    Augmented Reality Based on SLAM to Assess Spatial Short-Term Memory

    Spatial short-term memory is defined as the limited ability of people to retain and remember the location of elements for short periods of time. In this paper, we present the first AR app based on SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) to assess spatial short-term memory. A total of 55 participants were involved in a study for remembering the real place where four virtual objects were located in the real environment. The participants were divided into two groups: the ARGroup (the participants learned the location of the virtual objects in the real environment in an adaptation phase using AR) and the NoARGroup (the participants learned the location of the objects by looking at photographs). The results indicated that the performance outcomes in remembering objects and their location for the participants in the ARGroup were statistically significantly greater than those obtained by the participants in the NoARGroup. From this result and our observations, we can conclude that touring the augmented environment helped the participants to better remember the location of virtual objects added to the real scene compared to looking at photographs of the environment. Furthermore, statistically significant differences were not found in relation to gender or age. Finally, our app has several advantages: 1) Our app works in any environment and does not require adding real elements to the environment; 2) the evaluators can select any real environment and place the virtual elements where they want and even change them between sessions; and 3) our app could work similar to the way spatial memory does in everyday life

    Battery Manufacturing Resource Assessment to Minimise Component Production Environmental Impacts

    A promising route to attain a reliable impact reduction of supply chain materials is based on considering circular economy approaches, such as material recycling strategies. This work aimed to evaluate potential benefits of recycling scenarios for steel, copper, aluminium and plastic materials to the battery manufacturing stage. Focused on this aim, the life cycle assessment (LCA) and the environmental externalities methodologies were applied to two battery study cases: lithium manganese oxide and vanadium redox flow (VRFB) batteries, based on a cradle-to-gate LCA approach. In general, the results provided an insight into the raw material handling route. Environmental impacts were diminished by more than 20% in almost all the indicators, due to the lower consumption of virgin materials related to the implemented recyclability route. Particularly, VRFB exhibited better recyclability ratio than the Li-ion battery. For the former, the key components were the periphery ones attaining around 70% of impact reduction by recycling steel. Components of the power subsystem were also relevant, reaching around 40% of environmental impact reduction by recycling plastic. The results also foresaw opportunities for membranes, key components of VRFB materials. Based on findings, recycling strategies may improve the total circularity performance and economic viability of the studied systems

    Procesos de transición hacia el retiro deportivo: una revisión sistemática usando la herramienta PRISMA

    The phenomena of sports retreat is a topic relatively new in sports science, for this reason it is addressed currently ideas about the process towards the sports retreat as the last stage in a professional sport career and competitive longevity in long-term athletes. The objective of this systematic revision is to identify researches which involve the way how they assume the transition process towards the sports retreat and the detraining of athletes.   To carry out this work, it was necessary an examination of the data. Scopus, Ebsco and Sciencedirect along august 2022.  The analysis was done through a combination of the terms: Detraining, Retirement and Sport using the inclusion criteria. Published review articles in the last ten years, In English or Spanish that allow access to complete texts. During the search 16.642 articles were found. After applying different filters and keeping in mind the title and the research objectives, 165 of them were taken into consideration, which were examined with the application of the check list suggested by the PRISMA tool. It provided us 17 articles to be considered in this research. From these, two of them come from systematic revision, one of them with PRISMA methodology, besides four quantitative and 11 qualitative. El fenómeno del retiro deportivo es una temática relativamente nueva en el campo de las ciencias del deporte, por ello se abordan ideas actuales acerca del proceso hacia el retiro deportivo, como la última etapa dentro de sus carreras profesionales y longevidad competitiva en deportistas de alto rendimiento. El objetivo de esta revisión sistemática es identificar las investigaciones que hablan sobre la manera como se asume el proceso de transición hacia el retiro deportivo y desentrenamiento en los deportistas. Para ello se realizó una búsqueda en las bases de datos. Scopus, Ebsco y Sciencedirect durante el mes de agosto del año 2022. La consulta se realizó combinando los términos: Detraining, Retirement y Sport utilizando los criterios de inclusión. Artículos de revisión, publicados en los últimos diez años, en idiomas inglés o español y que se tuviera acceso al texto completo. Durante la búsqueda se encontraron 16.642 artículos. Luego de aplicar los diferentes filtros teniendo en cuenta el título y los objetivos de la investigación se tuvieron en cuenta 165 de ellos, a los cuales se les aplicaron de nuevo los ítems incluidos en el check list de la herramienta PRISMA teniendo como resultado 17 artículos para ser contemplados en esta investigación. De estos, dos son de revisión sistemática, 1 de ellos con metodología PRISMA, además cuatro cuantitativas y once de carácter cualitativo

    Exploring the Expanding Universe and Dark Energy using the Statefinder Diagnostic

    The coming few years are likely to witness a dramatic increase in high quality Sn data as current surveys add more high redshift supernovae to their inventory and as newer and deeper supernova experiments become operational. Given the current variety in dark energy models and the expected improvement in observational data, an accurate and versatile diagnostic of dark energy is the need of the hour. This paper examines the Statefinder diagnostic in the light of the proposed SNAP satellite which is expected to observe about 2000 supernovae per year. We show that the Statefinder is versatile enough to differentiate between dark energy models as varied as the cosmological constant on the one hand, and quintessence, the Chaplygin gas and braneworld models, on the other. Using SNAP data, the Statefinder can distinguish a cosmological constant (w=1w=-1) from quintessence models with w0.9w \geq -0.9 and Chaplygin gas models with κ15\kappa \leq 15 at the 3σ3\sigma level if the value of \om is known exactly. The Statefinder gives reasonable results even when the value of \om is known to only 20\sim 20% accuracy. In this case, marginalizing over \om and assuming a fiducial LCDM model allows us to rule out quintessence with w0.85w \geq -0.85 and the Chaplygin gas with κ7\kappa \leq 7 (both at 3σ3\sigma). These constraints can be made even tighter if we use the Statefinders in conjunction with the deceleration parameter. The Statefinder is very sensitive to the total pressure exerted by all forms of matter and radiation in the universe. It can therefore differentiate between dark energy models at moderately high redshifts of z \lleq 10.Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures. Minor typos corrected to agree with version published in MNRAS.     Self Duality and Oblique Confinement in Planar Gauge Theories

    We investigate the non-perturbative structure of two planar Zp×ZpZ_p \times Z_p lattice gauge models and discuss their relevance to two-dimensional condensed matter systems and Josephson junction arrays. Both models involve two compact U(1) gauge fields with Chern-Simons interactions, which break the symmetry down to Zp×ZpZ_p \times Z_p. By identifying the relevant topological excitations (instantons) and their interactions we determine the phase structure of the models. Our results match observed quantum phase transitions in Josephson junction arrays and suggest also the possibility of {\it oblique confining ground states} corresponding to quantum Hall regimes for either charges or vortices.Comment: 32 pages, harvma
