    Comparison of Kansei Engineering and AttrakDiff to Evaluate Kitchen Products

    Kansei Engineering can be used to create scales to measure perceptions and evaluations of products in a particular context. To what extent do specifically constructed Kansei scales reveal more information about a product than a more generic, prestructured instrument, such as AttrakDiff? This case study identified relevant affective and pragmatic Kansei attributes that influence the purchase of a range hood (cooker hood). 102 customers rated the extent to which each of 10 range hoods possessed these attributes. In addition, AttrakDiff was used to measure hedonic and pragmatic quality perceptions. There was a general high correspondence between AttrakDiff and Kansei. While Kansei provided richer and more specific feedback, it was more resource intensive to carry out

    The relationship between core symptoms of ADHD and the Cognitive Reflection Test in a non-clinical sample.

    INTRODUCTION: Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms are frequently linked to executive function deficits. There is reason to believe that these deficits may give rise to problems with complex reasoning and problem solving. METHODS: Eighty-six men (N = 45) and women (N = 41) completed a self-report measure to assess ADHD symptoms, along with a complex reasoning task; the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT). IQ was also tested due to its covariance with reasoning ability. RESULTS: Analysis suggested that all three symptoms of ADHD (inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity) are negatively related to performance on the CRT, however, only inattention significantly contributed to a model that predicted CRT performance. CONCLUSIONS: Of the three core symptoms of ADHD, inattention is the most important for reasoning ability. Results are discussed with reference to an executive function model of ADHD, with particular emphasis on the role of working memory in inattention

    Generator Coordinate Method Calculations for Ground and First Excited Collective States in 4^{4}He, 16^{16}O and 40^{40}Ca Nuclei

    The main characteristics of the ground and, in particular, the first excited monopole state in the 4^{4}He, 16^{16}O and 40^{40}Ca nuclei are studied within the generator coordinate method using Skyrme-type effective forces and three construction potentials, namely the harmonic-oscillator, the square-well and Woods-Saxon potentials. Calculations of density distributions, radii, nucleon momentum distributions, natural orbitals, occupation numbers and depletions of the Fermi sea, as well as of pair density and momentum distributions are carried out. A comparison of these quantities for both ground and first excited monopole states with the available empirical data and with the results of other theoretical methods are given and discussed in detail.Comment: 15 pages, LaTeX, 6 Postscript figures, submitted to EPJ

    This paper presents a novel approach for multi-lingual sentiment classification in short texts. This is a challenging task as the amount of training data in languages other than English is very limited. Previously proposed multi-lingual approaches typically require to establish a correspondence to English for which powerful classifiers are already available. In contrast, our method does not require such supervision. We leverage large amounts of weakly-supervised data in various languages to train a multi-layer convolutional network and demonstrate the importance of using pre-training of such networks. We thoroughly evaluate our approach on various multi-lingual datasets, including the recent SemEval-2016 sentiment prediction benchmark (Task 4), where we achieved state-of-the-art performance. We also compare the performance of our model trained individually for each language to a variant trained for all languages at once. We show that the latter model reaches slightly worse – but still acceptable – performance when compared to the single language model, while benefiting from better generalization properties across languages

    A Novel Laboratory Course on Advanced Chemical Engineering Experiments

    The chemical engineering curriculum in the United States has trained generations of technical experts who have successfully optimized chemical processes and products once they entered the chemical industry. The U.S. chemical industry, however, has entered a critical stage in which it must be able to create new and differentiated value through technical innovations that arc essential for long-term survival. This innovation process will require new skills that go far beyond the traditional expertise for the optimization of tasks possessed by young chemical engineers. The innovators must be able to identify new opportunities, explore the boundaries of technology, evaluate critical issues, develop and implement technologies, and communicate effectively with scientists and engineers from other disciplines. Therefore, one of the most important educational tasks of a modern university, in combination with a strong theoretical foundation, is to challenge students in laboratory courses to think, explore, hypothesize, plan, solve, and evaluate. The typical sequence of laboratory skills development stops short of introducing young engineers to the most critical aspects of experimental work. Chemical engineers usually begin developing their laboratory skills in chemistry courses, where experiments are closely managed. At this early stage in their development, students follow detailed instructions and learn basic principles by observing the results. In the undergraduate engineering laboratory course (the unit operations lab ), students have more freedom in experimental design but still have well-defined objectives and manipulate equipment someone else has set up. It is rare, however, for undergraduate students to be taught how to create new experiments. It is also rare for undergraduate students, and hence beginning graduate students, to have an appreciation for the care, planning, design, and testing required to produce equipment that will give reliable and useful results. Even such simple issues as leak testing or adapting analytical devices to new tasks are outside most students* experience. Even more important is an absence of opportunities to learn how the lessons learned from the failure of an approach can be fed back into the empirical process to seed the finally successful idea. All these skills require more creative freedom than is usually allowed in a well-structured laboratory course. In the novel laboratory teaching approach described here, we try to provide students with a learning environment that allows them to develop advanced experimental skills that are necessary for success in research and development environments

    Gestational breast cancer in New South Wales: A population-based linkage study of incidence, management, and outcomes.

    BackgroundThe incidence of gestational breast cancer (GBC) is increasing in high-income countries. Our study aimed to examine the epidemiology, management and outcomes of women with GBC in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.MethodsA retrospective cohort study using linked data from three NSW datasets. The study group comprised women giving birth with a first-time diagnosis of GBC while the comparison group comprised women giving birth without any type of cancer. Outcome measures included incidence of GBC, maternal morbidities, obstetric management, neonatal mortality, and preterm birth.ResultsBetween 1994 and 2013, 122 women with GBC gave birth in NSW (crude incidence 6.8/ 100,000, 95%CI: 5.6-8.0). Women aged ≥35 years had higher odds of GBC (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 6.09, 95%CI 4.02-9.2) than younger women. Women with GBC were more likely to give birth by labour induction or pre-labour CS compared to women with no cancer (AOR 4.8, 95%CI: 2.96-7.79). Among women who gave birth by labour induction or pre-labour CS, the preterm birth rate was higher for women with GBC than for women with no cancer (52% vs 7%; AOR 17.5, 95%CI: 11.3-27.3). However, among women with GBC, preterm birth rate did not differ significantly by timing of diagnosis or cancer stage. Babies born to women with GBC were more likely to be preterm (AOR 12.93, 95%CI 8.97-18.64), low birthweight (AOR 8.88, 95%CI 5.87-13.43) or admitted to higher care (AOR 3.99, 95%CI 2.76-5.76) than babies born to women with no cancer.ConclusionWomen aged ≥35 years are at increased risk of GBC. There is a high rate of preterm birth among women with GBC, which is not associated with timing of diagnosis or cancer stage. Most births followed induction of labour or pre-labour CS, with no major short term neonatal morbidity

    Scaling in long term data sets of geomagnetic indices and solar wind ϵ as seen by WIND spacecraft

    We study scaling in fluctuations of the geomagnetic indices (AE, AU, and AL) that provide a measure of magnetospheric activity and of the ε parameter which is a measure of the solar wind driver. Generalized structure function (GSF) analysis shows that fluctuations exhibit self-similar scaling up to about 1 hour for the AU index and about 2 hours for AL, AE and ε when the most extreme fluctuations over 10 standard deviations are excluded. The scaling exponents of the GSF are found to be similar for the three AE indices, and to differ significantly from that of ε. This is corroborated by direct comparison of their rescaled probability density functions
