    Get PDF
In the present study we describe the cases of two patients with cluster-like headache related to intracranial carotid artery aneurysm. One of these patients responded to verapamil prescription with headache resolution. In both cases the surgical clipping of the aneurysm resolved the cluster pain. These findings strongly suggest a pathophysiological link between the two conditions. The authors discuss the potential pathophysiological mechanisms underlying cluster-like headache due to intracranial carotid artery aneurysm

Epithelial Ovarian Cancer Diagnosis of SecondHarmonic Generation Images: A Semiautomatic Collagen Fibers Quantification Protocol

A vast number of human pathologic conditions are directly or indirectly related to tissular collagen structure remodeling. The nonlinear optical microscopy second-harmonic generation has become a powerful tool for imaging biological tissues with anisotropic hyperpolarized structures, such as collagen. During the past years, several quantification methods to analyze and evaluate these images have been developed. However, automated or semiautomated solutions are necessary to ensure objectivity and reproducibility of such analysis. This work describes automation and improvement methods for calculating the anisotropy (using fast Fourier transform analysis and the gray-level co-occurrence matrix). These were applied to analyze biopsy samples of human ovarian epithelial cancer at different stages of malignancy (mucinous, serous, mixed, and endometrial subtypes). The semiautomation procedure enabled us to design a diagnostic protocol that recognizes between healthy and pathologic tissues, as well as between different tumor types.Fil: Zeitoune, Angel Alberto. Divergent thinking could possibly be related to levels of creativity as well as to the perception of color. The Evaluation Test of Divergent Thinking aims to come to allow the study of these correlations. We apply the Evaluation Test of Divergent Thinking to a group of 23 men and 28 women with different ages and different professions and academic qualifications to see, through the three questions in the evaluation test, if they differ in the quantity and quality of thoughts they had and reported to us. Results obtained by men and women were compared. Men obtain significantly better results than women when submitted to the EPDT, when considering the total/ final score (p=.007). When considering individually all the criteria that we reviewed and evaluate to quote the test, that difference only has been significant at two of these criteria points.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Utilization of the excimer laser and a moving piezoelectric mirror to accomplish the customized contact lens ablation to correct high-order aberrations

    Get PDF
The use of the Hartman-Shack sensor in ophthalmology allowed the identification of higher-order aberrations, which make possible the search for methods to correct them. Customized refractive surgery is one of the most successful methods, although there are patients which cannot be submitted to this surgery due to a variety of abnormal limiting factors such as cornea thickness and quantity of higher-order aberrations. Being this an irreversible process, the alternative is to develop a non-surgical method. This work proposes a method to obtain personalized contact lenses to correct high-order aberrations via the development of a customized ablation system using an excimer laser and a moving piezoelectric mirror. The process to produce such lenses consists of four steps. 1) The map of total aberrations of the patient’s eye is measured by using an aberrometer with a Hartman-Shack sensor. 2) The measured aberration map is used to determine the maps for correction and related distribution of laser pulses for the ablation process with the excimer laser. 3) The lens production is performed following the same principle as customized refractive surgery. 4) The quality control of the lens is evaluated by two tests. 4.1) The lens is measured by a non-commercial lensometer, which is assembled specially for this measurement, as the ones commercially available are not capable of measuring asymmetric and irregular surfaces. 4.2) The evaluation of the lens-eye system is made using the aberrometer of the first step in order to verify the residual aberrations. Here, the lenses are ablated with a customized refractive surgery system.FAPESP (07/54195-6

Reinvigorating the sustainable development research agenda: the role of the sustainable development goals (SDG)

© 2017 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) contain a set of 17 measures to foster sustainable development across many areas. It offers a good opportunity to reinvigorate sustainable development research for two main reasons. First, it comprises many areas of SD research, which have become mainstream thanks to the UN SDGs. Second, the fact that the UN and its member countries have committed to attaining SDGs by 2030 has added a sense of urgency to the need to perform quality research on SD on the one hand, and reiterates the need to use the results of this research on the other. Even though the basic concept of sustainability goes back many centuries, it has only recently appeared on the international political agenda. This is partly due to an awakening of the fact that the human ecological pressure on the planet is still much larger than what nature can renew or compensate for. Based on this state of affairs, this paper presents an outline of the process leading to the agreement on the UN SDGs, and looks at some of the ecological aspects as a result of continued pressure of human activities on natural resources. Furthermore, a set of research needs is proposed–also based holistically on updated research trends–discussing the degree of urgency of some measures and explaining why the UN SDGs need to be accorded greater priority in international sustainable development research efforts

Antifungal activity of amphotericin B conjugated to nanosized magnetite in the treatment of paracoccidioidomycosis

This study reports on in vitro and in vivo tests that sought to assess the antifungal activity of a newly developed magnetic carrier system comprising amphotericin B loaded onto the surface of pre-coated (with a double-layer of lauric acid) magnetite nanoparticles. The in vitro tests compared two drugs; i.e., this newly developed form and free amphotericin B. We found that this nanocomplex exhibited antifungal activity without cytotoxicity to human urinary cells and with low cytotoxicity to peritoneal macrophages. We also evaluated the efficacy of the nanocomplex in experimental paracoccidioidomycosis. BALB/c mice were intratracheally infected with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis and treated with the compound for 30 or 60 days beginning the day after infection. The newly developed amphotericin B coupled with magnetic nanoparticles was effective against experimental paracoccidioidomycosis, and it did not induce clinical, biochemical or histopathological alterations. The nanocomplex also did not induce genotoxic effects in bone marrow cells. Therefore, it is reasonable to believe that amphotericin B coupled to magnetic nanoparticles and stabilized with bilayer lauric acid is a promising nanotool for the treatment of the experimental paracoccidioidomycosis because it exhibited antifungal activity that was similar to that of free amphotericin B, did not induce adverse effects in therapeutic doses and allowed for a reduction in the number of applications
