    Coronavirus disease -19 is a novel pandemic contagious respiratory infection that frequently presents with fever and dry cough. However, it can present with other rare symptoms. As this disease is a new disease, the full picture of the disease presentation is not yet clear, and it might present with symptoms and signs of other common diseases. Here, we report a 40 year old female who presented with acute onset nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and vague abdominal pain as a clinical picture of appendicitis, but her CT abdomen image showed normal appendix, bilateral patchy peripheral lung basal consolidation, and ground-glass attenuation, so she was tested for coronavirus disease-19, which was positive

    The anticariogenic effect of xylitol on seven Streptococcus mutans strains

    Introduction: Xylitol can affect caries-inducing bacteria; however, different Streptococcus mutans strains might respond differently. Aim: To investigate the effect of xylitol on biofilm formation and metabolic activity of seven S. mutans strains. Methods: Seven S. mutans strains (UA159, A32-2, NG8, 10449, UA130, LM7, and OMZ175) were inoculated into 96-well microtiter plates and were tested with various xylitol concentrations (0.0, 0.0016, 0.0031, 0.0063, 0.0125, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.8 g/mL) for inhibition of biofilm formation and bacterial metabolic activity by recording absorbance values. Lactate dehydrogenase and extracellular polysaccharide assays were conducted at 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 g xylitol/mL. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance, Tukey’s, paired t, and LSD tests at 0.05 significance level. Results: Xylitol produced a significant decrease in bacterial biofilm formation compared to controls at 0.4 g/mL, with almost complete lack of biofilm formation at 0.8 g/mL. This was consistent with metabolic activity which demonstrated a significant activity reduction occurring for all strains at 0.4 g/mL, and a complete lack of activity at 0.8 g/mL for all seven strains. There was a trend for lower LDH and EPS production with the increase in xylitol concentration especially with UA159, UA130, and NG8. Conclusion: Xylitol has a clear anticariogenic effect on S. mutans which was slightly different depending on the tested strain confirming that the benefit of xylitol might vary from one patient to another. The effect is more apparent at concentrations of 0.4 g/mL and higher

    Awareness and attitude toward using dental magnification among dental students and residents at King Abdulaziz University, Faculty of Dentistry

    Abstract Background The authors conducted a study aimed to assess the awareness and attitude among dental students and residents at King Abdulaziz University, Faculty of Dentistry (KAUFD) toward using dental magnification. Methods An e-questionnaire was formulated then sent to dental students and residents (n = 651). The questionnaire included questions that assessed both the awareness and attitude toward using dental magnification. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 22. The chi-square test was used to establish relationships between categorical variables. Results The response rate was 69.7 % (n = 454). Of those, 78.1 % did not use magnification during dental procedures. However, 81.8 % agreed that dental magnification could enhance the accuracy and quality of their dental work. Thus, 91.6 % thought it would be useful in endodontics and 46.3 % voted for surgery. Of the 21.9 % that used magnification, dental loupes were mostly used, 55.9 %. The majority (59.4 %) of the participants believed that using dental magnification should be introduced by faculty beginning in Year I of dental school. Conclusions Among our respondents, most of the undergraduate students did not use dental magnification nor attended courses in the use of dental magnifications.     Evaluating the aerodynamic coefficients of flying vehicles such as missiles is a key step in their design and development procedures. In practice, the aerodynamic coefficients can be estimated using experimental measurements, numerical simulations, or using empirical and semi-empirical engineering tools. In the present paper, these three approaches are compared in the context of examining the aerodynamic coefficients of a fin-stabilized tactical missile. Supersonic flight conditions up to Mach 4 at incidence up to 18 degrees are considered. Lift and drag coefficients as well as the centre of pressure locations based on the three approaches are compared. The flow features around the missile are explored based on the numerical simulations

    A variable stiffness soft gripper using granular jamming and biologically inspired pneumatic muscles

    As the domains in which robots operate change the objects a robot may be required to grasp and manipulate are likely to vary significantly and often. Furthermore there is increasing likelihood that in the future robots will work collaboratively alongside people. There has therefore been interest in the development of biologically inspired robot designs which take inspiration from nature. This paper presents the design and testing of a variable stiffness, three fingered soft gripper which uses pneumatic muscles to actuate the fingers and granular jamming to vary their stiffness. This gripper is able to adjust its stiffness depending upon how fragile/deformable the object being grasped is. It is also lightweight and low inertia making it better suited to operation near people. Each finger is formed from a cylindrical rubber bladder filled with a granular material. It is shown how decreasing the pressure inside the finger increases the jamming effect and raises finger stiffness. The paper shows experimentally how the finger stiffness can be increased from 21 to 71 N/m. The paper also describes the kinematics of the fingers and demonstrates how they can be position-controlled at a range of different stiffness values

    Global Variation of Nutritional Status in Children Undergoing Chronic Peritoneal Dialysis : A Longitudinal Study of the International Pediatric Peritoneal Dialysis Network

    While children approaching end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) are considered at risk of uremic anorexia and underweight they are also exposed to the global obesity epidemic. We sought to investigate the variation of nutritional status in children undergoing chronic peritoneal dialysis (CPD) around the globe. The distribution and course of body mass index (BMI) standard deviation score over time was examined prospectively in 1001 children and adolescents from 35 countries starting CPD who were followed in the International Pediatric PD Network (IPPN) Registry. The overall prevalence of underweight, and overweight/obesity at start of CPD was 8.9% and 19.7%, respectively. Underweight was most prevalent in South and Southeast Asia (20%), Central Europe (16.7%) and Turkey (15.2%), whereas overweight and obesity were most common in the Middle East (40%) and the US (33%). BMI SDS at PD initiation was associated positively with current eGFR and gastrostomy feeding prior to PD start. Over the course of PD BMI SDS tended to increase on CPD in underweight and normal weight children, whereas it decreased in initially overweight patients. In infancy, mortality risk was amplified by obesity, whereas in older children mortality was markedly increased in association with underweight. Both underweight and overweight are prevalent in pediatric ESKD, with the prevalence varying across the globe. Late dialysis start is associated with underweight, while enteral feeding can lead to obesity. Nutritional abnormalities tend to attenuate with time on dialysis. Mortality risk appears increased with obesity in infants and with underweight in older children.Peer reviewe
