    Robust detection of quasi-periodic variability: A HAWK-I mini survey of late-T dwarfs

    We present HAWK-I J-band light curves of five late-type T dwarfs (T6.5-T7.5) with a typical duration of four hours, and investigate the evidence for quasi-periodic photometric variability on intra-night timescales. Our photometry reaches precisions in the range 7-20 mmag, after removing instrumental systematics that correlate with sky background, seeing and airmass. Based upon a Lomb-Scargle periodogram analysis, the latest object in the sample - ULAS J2321 (T7.5) - appears to show quasi-periodic variability with a period of 1.64 hours and an amplitude of 3 mmag. Given the low amplitude of variability and presence of systematics in our lightcurves, we discuss a Bayesian approach to robustly determine if quasi-periodic variability is present in a lightcurve affected by red noise. Using this approach, we conclude that the evidence for quasi-periodic variability in ULAS J2321 is not significant. As a result, we suggest that studies which identify quasi-periodic variables using the false alarm probability from a Lomb-Scargle periodogram are likely to over-estimate the number of variable objects, even if field stars are used to set a higher false alarm probability threshold. Instead we argue that a hybrid approach combining a false alarm probability cut, followed by Bayesian model selection, is necessary for robust identification of quasi-periodic variability in lightcurves with red noise

    Infrared spectroscopy of cataclysmic variables: III. Dwarf novae below the period gap and novalike variables

    We present K-band spectra of the short-period dwarf novae YZ Cnc, LY Hya, BK Lyn, T Leo, SW UMa and WZ Sge, the novalike variables DW UMa, V1315 Aql, RW Tri, VY Scl, UU Aqr and GP Com, and a series of field dwarf stars with spectral types ranging from K2-M6. The spectra of the dwarf novae are dominated by emission lines of HI and HeI. The large velocity and equivalent widths of these lines, in conjunction with the fact that the lines are double-peaked in the highest inclination systems, indicate an accretion disc origin. In the case of YZ Cnc and T Leo, for which we obtained time-resolved data covering a complete orbital cycle, the emission lines show modulations in their equivalent widths which are most probably associated with the bright spot (the region where the gas stream collides with the accretion disc). There are no clear detections of the secondary star in any of the dwarf novae below the period gap, yielding upper limits of 10-30% for the contribution of the secondary star to the observed K-band flux. In conjunction with the K-band magnitudes of the dwarf novae, we use the derived secondary star contributions to calculate lower limits to the distances to these systems. The spectra of the novalike variables are dominated by broad, single-peaked emission lines of HI and HeI - even the eclipsing systems we observed do not show the double-peaked profiles predicted by standard accretion disc theory. With the exception of RW Tri, which exhibits NaI, CaI and 12CO absorption features consistent with a M0V secondary contributing 65% of the observed K-band flux, we find no evidence for the secondary star in any of the novalike variables.     A transient tribodynamic approach for the calculation of internal combustion engine piston slap noise

    An analytical/numerical methodology is presented to calculate the radiated noise due to internal combustion engine piston impacts on the cylinder liner through a film of lubricant. Both quasi-static and transient dynamic analyses coupled with impact elasto-hydrodynamics are reported. The local impact impedance is calculated, as well as the transferred energy onto the cylinder liner. The simulations are verified against experimental results for different engine operating conditions and for noise levels calculated in the vicinity of the engine block. Continuous wavelet signal processing is performed to identify the occurrence of piston slap noise events and their spectral content, showing good conformance between the predictions and experimentally acquired signals

    Direct measurement of piston friction of internal-combustion engines using the floating-liner principle

    Piston–cylinder interactions account for a significant portion of frictional losses in an internal-combustion engine. This is mainly as the result of significant changes in the operating conditions (the load, the speed and the temperature) as well as the contact geometry and the encountered topography during a typical engine cycle. These changes alter the regime of lubrication which underlies the mechanisms of friction generation. The multi-variate interactive nature of the problem requires quite complex analyses which do not fully replicate the actual in-situ conditions. Therefore, there is a need for direct measurement of cyclic friction under controlled conditions. The paper describes the use of a novel floating-liner arrangement which is capable of direct measurement of friction, its transitory mechanisms, as well as determination of the regime of lubrication

    Transient Tribo-Dynamics of Thermo-Elastic Compliant High-Performance Piston Skirts

    Advanced piston technology for motorsport applications is driven through development of lightweight pistons with preferentially compliant short partial skirts. The preferential compliance is achieved through structural stiffening, such that a greater entrainment wedge is achieved at the skirt’s bottom edge through thermo-elastic deformation, whilst better conforming contact geometry at the top of the skirt. In practice, the combination of some of these conditions is intended to improve the load-carrying capacity and reduce friction. The approach is fundamental to the underlying ethos of race and high-performance engine technology. Contact loads of the order of 5 kN and contact kinematics in the range 0–35 m/s result in harsh transient tribological conditions. Therefore, piston design requires detailed transient analysis, which integrates piston dynamics, thermo-elastic distortion and transient elastohydrodynamics. The paper provides such a detailed analysis as well as verification of the same using non-invasive ultrasonic-assisted lubricant film thickness measurement from a fired engine under normal operating conditions, an approach not hitherto reported in literature. Good agreement is noted between measured film thickness and predictions

    A parameter study of the eclipsing CV in the Kepler field, KIS J192748.53+444724.5

    We present high-speed, three-colour photometry of the eclipsing dwarf nova KIS J192748.53+444724.5 (KISJ1927) which is located in the Kepler field. Our data reveal sharp features corresponding to the eclipses of the accreting white dwarf followed by the bright spot where the gas stream joins the accretion disc. We determine the system parameters via a parametrized model of the eclipse fitted to the observed light curve. We obtain a mass ratio of q = 0.570 ± 0.011 and an orbital inclination of 84. ◦6 ± 0. ◦3. The primary mass is Mw = 0.69 ± 0.07 M. The donor star’s mass and radius are found to be Md = 0.39 ± 0.04 M and Rd = 0.43 ± 0.01 R, respectively. From the fluxes of the white dwarf eclipse, we find a white dwarf temperature of Tw = 23000 ± 3000 K, and a photometric distance to the system of 1600 ± 200 pc, neglecting the effects of interstellar reddening. The white dwarf temperature in KISJ1927 implies the white dwarf is accreting at an average rate of M˙ = 1.4 ± 0.8 × 10−9 M yr−1, in agreement with estimates of the secular mass loss rate from the donor

    Precise mass and radius values for the white dwarf and low mass M dwarf in the pre-cataclysmic binary NN Serpentis

    We derive precise system parameters for the pre-cataclysmic binary, NN Ser. From light curve fitting we find an orbital inclination of i = 89.6 +/- 0.2 deg. From the HeII absorption line we find K_{WD}= 62.3 +/- 1.9 km/s. The irradiation-induced emission lines from the surface of the secondary star give a range of observed radial velocities. The corrected values give a radial velocity of K_{sec}= 301 +/- 3 km/s, with an error dominated by the systematic effects of the model. This leads to a binary separation of a = 0.934 +/- 0.009 R_{sun}, radii of R_{WD} = 0.0211 +/- 0.0002 R_{sun} and R_{sec} = 0.149 +/- 0.002 R_{sun} and masses of M_{WD} = 0.535 +/- 0.012 M_{sun} and M_{sec} = 0.111 +/- 0.004 M_{sun}. The masses and radii of both components of NN Ser were measured independently of any mass-radius relation. For the white dwarf, the measured mass, radius and temperature show excellent agreement with a `thick' hydrogen layer of fractional mass M_{H}/{M}_{WD} = 10^{-4}. The measured radius of the secondary star is 10% larger than predicted by models, however, correcting for irradiation accounts for most of this inconsistency, hence the secondary star in NN Ser is one of the first precisely measured very low mass objects to show good agreement with models. ULTRACAM r', i' and z' photometry taken during the primary eclipse determines the colours of the secondary star as (r'-i')_{sec}= 1.4 +/- 0.1 and (i'-z')_{sec} = 0.8 +/- 0.1 which corresponds to a spectral type of M4 +/- 0.5. This is consistent with the derived mass, demonstrating that there is no detectable heating of the unirradiated face, despite intercepting radiative energy from the white dwarf which exceeds its own luminosity by over a factor of 20.Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures, 8 tables, minor changes, accepted for publication in MNRA

    A deep WISE search for very late type objects and the discovery of two halo/thick-disc T dwarfs : WISE 0013+0634 and WISE 0833+0052

All rights reservedA method is defined for identifying late-T and Y dwarfs in WISE down to low values of signal-to-noise. This requires a WISE detection only in the W2-band and uses the statistical properties of the WISE multiframe measurements and profile fit photometry to reject contamination resulting from non-point-like objects, variables and moving sources. To trace our desired parameter space, we use a control sample of isolated non-moving non-variable point sources from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and identify a sample of 158 WISE W2-only candidates down to a signal-to-noise limit of eight. For signal-to-noise ranges >10 and 8-10, respectively, similar to 45 and similar to 90 per cent of our sample fall outside the selection criteria published by the WISE team, mainly due to the type of constraints placed on the number of individual W2 detections. We present follow-up of eight candidates and identify WISE 0013+0634 and WISE 0833+0052, T8 and T9 dwarfs with high proper motion (similar to 1.3 and similar to 1.8 arcsec yr(-1)). Both objects show a mid-infrared/near-infrared excess of similar to 1-1.5 mag and are K band suppressed. Distance estimates lead to space motion constraints that suggest halo (or at least thick disc) kinematics. We then assess the reduced proper motion diagram of WISE ultracool dwarfs, which suggests that late-T and Y dwarfs may have a higher thick-disc/halo population fraction than earlier objects.Peer reviewe
