We prove to be a brief guide to facilitate the telematic consultation of the funds of the Archivo General de Indias across the portal PARES (Portal of Spanish Archives). Promoted by the Department of Culture in Spain, PARES it is a platform that integrates the databases of several Spanish Historical Archives, and that allows the consultation of the funds across Internet.En este trabajo mostramos una breve guía para facilitar la consulta telemática de los fondos del Archivo General de Indias a través del portal PARES (Portal de Archivos Españoles). Spain’s authorities have become more agile since the generalisation of the Internet, the use of which has significantly improved the ways in which they communicate with the country’s citizens and companies. The subjects of this study were the websites produced by the Town Councils of Spain’s provincial capitals as well as those of the autonomous cities Ceuta and Melilla. Their content and the personnel in charge of their creation, development, maintenance and updating were all examined. A questionnaire was designed to study the content of and the services offered by these charged with the technical and content management of these sites were identified by a multiple choice-type questionnaire sent by e-mail and fax to those responsible for these new services. Thirty three of the 52 councils contacted responded. The results show that at the municipal level Spain is still in the phase of making information available, with some local governments moving faster than others towards an ‘electronic administration’.

Disseminating research with web CV hyperlinks

This is an accepted manuscript of an article published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd in Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology on 03/07/2014, available online: https://doi.org/10.1002/asi.23070 The accepted version of the publication may differ from the final published version. Some curricula vitae (web CVs) of academics on the web, including homepages and publication lists, link to open‐access (OA) articles, resources, abstracts in publishers' websites, or academic discussions, helping to disseminate research. To assess how common such practices are and whether they vary by discipline, gender, and country, the authors conducted a large‐scale e‐mail survey of astronomy and astrophysics, public health, environmental engineering, and philosophy across 15 European countries and analyzed hyperlinks from web CVs of academics. About 60% of the 2,154 survey responses reported having a web CV or something similar, and there were differences between disciplines, genders, and countries. A follow‐up outlink analysis of 2,700 web CVs found that a third had at least one outlink to an OA target, typically a public eprint archive or an individual self‐archived file. This proportion was considerably higher in astronomy (48%) and philosophy (37%) than in environmental engineering (29%) and public health (21%). There were also differences in linking to publishers' websites, resources, and discussions. Perhaps most important, however, the amount of linking to OA publications seems to be much lower than allowed by publishers and journals, suggesting that many opportunities for disseminating full‐text research online are being missed, especially in disciplines without established repositories. Moreover, few academics seem to be exploiting their CVs to link to discussions, resources, or article abstracts, which seems to be another missed opportunity for publicizing research

Author-level metrics in the new academic profile platforms: The online behaviour of the Bibliometrics community

[EN] The new web-based academic communication platforms do not only enable researchers to better advertise their academic outputs, making them more visible than ever before, but they also provide a wide supply of metrics to help authors better understand the impact their work is making. This study has three objectives: a) to analyse the uptake of some of the most popular platforms (Google Scholar Citations, ResearcherID, ResearchGate, Mendeley and Twitter) by a specific scientific community (bibliometrics, scientometrics, informetrics, webometrics, and altmetrics); b) to compare the metrics available from each platform; and c) to determine the meaning of all these new metrics. To do this, the data available in these platforms about a sample of 811 authors (researchers in bibliometrics for whom a public profile Google Scholar Citations was found) were extracted. A total of 31 metrics were analysed. The results show that a high number of the analysed researchers only had a profile in Google Scholar Citations (159), or only in Google Scholar Citations and Research Gate (142). Lastly, we find two kinds of metrics of online impact. First, metrics related to connectivity (followers), and second, all metrics associated to academic impact. This second group can further be divided into usage metrics (reads, views), and citation metrics. The results suggest that Google Scholar Citations is the source that provides more comprehensive citation-related data, whereas Twitter stands out in connectivity-related metrics. In this work are expressed some sources about naval history guarded in the Hispano-American national archives, having in it count tools of description and consultation (guides, inventories, catalogues, etc.) that have been included in the websites of theses archives. The more completed tools of consultation are provided by the websites the national archives of Chile and Mexico. The archives that guard the major collections of interest for the naval history are those of Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico and Uruguay. In this paper appear the online fonds that provide the Spanish-American national archives in their websites during the year 2009. The results indicate that almost all the institutions include online funds, though the subject, extension, quality and form of presentation is different.
