    Differential Effects of Reduced Foot Sole Sensitivity and Nerve Conduction Velocity on Postural Control and Functional Gait

    INTRODUCTION: Peripheral neuropathy is characterized by a loss of foot sole sensitivity and slowed nerve conduction velocity. Individuals with peripheral neuropathy have decreased postural control ability and functional gait performance. No research was found that differentiated the effects of the main symptoms of peripheral neuropathy on postural control and functional gait. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the differential effects of reduced foot sole sensitivity and slowed nerve conduction velocity on postural control and functional gait. METHODS: Two main clinical symptoms, H-index and foot sole sensitivity were evaluated among 35 participants. Outcome variables are the center of pressure standard deviation in the anteroposterior direction (SDAP) and the center of pressure average velocity (Vavg) during 30 seconds eyes open quiet standing, 6-minute walk distance (6MWD), and timed-up-and-go duration (TUG). RESULTS: Participants were separated into three groups symptomologically: Less affected (LA, 73±2 years old, 68.4±3.5kg, 1.62±0.02m, H-index: 89.7±3.4, range 78.0-109.4, cm2/ms2, Foot sole sensitivity score: 8.6±0.5, range 6-10), moderately affected (MA, 74±2 years old, 77.2±4.1kg, 1.65±0.02m, H-index: 60.2±3.4, range 42.8-76-6, cm2/ms2, Foot sole sensitivity score: 8.7±0.5, range 6-10), and severely affected (SA, 73±1 years old, 95.2±6.5kg, 1.73±0.03m, H-index: 61.8±2.1, range 45.6-75.5, cm2/ms2, Foot sole sensitivity score: 2.2±0.6, range 0-5).     Improved Limits on B0B^{0} decays to invisible (+γ)(+\gamma) final states

    We establish improved upper limits on branching fractions for B0 decays to final States 10 where the decay products are purely invisible (i.e., no observable final state particles) and for final states where the only visible product is a photon. Within the Standard Model, these decays have branching fractions that are below the current experimental sensitivity, but various models of physics beyond the Standard Model predict significant contributions for these channels. Using 471 million BB pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II e+e- storage ring at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, we establish upper limits at the 90% confidence level of 2.4x10^-5 for the branching fraction of B0-->Invisible and 1.7x10^-5 for the branching fraction of B0-->Invisible+gammaComment: 8 pages, 3 postscript figures, submitted to Phys.     Measurement of Branching Fractions and Rate Asymmetries in the Rare Decays B -> K(*) l+ l-

    In a sample of 471 million BB events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- collider we study the rare decays B -> K(*) l+ l-, where l+ l- is either e+e- or mu+mu-. We report results on partial branching fractions and isospin asymmetries in seven bins of di-lepton mass-squared. We further present CP and lepton-flavor asymmetries for di-lepton masses below and above the J/psi resonance. We find no evidence for CP or lepton-flavor violation. The partial branching fractions and isospin asymmetries are consistent with the Standard Model predictions and with results from other experiments.Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, accepted by Phys.     Search for lepton-number violating processes in B+ -> h- l+ l+ decays

    We have searched for the lepton-number violating processes B+ -> h- l+ l+ with h- = K-/pi- and l+ = e+/mu+, using a sample of 471+/-3 million BBbar events collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II e+e- collider at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.     Classification and incidence of cancers in adolescents and young adults in England 1979–1997

    Cancer patients aged 15–24 years have distinct special needs. High quality cancer statistics are required for service planning. Data presented by primary site are inappropriate for this age group. We have developed a morphology-based classification and applied it to national cancer registration data for England 1979–1997. The study included 25 000 cancers and 134 million person–years at risk. Rates for each diagnostic group by age, sex and time period (1979–83, 1984–87, 1988–92, 1993–1997) were calculated. Overall rates in 15–19 and 20–24-year-olds were 144 and 226 per million person–years respectively. Lymphomas showed the highest rates in both age groups. Rates for leukaemias and bone tumours were lower in 20–24 year olds. Higher rates for carcinomas, central nervous system tumours, germ-cell tumours, soft tissue sarcomas and melanoma were seen in the older group. Poisson regression showed incidence increased over the study period by an average of 1.5% per annum (P<0.0001). Significant increases were seen in non-Hodgkins lymphoma (2.3%), astrocytoma (2.3%), germ-cell tumours (2.3%), melanoma (5.1%) and carcinoma of the thyroid (3.5%) and ovary (3.0%). Cancers common in the elderly are uncommon in adolescents and young adults. The incidence of certain cancers in the latter is increasing. Future studies should be directed towards aetiology

    Observation of time-reversal violation in the B0 meson system

Copyright @ 2012 American Physical Society.Although CP violation in the B meson system has been well established by the B factories, there has been no direct observation of time-reversal violation. The decays of entangled neutral B mesons into definite flavor states (B0 or B¯¯¯0), and J/ψK0L or cc¯K0S final states (referred to as B+ or B−), allow comparisons between the probabilities of four pairs of T-conjugated transitions, for example, B¯¯¯0→B− and B−→B¯¯¯0, as a function of the time difference between the two B decays. Using 468×106 BB¯¯¯ pairs produced in Υ(4S) decays collected by the BABAR detector at SLAC, we measure T-violating parameters in the time evolution of neutral B mesons, yielding ΔS+T=−1.37±0.14(stat)±0.06(syst) and ΔS−T=1.17±0.18(stat)±0.11(syst).
