliefs, a lack of responsiveness of health providers to local traditions, distance, cost of travel and indirect costs of accompanying family members were all barriers to patients attending health facilities for the birth of their child. TBAs were the preferred health providers in most cases due to their close proximity at the time of childbirth and their adherence to traditional practices during pregnancy and delivery. Conclusions: Improving collaborations between midwives and TBAs, collaboration, and responsiveness to traditional practices within health facilities and effective health promotion campaigns about the benefits of giving birth in health facilities may increase the use of health facilities in both study areas.
A criminal justice system includes several institutions for enforcing law besides judges, they are Police as investigators and prosecutors as public prosecution, in its practice the application of Perma Number 2, 2012 might have troble on legal issue and cause legal uncertainty either investigators and prosecutors. The power of regulating the Supreme Court on the limits of petty crimes and the amount of fines in the Indonesian Criminal Code in the criminal law system that is the Supreme Court Regulation Number 2, 2012 ordered by higher regulations or established by authority, and the Implementation of Perma Number 2, 2012 on the Adjustment Limit of Petty Crimes and the amount of fines in the Criminal Code in the criminal justice system, basically it has been going but it is still not effective as there are pros and cons
Variation in plasma oxidative status and testosterone level in relation to egg-eviction effort and age of brood-parasitic common cuckoo nestlings
To avoid competition for parental care, brood-parasitic Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) nestlings evict all of the host's eggs and nestlings within a few days after hatching. Little is known about the physiological effects of eviction behavior on the cuckoo nestling's oxidative balance or about age-related variation in plasma oxidative status and testosterone level of developing birds. We examined whether the cuckoo nestling's plasma oxidative status was related to prior effort in eviction and quantified variation in the level of reactive oxygen metabolites, of nonenzymatic antioxidant capacity, and of testosterone concentration in plasma at various phases of the cuckoo's development. Levels of both reactive oxygen metabolites and antioxidant capacity were greater in older than in younger nestlings, suggesting that younger nestlings effectively counterbalance their increased production of free radicals, whereas, near fledging, levels of reactive oxygen metabolites increase despite improved antioxidant capacity. Possibly, overall energy expenditure increases with age and elevates the production of reactive oxygen species to a rate higher than what the antioxidant system could eliminate. Plasma testosterone level was the highest at nestlings' intermediate phase of growth. High levels of testosterone may be required during the period of fastest growth, and when the growth rate levels off near fledging, testosterone levels may also decline. Cuckoo chicks that evicted more host eggs from steeper nests had higher plasma levels of reactive oxygen metabolites shortly after the eviction period, suggesting that eviction is costly in terms of an increased level of oxidative stress.

Energy and nutrient intakes: findings from the Malaysian Adult Nutrition Survey (MANS)
Nutrition surveys based on a representative sample of the Malaysian adult population have hitherto not been reported. In 2003, the Ministry of Health, Malaysia, conducted the Malaysian Adult Nutrition Survey (MANS), the first and largest nutrition survey in the country which aimed to provide detailed quantitative information on nutritional status, food and nutrient intakes, and physical activity pattern on a nationwide representative sample of adult subjects between the ages of 18 and 59 years. The survey covered four zones in Peninsular Malaysia (Central, Southern, Northern and East Coast), Sabah and Sarawak. This paper presents the mean and selected percentiles of energy and nutrient intake of 6886 subjects by selected demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. Energy contributions by macronutrients and dietary adequacy in relation to the Recommended Nutrient Intake for Malaysians are also described. Information on dietary intake was collected by trained nutritionists using a one day 24-hour diet recall. Dietary data were analysed using Nutritionist Pro, a diet analysis software and statistical analysis was carried out using the SPSS ver. 13.0. In most of the demographic and socioeconomic groups, males had higher mean energy (1776 kcal) and nutrient intake and percent achievement of RNI than females (1447 kcal). The proportions of calories derived from macronutrients were within the recommendations for a healthy diet. Intake of micronutrients such as iron, calcium and vitamin A was about 50% of RNI particularly in women. Sodium intake of Malaysians, not reported in earlier studies, is also made available. Under-reporting using the EI/BMR ratio was found in half of the population studied. The present study provides the first national estimates of energy and nutrient intake of the Malaysian adult population. Regular nutrition surveys are needed at the national level to provide valuable information on trends in food and nutrient intake, particularly among age and ethnically diverse subgroups of the population

Fashion showcases design: perceptions of the showcase in the brazilian popular market
The present work aims to present the showcase, its relation with the building, with fashion and with the observer. The importance of this exhibition space extends from the aesthetic and communication functions to be part of a wide textile and clothing chain. This role integrates the whole cycle of creation, textiles, clothing and fashion accessories. For this article we used bibliographical references of design and fashion, as well as methodologies of photographic and ethnographic documentation, with application of focus groups. From the focus groups were identified descriptors related to emotional design. Such descriptors point to the emotions arising from memories, tastes and attitudes. These factors can lead to decisions and assist the wider knowledge of the target audience.- This work is supported by CNPq funding on the Programa Ciencias Sem Fronteiras - CSF by national funds within the scope of the project Processo no 203068/2014-9.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Bayesian Inference in Processing Experimental Data: Principles and Basic Applications
This report introduces general ideas and some basic methods of the Bayesian
probability theory applied to physics measurements. Our aim is to make the
reader familiar, through examples rather than rigorous formalism, with concepts
such as: model comparison (including the automatic Ockham's Razor filter
provided by the Bayesian approach); parametric inference; quantification of the
uncertainty about the value of physical quantities, also taking into account
systematic effects; role of marginalization; posterior characterization;
predictive distributions; hierarchical modelling and hyperparameters; Gaussian
approximation of the posterior and recovery of conventional methods, especially
maximum likelihood and chi-square fits under well defined conditions; conjugate
priors, transformation invariance and maximum entropy motivated priors; Monte
Carlo estimates of expectation, including a short introduction to Markov Chain
Monte Carlo methods.Comment: 40 pages, 2 figures, invited paper for Reports on Progress in Physic
