    Access to breast prostheses via a government-funded service in Victoria, Australia

    For many women, the only alternative to breast reconstruction following a mastectomy is to use external prostheses, which need replacing regularly at a cost of up to $395 per prosthesis. Commonwealth and state governments across Australia have responded to this need by providing subsidies to assist in the purchase of breast prostheses. However, current arrangements have been highly variable and sometimes difficult to access. As part of a larger review of breast pros-thesis services in Victoria, Australia, the aim of this research was to evaluate client satisfaction among Victorian women who accessed funds through the State Government\u27s Aids and Equipment Program, compare the responses of the program service providers with the experiences of clients accessing funding, and identify opportunities to improve service provision. <br /

    60 Validated Planets from K2 Campaigns 5-8

    We present a uniform analysis of 155 candidates from the second year of NASA's K2K2 mission (Campaigns 5-8), yielding 60 statistically validated planets spanning a range of properties, with median values of RpR_p = 2.5 RR_\oplus, PP = 7.1 d, TeqT_\mathrm{eq} = 811 K, and JJ = 11.3 mag. The sample includes 24 planets in 11 multi-planetary systems, as well as 18 false positives, and 77 remaining planet candidates. Of particular interest are 18 planets smaller than 2 RR_\oplus, five orbiting stars brighter than JJ = 10 mag, and a system of four small planets orbiting the solar-type star EPIC 212157262. We compute planetary transit parameters and false positive probabilities using a robust statistical framework and present a complete analysis incorporating the results of an intensive campaign of high resolution imaging and spectroscopic observations. This work brings the K2K2 yield to over 360 planets, and by extrapolation we expect that K2K2 will have discovered \sim600 planets before the expected depletion of its on-board fuel in late 2018.Comment: 33 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in A

    A Spectroscopic Binary at the M/L Transition

    We report the discovery of a single-lined spectroscopic binary with an Ultra Cool Dwarf (UCD) primary with a spectral type between M8 and L0.5. This system was discovered during the course of an ongoing survey to monitor L dwarfs for radial velocity variations and is the first known small separation (a<1 AU) spectroscopic binary among dwarfs at the M/L transition. Based on radial-velocity measurements with a typical precision of 300 m/s we estimate the orbital parameters of this system to be P=246.73+/-0.49 d, a1 sin(i)=0.159+/-0.003 AU, M2 sin(i)=0.2062 (M1+M2)^(2/3)+/-0.0034 M_{\sun}. Assuming a primary mass of M1=0.08M_{\sun} (based on spectral type), we estimate the secondary minimum mass to be M2 sin(i)=0.054 M_{\sun}. With future photometric, spectroscopic, and interferometric observations it may be possible to determine the dynamical masses of both components directly, making this system one of the best characterized UCD binaries known.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures.     Exploring the Symbolic/Subsymbolic Continuum: A case study of RAAM

    Exoplanets orbiting pre-main-sequence stars are laboratories for studying planet evolution processes, including atmospheric loss, orbital migration, and radiative cooling. V1298 Tau, a young solar analog with an age of 23 ± 4 Myr, is one such laboratory. The star is already known to host a Jupiter-sized planet on a 24 day orbit. Here, we report the discovery of three additional planets—all between the sizes of Neptune and Saturn—based on our analysis of K2 Campaign 4 photometry. Planets c and d have sizes of 5.6 and 6.4 R⊕, respectively, and with orbital periods of 8.25 and 12.40 days reside 0.25% outside of the nominal 3:2 mean-motion resonance. Planet e is 8.7 R⊕ in size but only transited once in the K2 time series and thus has a period longer than 36 days, but likely shorter than 223 days. The V1298 Tau system may be a precursor to the compact multiplanet systems found to be common by the Kepler mission. However, the large planet sizes stand in sharp contrast to the vast majority of Kepler multiplanet systems, which have planets smaller than 3 R⊕. Simple dynamical arguments suggest total masses of <28 M⊕ and <120 M⊕ for the c–d and d–b planet pairs, respectively. The implied low masses suggest that the planets may still be radiatively cooling and contracting, and perhaps losing atmosphere. The V1298 Tau system offers rich prospects for further follow-up including atmospheric characterization by transmission or eclipse spectroscopy, dynamical characterization through transit-timing variations, and measurements of planet masses and obliquities by radial velocities

    K2 Discovers a Busy Bee: An Unusual Transiting Neptune Found in the Beehive Cluster

    Open clusters have been the focus of several exoplanet surveys but only a few planets have so far been discovered. The \emph{Kepler} spacecraft revealed an abundance of small planets around small, cool stars, therefore, such cluster members are prime targets for exoplanet transit searches. Kepler's new mission, K2, is targeting several open clusters and star-forming regions around the ecliptic to search for transiting planets around their low-mass constituents. Here, we report the discovery of the first transiting planet in the intermediate-age (800 Myr) Beehive cluster (Praesepe). K2-95 is a faint (Kp=15.5mag\mathrm{Kp = 15.5\,mag}) M3.0±0.5\mathrm{M3.0\pm0.5} dwarf from K2's Campaign 5 with an effective temperature of 3471±124K\mathrm{3471 \pm 124\,K}, approximately solar metallicity and a radius of 0.402±0.050R\mathrm{0.402 \pm 0.050 \,R_\odot}. We detected a transiting planet with a radius of 3.470.53+0.78R\mathrm{3.47^{+0.78}_{-0.53} \, R_\oplus} and an orbital period of 10.134 days. We combined photometry, medium/high-resolution spectroscopy, adaptive optics/speckle imaging and archival survey images to rule out any false positive detection scenarios, validate the planet, and further characterize the system. The planet's radius is very unusual as M-dwarf field stars rarely have Neptune-sized transiting planets. The comparatively large radius of K2-95b is consistent with the other recently discovered cluster planets K2-25b (Hyades) and K2-33b (Upper Scorpius), indicating systematic differences in their evolutionary states or formation. These discoveries from K2 provide a snapshot of planet formation and evolution in cluster environments and thus make excellent laboratories to test differences between field-star and cluster planet populations.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figues.
