Generating Compact Geometric Track-Maps for Train Positioning Applications
In this paper, we present a method to generate compact geometric track-maps
for train-borne localization applications. Therefore, we first give a brief
overview on the purpose of track maps in train-positioning applications. It
becomes apparent that there are hardly any adequate methods to generate
suitable geometric track-maps. This is why we present a novel map generation
procedure. It uses an optimization formulation to find the continuous sequence
of track geometries that fits the available measurement data best. The
optimization is initialized with the results from a localization filter
developed in our previous work. The localization filter also provides the
required information for shape identification and measurement association. The
presented approach will be evaluated on simulated data as well as on real
measurements

Conventional agricultural and forestry use of wetlands require increasing drainage intensity. Due to drainage, cultivation and fertilization, wetlands emit large amounts of nutrients into adjacent ecosystems, and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Associated with these processes are the degradation of the organic soil and the loss of biodiversity.
We have developed a Decision Support System (DSS) that provides basic information to farmers and planners to enable them to use peatlands in a more sustainable way by conserving peat. The DSS proposes adapted conventional and alternative land use options both for peatlands currently used for agricultural purposes and uncultivated, degraded ones.
The DSS is based on a modular concept. Dichotomous decision trees are used as main model elements. The System gives a basic instruction to every branching point, explaining the decision relevant criteria and classification scheme, and providing further information such as references, weblinks or visual materials.
The DSS is suitable for producing tailor-made proposals for the sustainable use of peatlands in accordance to the location. It's published as a web-based application
The Randomized Shortened Dental Arch Study: Tooth Loss
The evidence concerning the management of shortened dental arch (SDA) cases is sparse. This multi-center study was aimed at generating data on outcomes and survival rates for two common treatments, removable dental prostheses (RDP) for molar replacement or no replacement (SDA). The hypothesis was that the treatments lead to different incidences of tooth loss. We included 215 patients with complete molar loss in one jaw. Molars were either replaced by RDP or not replaced, according to the SDA concept. First tooth loss after treatment was the primary outcome measure. This event occurred in 13 patients in the RDP group and nine patients in the SDA group. The respective Kaplan-Meier survival rates at 38 months were 0.83 (95% CI: 0.74-0.91) in the RDP group and 0.86 (95% CI: 0.78-0.95) in the SDA group, the difference being non-significant

Radial-velocity variations of the H-alpha emission measured on the steep
wings of the H-alpha line, prewhitened for the long-time changes, vary
periodically with a period of (218.025 +/- 0.022)d, confirming the suspected
binary nature of the bright Be star Pleione, a member of the Pleiades cluster.
The orbit seems to have a high eccentricity over 0.7, but we also briefly
discuss the possibility that the true orbit is circular and that the
eccentricity is spurious owing to the phase-dependent effects of the
circumstellar matter. The projected angular separation of the spectroscopic
orbit is large enough to allow the detection of the binary with large optical
interferometers, provided the magnitude difference primary - secondary is not
too large. Since our data cover the onset of a new shell phase up to
development of a metallic shell spectrum, we also briefly discuss the recent
long-term changes. We confirm the formation of a new envelope, coexisting with
the previous one, at the onset of the new shell phase. We find that the full
width at half maximum of the H-alpha profile has been decreasing with time for
both envelopes. In this connection, we briefly discuss Hirata's hypothesis of
precessing gaseous disk and possible alternative scenarios of the observed
long-term changes
The historical light curve of the symbiotic star AG Draconis: intense, magnetically induced cyclic activity
We analyze an optical light curve of the symbiotic system AG Draconis
covering the last 120 years of its history. During the first 32 years the
system was in a quiescence state. Around the year 1922 the star's quiescence
luminosity brightened by 0.29 mag. The last 82 years of the light curve (LC)
are characterized by a series of outbursts of 1-2 magnitude in brightness and
about 100 days in duration. The outbursts are distributed along the time axis
in 6 clusters with a quasi-periodic cycle of some 5300 days. The time intervals
among the outbursts themselves are integral numbers of the period 373.5 days.
During quiescence states the LC oscillates with the binary period of the system
of 550 d. The LC contains also a weak periodic signal with a period of 350 d,
attributed to pulsations of the giant star. Another period of 1160 d is also
present in the light curve, being the sidereal rotation period of the giant
star. We suggest that the outbursts are events of intense mass transfer from
the giant onto the hot component. These are modulated by an interplay between a
solar-like magnetic dynamo cycle operating in the outer layers of the giant,
and a tidal deformation of these layers that circulates the surface of the
giant with the synodic diurnal period of 373.5 Earth days. AG Dra is the 5th
symbiotic system with a light curve that reflects such an intense magnetic and

Biomarkers in respiratory diseases
The scientific evidence concerning prosthodontic care for the shortened dental arch (SDA) is sparse. This randomized multicenter study aimed to compare two common treatment options: removable partial dental prostheses (RPDPs) for molar replacement vs. no replacement (SDA). One of the hypotheses was that the follow-up treatment differs between patients with RPDPs and patients with SDAs during the 5-year follow-up period. Two hundred and fifteen patients with complete molar loss in one jaw were included in the study. Molars were either replaced by RPDPs or not replaced according to the SDA concept. A mean number of 4.2 (RPDP) and 2.8 (SDA) treatments for biological or technical reasons occurred during the 5-year observation time per patient. Concerning the biological aspect, no significant differences between the groups could be shown, whereas treatment arising from technical reasons was significantly more frequent for the RPDP group. When the severity of treatment was analyzed, a change over time was evident. When, at baseline, only follow-up treatment with minimal effort is required, over time there is a continuous increase to moderate and extensive effort observed for both groups ( Controlled-trials.com number ISRCTN97265367). </jats:p
Climate fluctuations and the spring invasion of the North Sea by Calanus finmarchicus
The population of Calanus finmarchicus in the North Sea is replenished each spring by invasion from an overwintering stock located beyond the shelf edge. A combincation of field observations, statistical analysis of Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) data, and particle tracking model simulations, was used to investigate the processes involved in the cross-shelf invasion. The results showed that the main source of overwintering animals entering the North Sea in the spring is at depths of greater than 600m in the Faroe Shetland Channel, where concentrations of up to 620m -3 are found in association with the overflow of Norwegian Sea Deep Water (NSDW) across the Iceland Scotland Ridge. The input of this water mass to the Faroe Shetland Channel, and hence the supply of overwintering C. finmarchicus, has declined since the late 1960s due to changes in convective processes in the Greenland Sea. Beginning in February, animals start to emerge from the overwintering state and migrate to the surface waters, where their transport into the North Sea is mainly determined by the incidence of north-westerly winds that have declined since the 1960s. Together, these two factors explain a high proportion of the 30-year trends in spring abundance in the North Sea as measured by the CPR survey. Both the regional winds and the NSDW overflow are connected to the North Atlantic Oscillation Index (NAO), which is an atmospheric climate index, but with different time scales of response. Thus, interannual fluctuations in the NAO can cause immediate changes in the incidence of north-westerly winds without leading to corresponding changes in C. finmarchicus abundance in the North Sea, because the NSDW overflow responds over longer (decadal) time scales
UV and X-Ray Monitoring of AG Draconis During the 1994/1995 Outbursts
The recent 1994-1995 active phase of AG Draconis has given us for the first
time the opportunity to follow the full X-ray behaviour of a symbiotic star
during two successive outbursts and to compare with its quiescence X-ray
emission. With \ros observations we have discovered a remarkable decrease of
the X-ray flux during both optical maxima, followed by a gradual recovering to
the pre-outburst flux. In the UV the events were characterized by a large
increase of the emission line and continuum fluxes, comparable to the behaviour
of AG Dra during the 1980-81 active phase. The anticorrelation of X-ray/UV flux
and optical brightness evolution is shown to very likely be due to a
temperature decrease of the hot component. Such a temperature decrease could be
produced by an increased mass transfer to the burning compact object, causing

Shear bond strength between veneering ceramics and ceria-stabilized zirconia/alumina
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Ceria-stabilized tetragonal ZrO(2)/Al(2)O(3) nanocomposite (Ce-TZP/A) offers superior properties compared to yttria-stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP). However, the bond quality to veneering ceramics has not been investigated. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond strength of different veneering ceramics to Ce-TZP/A. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Cubes of Ce-TZP/A (NANOZR) (edge length, 10 mm) were layered with veneering ceramics (5 mm in thickness) with or without application of a liner and sheared at the interface. The effect of different surface treatments (polished with 3-mum diamond paste or airborne-particle abraded) was evaluated with 1 veneering ceramic (Cerabien ZR). Shear bond strength of 5 additional veneering ceramics (IPS e.max, Initial ZR, Triceram, Vintage ZR, or VITA VM 9) to polished Ce-TZP/A was measured (n=10). Polished Y-TZP (Hint-ELs ZrO(2) HIP) veneered with 2 ceramics (Cerabien ZR, Vintage ZR) served as the control. Mean shear bond strength values (MPa) were calculated. The means were statistically analyzed with 2-way ANOVA for the effect of surface treatment and liner, 2-way ANOVA for the effect of different veneering ceramic brands and liner, and 3-way ANOVA for the effect of substrate, veneering ceramic brands, and liner, as well as 1-way ANOVA for the differences between the veneering ceramics. A post hoc Scheffé test was used (alpha=.05). RESULTS: The effects of surface treatment (P=.007) or application of liner (P<.001) were significant. Shear bond strength with different veneering ceramics showed bond strength values with means ranging between 14.2 +/-1.7 MPa (IPS e.max with liner) and 27.5 +/-4.2 MPa (VITA VM 9). A significant difference was found between the results of shear bond tests with Y-TZP and Ce-TZP/A (P=.022). The application of a liner on Y-TZP had no significant effect. CONCLUSIONS: Airborne-particle abrasion is not necessary to enhance the shear bond strength of the evaluated veneering ceramics to Ce-TZP/A. Liners impair the shear bond strength of veneering ceramics to Ce-TZP/A
Comparison of digital and conventional impression techniques: evaluation of patients’ perception, treatment comfort, effectiveness and clinical outcomes
Background: The purpose of this study was to compare two impression techniques from the perspective of patient preferences and treatment comfort.Methods: Twenty-four (12 male, 12 female) subjects who had no previous experience with either conventional or digital impression participated in this study. Conventional impressions of maxillary and mandibular dental arches were taken with a polyether impression material (Impregum, 3 M ESPE), and bite registrations were made with polysiloxane bite registration material (Futar D, Kettenbach). Two weeks later, digital impressions and bite scans were performed using an intra-oral scanner (CEREC Omnicam, Sirona). Immediately after the impressions were made, the subjects' attitudes, preferences and perceptions towards impression techniques were evaluated using a standardized questionnaire. The perceived source of stress was evaluated using the State-Trait Anxiety Scale. Processing steps of the impression techniques (tray selection, working time etc.) were recorded in seconds. Statistical analyses were performed with the Wilcoxon Rank test, and p < 0.05 was considered significant.Results: There were significant differences among the groups (p < 0.05) in terms of total working time and processing steps. Patients stated that digital impressions were more comfortable than conventional techniques.Conclusions: Digital impressions resulted in a more time-efficient technique than conventional impressions. Patients preferred the digital impression technique rather than conventional techniques
