The WFCAM Multi-wavelength Variable Star Catalog
Stellar variability in the near-infrared (NIR) remains largely unexplored.
The exploitation of public science archives with data-mining methods offers a
perspective for the time-domain exploration of the NIR sky. We perform a
comprehensive search for stellar variability using the optical-NIR multi-band
photometric data in the public Calibration Database of the WFCAM Science
Archive (WSA), with the aim of contributing to the general census of variable
stars, and to extend the current scarce inventory of accurate NIR light curves
for a number of variable star classes. We introduce new variability indices
designed for multi-band data with correlated sampling, and apply them for
pre-selecting variable star candidates, i.e., light curves that are dominated
by correlated variations, from noise-dominated ones. Pre-selection criteria are
established by robust numerical tests for evaluating the response of
variability indices to colored noise characteristic to the data. We find 275
periodic variable stars and an additional 44 objects with suspected variability
with uncertain periods or apparently aperiodic variation. Only 44 of these
objects had been previously known, including 11 RR~Lyrae stars in the outskirts
of the globular cluster M3 (NGC~5272). We provide a preliminary classification
of the new variable stars that have well-measured light curves, but the
variability types of a large number of objects remain ambiguous. We classify
most of the new variables as contact binary stars, but we also find several
pulsating stars, among which 34 are probably new field RR~Lyrae and 3 are
likely Cepheids. We also identify 32 highly reddened variable objects close to
previously known dark nebulae, suggesting that these are embedded young stellar
objects. We publish our results and all light-curve data as the WFCAM Variable
Star Catalog.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figure
Vanishing Viscosity Limits and Boundary Layers for Circularly Symmetric 2D Flows
We continue the work of Lopes Filho, Mazzucato and Nussenzveig Lopes [LMN],
on the vanishing viscosity limit of circularly symmetric viscous flow in a disk
with rotating boundary, shown there to converge to the inviscid limit in
-norm as long as the prescribed angular velocity of the
boundary has bounded total variation. Here we establish convergence in stronger
and -Sobolev spaces, allow for more singular angular velocities
, and address the issue of analyzing the behavior of the boundary
layer. This includes an analysis of concentration of vorticity in the vanishing
viscosity limit. We also consider such flows on an annulus, whose two boundary
components rotate independently.

GeMs/GSAOI observations of La Serena 94: an old and far open cluster inside the solar circle
Physical properties were derived for the candidate open cluster La Serena 94,
recently unveiled by the VVV collaboration. Thanks to the exquisite angular
resolution provided by GeMS/GSAOI, we could characterize this system in detail,
for the first time, with deep photometry in JHK - bands. Decontaminated
JHK diagrams reach about 5 mag below the cluster turnoff in H. The locus
of red clump giants in the colour - colour diagram, together with an extinction
law, was used to obtain an average extinction of . The
same stars were considered as standard - candles to derive the cluster
distance, kpc. Isochrones were matched to the cluster colour -
magnitude diagrams to determine its age, , and
metallicity, . A core radius of pc was
found by fitting King models to the radial density profile. By adding up the
visible stellar mass to an extrapolated mass function, the cluster mass was
estimated as M, consistent with an
integrated magnitude of and a tidal radius of
pc. The overall characteristics of La Serena 94 confirm that
it is an old open cluster located in the Crux spiral arm towards the fourth
Galactic quadrant and distant kpc from the Galactic centre. The
cluster distorted structure, mass segregation and age indicate that it is a
dynamically evolved stellar system.Comment: 16 pages, 24 figures, 2 Tables, accepted by MNRAS; corrected typo
Non-parametric comparison of histogrammed two-dimensional data distributions using the Energy Test
When monitoring complex experiments, comparison is often made between regularly acquired histograms of data and reference histograms which represent the ideal state of the equipment. With the larger HEP experiments now ramping up, there is a need for automation of this task since the volume of comparisons could overwhelm human operators. However, the two-dimensional histogram comparison tools available in ROOT have been noted in the past to exhibit shortcomings. We discuss a newer comparison test for two-dimensional histograms, based on the Energy Test of Aslan and Zech, which provides more conclusive
discrimination between histograms of data coming from different distributions than methods provided in a recent ROOT release. The Science and Technology Facilities Council, U

In a ARMA-APARCH time series model with innovations Z, the delta-stationarity condition of the APARCH process involves the delta-th moment of the difference between the absolute value of the innovations with the product of the asymmetry parameter and the innovations. This moment allows calculating more efficiently the estimates of the parameters of the model by maximum likelihood. In this article, we obtain explicit expressions of this delta - th moment where Z has stable and GEV distribution. These moments have been implemented in our GEVStableGarch package available in CRAN R-PROJECT developed to estimate the parameters of ARMA-GARCH / APARCH models with stable innovations and GEV.En un modelo de series temporales ARMA-APARCH con innovaciones Z, la condición de delta - estacionariedad del proceso APARCH envuelve el delta-ésimo momento de la diferencia entre el valor absoluto de las innovaciones con el producto del parámetro de asimetría y las innovaciones. Application of an indoor greenhouse in the energy and thermal comfort performance in a kindergarten school building in the South of Portugal in winter conditions
In this work a numerical model, which simulates the buildings thermal response and evaluates the indoor environment comfort, in transient conditions, is used in the application of an indoor greenhouse in the energy and thermal comfort performance in a kindergarten school building, in the South of Portugal, in Winter conditions. In the numerical simulation of the kindergarten school building, the 25 compartments, the 498 building main bodies and the 42 windows glasses, as well as two schools and three residential surrounding main buildings, are considered. This numerical model is applied in the evaluation of the kindergarten thermal behavior, using the indoor temperature field, and the occupants thermal comfort levels, using the PMV and PPD indexes. After to be compared the numerical and experimental indoor air temperatures field and identified the indoor thermal uncomfortable spaces, the numerical model is used in the evaluation of the indoor greenhouse performance, in order to increase the indoor air temperature and thermal comfort levels, using solar renewable energy, without increase of the kindergarten energy consumption. It is analyzed in detail the greenhouse ventilation operating time and the warm airflow transport way, using an internal ducts system or a corridor space, from the greenhouse to the indoor coldest spaces
