Researchers have tested Meyer’s (1995, 2003) minority stress theory and have documented the negative impact that minority stress can have on the psychological well-being for minorities. However, few studies have examined the role of multiple minority identities or the protective factors that may buffer against psychological distress. The present study utilized quantitative methodology to examine minority stress theory in a sample of gay men of color. A paper and pencil self-report survey was provided to 302 voluntary adult Gay men of color in Southeastern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. The measures gathered information about participant’s gay and ethnic identity salience, spirituality, psychological distress, and internalized heterosexism. The findings of the present study provide support for minority stress theory with gay men of color. Specifically, the findings provide support for the examination of ethnic and gay identity as proximal stressors that contribute to psychological distress and internalized heterosexism. However, the findings do not offer support for the examination of spirituality as a moderator between gay and ethnic identity and psychological distress and internalized heterosexism. The findings from this study fill a gap in the psychological literature by examining minority stress theory in relation to ethnic and gay identity and provide clinical and research implications for work with gay men of color

The cooperative and collaborative work between Universities and Libraries are key points for teachers, researchers and students to make progress in their studies and research. The Library Linkage Initiative has pursued this purpose since its creation, and it has been very useful for many Institutions, Universities and Libraries in America and Spain, specially for those with scant resources. In PrEBi UNLP it has been created the Celsius software, which has become the standard application for management of users requests in the Initiative. The result of many years of use, improvement and experience acquisition has result in Celsius Network which has made a breakthrough in the Celsius development history. This last version intends to connect all instances of Celsius in a network, meeting the needs of users and operators that belong to the participants Institutions members of ISTEC. In the following article we have included a brief description of what ISTEC, LL Initiative and Celsius are -in order to present global view where Celsius Software fits- and a detailed description of users needs, new features and advantages in Celsius Network as well

    Get PDF
Social networks provide a fairly wide range of data that allows one way or another to evaluate the effect of the dissemination of information. This article presents the results of a study that describes methods for determining the key parameters of the model needed to analyze and predict the dissemination of information in social networks. An approach based on the analysis of statistical data on user behavior in social networks is proposed. The process of evaluating the main features of the model is described, including the mathematical methods used for data analysis and information dissemination modeling. The study aims to understand the processes of information dissemination in social networks and develop recommendations for the effective use of social networks as a communication and brand promotion tool, as well as to consider the analytical properties of the classical susceptible-infected-removed (SIR) model and evaluate its applicability to the problem of information dissemination. The results of the study can be used to create algorithms and techniques that will effectively manage the process of information dissemination in social networks

Constraining Torus Models for AGNs Using X-Ray Observations

In Unification Models, Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are believed to be surrounded by an axisymmetric structure of dust and gas, which greatly influences their observed properties according to the direction from which they are observed. The main aim of this work is to constrain the properties of this obscuring material using X-Ray observations. The distribution of column densities observed by Chandra in the Chandra Deep Field South is used to determine geometrical constraints for already proposed torus models. It is found that the best torus model is given by a classical `donut shape' with an exponential angular dependency of the density profile. The opening angle is strongly constrained by the observed column densities. Other proposed torus models are clearly rejected by the X-Ray observations.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, submitted to A&

Fundus2Angio: A Conditional GAN Architecture for Generating Fluorescein Angiography Images from Retinal Fundus Photography

Carrying out clinical diagnosis of retinal vascular degeneration using Fluorescein Angiography (FA) is a time consuming process and can pose significant adverse effects on the patient. Angiography requires insertion of a dye that may cause severe adverse effects and can even be fatal. Currently, there are no non-invasive systems capable of generating Fluorescein Angiography images. However, retinal fundus photography is a non-invasive imaging technique that can be completed in a few seconds. In order to eliminate the need for FA, we propose a conditional generative adversarial network (GAN) to translate fundus images to FA images. The proposed GAN consists of a novel residual block capable of generating high quality FA images. These images are important tools in the differential diagnosis of retinal diseases without the need for invasive procedure with possible side effects. Our experiments show that the proposed architecture outperforms other state-of-the-art generative networks. Furthermore, our proposed model achieves better qualitative results indistinguishable from real angiograms.Comment: 14 pages, Accepted to 15th International Symposium on Visual Computing 202

AbstractBackgroundCholedochal cysts are rare. They usually present during childhood in women, but it can also be seen during pregnancy. Clinical signs and symptoms are obscured during this time, thus it can complicate the diagnosis and represent a life threatening complication for both the mother and the child.ObjectiveTo communicate the case of 3 pregnant patients with choledochal cyst.Clinical casesThree pregnant women in which choledochal cyst were diagnosed. Two developed signs of cholangitis. The first one underwent a hepatic-jejunostomy, but had an abortion and died on postoperative day 10. The second one had a preterm caesarean operation due to foetal distress and underwent a hepatic-jejunostomy 4 weeks later; during her recovery she had a gastric perforation and died of septic complications. The third one did not develop cholangitis or jaundice. She had an uneventful pregnancy and had a hepatic-jejunostomy 4 weeks later with good results.ConclusionsManagement of choledochal cysts during pregnancy is related to the presence of cholangitis. When they do not respond to medical treatment, decompression of the biliary tree is indicated. Definitive treatment should be performed after resolution of the pregnancy

    Get PDF

Genotoxicity Evaluation of Two Derived Products from Allium Extracts: s-propylmercaptocysteine and s-propyl Mercaptoglutathione

Propyl-propane-thiosulfonate (PTSO) is one of the main organosulfur compounds present in Allium essential oils with a widely documented biological activity. For this reason, it could be used as a food and feed additive in the agri-food industry. A genotoxicity evaluation of substances and their metabolites present in food is necessary to guarantee the consumer's health following the recommendations of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). To evaluate the toxicological profile of derivatives of PTSO, the cytotoxicity, an Ames test, a micronucleus test and the comet assay were performed. Results showed that non-cytotoxic effects were observed in Caco-2 exposed to s-propyl mercaptocysteine (CSSP) and s-propyl mercaptoglutathione (GSSP) (0–450 μM). The mutagenicity index remained in the range of 0.6–1.4 for both compounds, showing no mutagenic effects for the concentrations of 5000–312.5 μg GSSP/plate and 250–15.63 μg CSSP/plate. Moreover, the % binucleated cells with micronuclei were 1.3–2.2 and 1.6–2.7 for GSSP and GSSP, respectively. For comet assays there was no DNA-genotoxic or oxidative damage in a concentration range of 112.5–450 μM. Therefore, we can conclude that these compounds are not genotoxic at the conditions tested. These results support that the presence of CSSP and GSSP in the food/feed is not of concern, although further studies are needed to complete their safety profile.Junta de Andalucía AT17_5323_USE, P18-TP-2147Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades FPU2019-0124
