    Ultracold collision properties of metastable alkaline-earth atoms

    Ultra-cold collisions of spin-polarized 24Mg,40Ca, and 88Sr in the metastable 3P2 excited state are investigated. We calculate the long-range interaction potentials and estimate the scattering length and the collisional loss rate as a function of magnetic field. The estimates are based on molecular potentials between 3P2 alkaline-earth atoms obtained from ab initio atomic and molecular structure calculations. The scattering lengths show resonance behavior due to the appearance of a molecular bound state in a purely long-range interaction potential and are positive for magnetic fields below 50 mT. A loss-rate model shows that losses should be smallest near zero magnetic field and for fields slightly larger than the resonance field, where the scattering length is also positive.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Design of an information system for metrology contents

    Dimensional and form inspections are key to the manufacturing and assembly of products. Product verification can involve a number of different measuring instruments operated using their dedicated software. Typically, each of these instruments with their associated software is more suitable for the verification of a pre-specified quality characteristic of the product than others. The number of different systems and software applications to perform a complete measurement of products and assemblies within a manufacturing organisation is therefore expected to be large. This number becomes even larger as advances in measurement technologies are made. The idea of a universal software application for any instrument still appears to be only a theoretical possibility. A need for information integration is apparent. In this paper, a design of an information system to consistently manage (store, search, retrieve, search, secure) measurement results from various instruments and software applications is introduced. Two of the main ideas underlying the proposed system include abstracting structures and formats of measurement files from the data so that complexity and compatibility between different approaches to measurement data modelling is avoided. Secondly, the information within a file is enriched with meta-information to facilitate its consistent storage and retrieval.     Language and memory for object location

    In three experiments, we investigated the influence of two types of language on memory for object location: demonstratives (this, that) and possessives (my, your). Participants first read instructions containing demonstratives/possessives to place objects at different locations, and then had to recall those object locations (following object removal). Experiments 1 and 2 tested contrasting predictions of two possible accounts of language on object location memory: the Expectation Model (Coventry, Griffiths, & Hamilton, 2014) and the congruence account (Bonfiglioli, Finocchiaro, Gesierich, Rositani, & Vescovi, 2009). In Experiment 3, the role of attention allocation as a possible mechanism was investigated. Results across all three experiments show striking effects of language on object location memory, with the pattern of data supporting the Expectation Model. In this model, the expected location cued by language and the actual location are concatenated leading to (mis)memory for object location, consistent with models of predictive coding (Bar, 2009; Friston, 2003)

    Analysis of IL2/IL21 Gene Variants in Cholestatic Liver Diseases Reveals an Association with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis

    Background/Aims: The chromosome 4q27 region harboring IL2 and IL21 is an established risk locus for ulcerative colitis (UC) and various other autoimmune diseases. Considering the strong coincidence of primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) with UC and the increased frequency of other autoimmune disorders in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), we investigated whether genetic variation in the IL2/IL21 region may also modulate the susceptibility to these two rare cholestatic liver diseases. Methods: Four strongly UC-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the KIAA1109/TENR/IL2/IL21 linkage disequilibrium block were genotyped in 124 PBC and 41 PSC patients. Control allele frequencies from 1,487 healthy, unrelated Caucasians were available from a previous UC association study. Results: The minor alleles of all four markers were associated with a decreased susceptibility to PSC (rs13151961: p = 0.013, odds ratio (OR) 0.34; rs13119723: p = 0.023, OR 0.40; rs6822844: p = 0.031, OR 0.41; rs6840978: p = 0.043, OR 0.46). Moreover, a haplotype consisting of the four minor alleles also had a protective effect on PSC susceptibility (p = 0.0084, OR 0.28). A haplotype of the four major alleles was independently associated with PSC when excluding the patients with concomitant inflammatory bowel disease (p = 0.033, OR 4.18). Conclusion: The IL2/IL21 region may be one of the highly suggestive but so far rarely identified shared susceptibility loci for PSC and UC. Copyright (C) 2011 S. Karger AG, Base

    Fate of Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products in Irrigated Wastewater Effluent

    The potential human and environmental health risks posed by pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have been identified as a research priority at both the federal and state level. It has been well documented that municipal wastewater treatment plants with surface discharge fail to remove many of these emerging contaminants; however, little research has been conducted to determine the capability of lagoon treatment systems to remove PPCPs or of organic-matter-rich clay loam soils to filter PPCPs and reduce surface water pollution. The objective of this study was to determine the fate and transport of selected pharmaceuticals in lagoon-treated wastewater effluent applied as cropland irrigation in Illinois. In this study, we were able to determine the presence of six of the seven priority PPCPs in lagoon-treated wastewater effluent; verify the absence of studied PPCPs in soil and well water prior to treatment; determine characteristics of cropland soil that may impact PPCP transport when wastewater irrigation begins; and conduct sorption isotherm studies to understand the sorption and desorption capabilities of field soils in Lexington, Illinois.Illinois Sustainable Technology Center, Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Grant Number HWR12223Ope

    Characterization of the equine skeletal muscle transcriptome identifies novel functional responses to exercise training

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Digital gene expression profiling was used to characterize the assembly of genes expressed in equine skeletal muscle and to identify the subset of genes that were differentially expressed following a ten-month period of exercise training. The study cohort comprised seven Thoroughbred racehorses from a single training yard. Skeletal muscle biopsies were collected at rest from the <it>gluteus medius </it>at two time points: T<sub>1 </sub>- untrained, (9 ± 0.5 months old) and T<sub>2 </sub>- trained (20 ± 0.7 months old).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The most abundant mRNA transcripts in the muscle transcriptome were those involved in muscle contraction, aerobic respiration and mitochondrial function. A previously unreported over-representation of genes related to RNA processing, the stress response and proteolysis was observed. Following training 92 tags were differentially expressed of which 74 were annotated. Sixteen genes showed increased expression, including the mitochondrial genes <it>ACADVL</it>, <it>MRPS21 </it>and <it>SLC25A29 </it>encoded by the nuclear genome. Among the 58 genes with decreased expression, <it>MSTN</it>, a negative regulator of muscle growth, had the greatest decrease.</p> <p>Functional analysis of all expressed genes using FatiScan revealed an asymmetric distribution of 482 Gene Ontology (GO) groups and 18 KEGG pathways. Functional groups displaying highly significant (<it>P </it>< 0.0001) increased expression included mitochondrion, oxidative phosphorylation and fatty acid metabolism while functional groups with decreased expression were mainly associated with structural genes and included the sarcoplasm, laminin complex and cytoskeleton.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Exercise training in Thoroughbred racehorses results in coordinate changes in the gene expression of functional groups of genes related to metabolism, oxidative phosphorylation and muscle structure.</p

    Integrated safety analysis of filgotinib for ulcerative colitis: Results from SELECTION and SELECTIONLTE

    BACKGROUND: Filgotinib 200 mg (FIL200) is an approved treatment for adults with moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis (UC). AIM: To report integrated safety data from the phase 2b/3 SELECTION study (NCT02914522) and its ongoing long-term extension study SELECTIONLTE (NCT02914535). METHODS: Safety outcomes were analysed in adults with moderately to severely active UC who received FIL200, filgotinib 100 mg (FIL100) or placebo once daily throughout the 11-week SELECTION induction study, the 47-week SELECTION maintenance study (if applicable) and SELECTIONLTE (if applicable). Exposure-adjusted incidence rates (EAIRs) per 100 censored patient-years of exposure with 95% confidence intervals were reported for treatment-emergent adverse events (AEs). Certain AE data were presented in subgroups, including age and prior biologic exposure status. RESULTS: This interim analysis included 1348 patients representing 3326.2 patient-years of exposure. Baseline characteristics of patients entering SELECTION were similar across treatment groups. EAIRs for serious infection, thromboembolic events and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) were consistently low across treatment groups. Most patients with MACE had cardiovascular risk factors. The EAIR for herpes zoster was numerically higher for FIL200 than for placebo. Infection incidences were numerically higher in biologic-experienced than biologic-naive patients. Higher incidences of certain AEs in patients 65 years of age or older were as expected. Four deaths occurred, including three cardiovascular deaths, none of which was considered related to filgotinib. CONCLUSION: FIL200 and FIL100 were well tolerated with no unexpected safety signals in patients with moderately to severely active UC, regardless of previous biologic exposure or age

    Genome sequencing of the extinct Eurasian wild aurochs, Bos primigenius, illuminates the phylogeography and evolution of cattle

    Background Domestication of the now-extinct wild aurochs, Bos primigenius, gave rise to the two major domestic extant cattle taxa, B. taurus and B. indicus. While previous genetic studies have shed some light on the evolutionary relationships between European aurochs and modern cattle, important questions remain unanswered, including the phylogenetic status of aurochs, whether gene flow from aurochs into early domestic populations occurred, and which genomic regions were subject to selection processes during and after domestication. Here, we address these questions using whole-genome sequencing data generated from an approximately 6,750-year-old British aurochs bone and genome sequence data from 81 additional cattle plus genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism data from a diverse panel of 1,225 modern animals. Results Phylogenomic analyses place the aurochs as a distinct outgroup to the domestic B. taurus lineage, supporting the predominant Near Eastern origin of European cattle. Conversely, traditional British and Irish breeds share more genetic variants with this aurochs specimen than other European populations, supporting localized gene flow from aurochs into the ancestors of modern British and Irish cattle, perhaps through purposeful restocking by early herders in Britain. Finally, the functions of genes showing evidence for positive selection in B. taurus are enriched for neurobiology, growth, metabolism and immunobiology, suggesting that these biological processes have been important in the domestication of cattle. Conclusions This work provides important new information regarding the origins and functional evolution of modern cattle, revealing that the interface between early European domestic populations and wild aurochs was significantly more complex than previously thought

    Profiling Supercooled Liquid Water Clouds with Multi-Frequency Radar

    An optimal estimation scheme is employed to demonstrate the utility of using multi-band radar observations for estimating supercooled liquid profiles. Qualitative comparisons with microphysical probe images show that the retrievals are capable of producing supercooled liquid consistent with in situ data. Finally, a path forward for quantifying performance and extending the study to a more robust measurement suite is given
