Delivering Information about Retirement Saving among Hispanic Women: Two Facebook Experiments

    Get PDF
We conducted two Facebook experiments (the first one during July 21–25, 2016, and the second during April 22–25, 2018) to determine what type of message related to injunctive norms is more effective in getting Hispanic women interested in learning about financial planning for retirement. We also explore how social media tools could be used in future interventions to promote retirement saving among Hispanic women. In both experiments, we found that a message centered on peer influence may be more successful than a message centered on familism in getting Hispanic women interested in learning more about financial planning for retirement. When we disaggregate our data by age and state, we find that click-through rates were higher among Hispanic women between 45 and 55 years old, and the largest number of impressions were among Hispanic women in California and Texas. When we disaggregate our data by device, we find that most study participants were reached through an Android smartphone

Perspectives on Finances and Mental Health Status among Low-Income Los Angeles Latinas

Abstract Research has established a link between financial challenges and mental health outcomes. Understanding this linkage among low-income Latinas who face unique experiences and challenges in relation to managing their household finances is important. This study utilized a community-based participatory qualitative research method to explore perspectives on financial and mental health among Latinas residing in Los Angeles County. The implications of this study are applicable when conducting a culturally responsive financial therapy program. Three focus groups were conducted with mainly immigrant, Spanish-speaking, low-income Latinas (n = 37). The study found that though participants face financial stressors tied to managing finances, they were eager to learn new skills and tools for improved financial practices and mental health therapies. For financial education interventions targeted to Latinas, it is best to use interventions that incorporate peer-support groups, improve knowledge about financial management tools and financial products available in the community, and therapeutic interventions to address financial stress. Key words: immigrants, household financial decision-making, savings, formal financial services, financial stres

Promoting algebraic thinking in elementary school pupils requires implementing specific training activities for teachers, which in turn involves developing tools to assess their didactic-mathematical knowledge about this subject. In this paper we present results of a study aimed to build a questionnaire for assessing the didactic-mathematic knowledge of prospective primary teachers on elementary algebraic reasoning. We describe the categories of algebraic knowledge (structures, functions and modeling), as well as the categories of didactical knowledge (epistemic, cognitive, instructional and ecological facets) taken into account. We also describe and analyze the tasks included in the questionnaire reporting its content validity

European common spadefoot toad, Pelobates fuscus, is the only representative species of Pelobatidae family in Croatia. Despite the species is widespread all over the Europe, there are many data concerning the global population is in decline. According to the Red List of Amphibians and Reptiles of Croatia, common spadefoot toad is categorized as DD (data deficient). It inhabits lowland areas and flatlands near slow moving or stagnant waterbodies with little or no predator and loose soil (natural or anthropogenic habitats). Researched area includes stagnant waterbody in the village Lijeva Luka, Sisak – Moslavina Country. There were two egg clutches found and kept under controlled conditions with the aims of: 1) detailed morphological description of tadpoles and their oral disc through developmental stages, 2) the existence of morphological adaptations of P. fuscus and R. temporaria in the competition experiment, 3) the existence of morphological adaptations of P. fuscus in the presence of predator fish Umbra krameri. Tadpoles were treated equally and sampled in 3 % formaldehyde. Tadpoles were scanned and measured using the ImageJ programme and digital caliper. Developmental stages from 23 to 41 were determined with the highest value of total body length of 99,04 mm. All morphological features of oral disc with accompanying formulas were illustrated and described in detail. Spadefoot toad tadpoles did not show significant morphological changes within the competition experiment

This is the author's accepted manuscript. The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10933-009-9387-7.We present the Holocene sequence from Lago Enol (43°16′N, 4°59′W, 1,070 m a.s.l.), Cantabrian Mountains, northern Spain. A multiproxy analysis provided comprehensive information about regional humidity and temperature changes. The analysis included sedimentological descriptions, physical properties, organic carbon and carbonate content, mineralogy and geochemical composition together with biological proxies including diatom and ostracod assemblages. A detailed pollen study enabled reconstruction of variations in vegetation cover, which were interpreted in the context of climate changes and human impact. Four distinct stages were recognized for the last 13,500 years: (1) a cold and dry episode that includes the Younger Dryas event (13,500–11,600 cal. year BP); (2) a humid and warmer period characterizing the onset of the Holocene (11,600–8,700 cal. year BP); (3) a tendency toward a drier climate during the middle Holocene (8,700–4,650 cal. year BP); and (4) a return to humid conditions following landscape modification by human activity (pastoral activities, deforestation) in the late Holocene (4,650–2,200 cal. year BP). Superimposed on relatively stable landscape conditions (e.g. maintenance of well established forests), the typical environmental variability of the southern European region is observed at this site. The Spanish Inter-Ministry Commission of Science and Technology (CICYT), the Spanish National Parks agency, the European Commission, the Spanish Ministry of Science, and the European Social Fund
