    European fitness landscape for children and adolescents: updated reference values, fitness maps and country rankings based on nearly 8 million test results from 34 countries gathered by the FitBack network

    Objectives (1) To develop reference values for health-related fitness in European children and adolescents aged 6–18 years that are the foundation for the web-based, open-access and multilanguage fitness platform (FitBack); (2) to provide comparisons across European countries. Methods This study builds on a previous large fitness reference study in European youth by (1) widening the age demographic, (2) identifying the most recent and representative country-level data and (3) including national data from existing fitness surveillance and monitoring systems. We used the Assessing Levels of Physical Activity and fitness at population level (ALPHA) test battery as it comprises tests with the highest test–retest reliability, criterion/construct validity and health-related predictive validity: the 20 m shuttle run (cardiorespiratory fitness); handgrip strength and standing long jump (muscular strength); and body height, body mass, body mass index and waist circumference (anthropometry). Percentile values were obtained using the generalised additive models for location, scale and shape method. Results A total of 7 966 693 test results from 34 countries (106 datasets) were used to develop sex-specific and age-specific percentile values. In addition, country-level rankings based on mean percentiles are provided for each fitness test, as well as an overall fitness ranking. Finally, an interactive fitness platform, including individual and group reporting and European fitness maps, is provided and freely available online (www.fitbackeurope.eu)

    This cross-sectional study was designed to evaluate the self-perceived professional competences of Italian physical education (PE) teachers. For this purpose, a self-administered questionnaire has been designed to examine a broad scope of general and subject-specific competences. The participants, 484 Italian PE teachers from the north-eastern part of Italy, evaluated their professional competences on a four-level Likert scale. Factor analysis is used for the examination of the internal structure of the competence field. The results show that the self-perception of their competence profile was quite complex, consisting of 13 factors, which together explain 51.1% of the total variance. Didactic approaches, which represent the first factor and explain 31.3% of the total variance, seem to be the most informative for their estimations of how effectively they can teach their specific subject. The teachers feel insufficiently competent in some general areas, such as the use of information and communications technology, communication in foreign language, scientific research work, initiative, and entrepreneurial spirit. They do not have sufficient abilities to bring to PE the recent sports activities in which teenagers currently participate in their free time.     COVID-19 and Changes in the Model of Physical Fitness and Body Composition of Young Tennis Players

    This retrospective study aimed to estimate the differences between selected indicators of physical fitness and body composition in young tennis players during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020 and 2021) and their values as predicted using the pre-pandemic trend (2015–2019). Data were collected from selected boys (mean ± SD; 13.2 ± 1.7 years) and girls (13.1 ± 1.9 years) during annual tests. Data were analyzed with linear mixed-effects models for males and females, separately, to predict body composition and physical fitness test scores, adjusting for age and pre-pandemic trends in the data. Compared with expected values, body fat mass increased in boys (2020: 0.68; 0.44–0.92, 2021: 1.08; 0.72–1.43), whereas muscle mass decreased (2020: −0.22; −0.34–−0.10, 2021: −0.28; −0.46–−0.10) throughout the pandemic. Interestingly, boys’ age-adjusted squat jump test scores improved relative to their expected scores during COVID-19 (2020: 0.19; 0.00–0.38, 2021: 0.35; 0.06–0.63). No other differences between predicted and measured values were noted across the observation period. The results of this study suggest that the sustained reduction in sports activity caused by the pandemic may have negatively affected the body composition of athletes; however, this did not affect selected performance indicators
