    Proper period and temperature for transportation of cucumber and tomato transplants

    With an increased demand for high-quality transplants, vegetable growers have begun to purchase grafted transplants from specialized propagators. These are often shipped over long distances, but improper transport conditions can deteriorate transplant quality. To determine the appropriate period and temperature for transporting grafted transplants, we stored cucumber and tomato transplants in darkness at 6, 9, 12, 15, and 18 o C for 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 days, and subsequently cultivated these in a greenhouse for 15 days. We investigated the changes in plant height and SPAD value during storage, as well as the early growth of the stored transplants during subsequent cultivation. Increasing temperature during storage promoted stem elongation in both transplant species, with cucumber transplants showing greater stem elongation than tomato transplants. SPAD values of cucumber and tomato transplants tended to decrease with increasing storage temperature, declining even further with extended storage period. The cucumber transplants stored for 3 days and the tomato transplants stored for 6 days, showed no decrease in percent survival and no delay of growth after transplanting compared with non-stored transplants. From these results, we suggest that the appropriate temperature for transporting cucumber and tomato transplants in darkness is 6A degrees C, and the appropriate period of storage in darkness are 3 and 6 days for cucumber and tomato transplants, respectively.     Analysis of Online Home Training Users’ Behavioral Intention and Use Behavior Based on the UTAUT Model: Moderating Roles of Risk Perception toward the COVID-19 Infection and Generational Difference

    PURPOSE This study aimed (1) to analyze the behavioral intention and use behavior among the consumers of online home training contents via YouTube by employing the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT); (2) to test the moderating effects of risk perception toward the coronavirus (COVID-19) infection, and 3) to test differential impacts of generational difference across millennial and baby boom generations. METHODS A total of 400 questionnaires were distributed, and 383 samples were used for the final analysis after excluding 17 incomplete responses. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 22.0. RESULTS It was found that (1) the performance expectancy, the effort expectancy, and the social influence had positive effects on behavioral intention; (2)the facilitating condition had negative effects on the use behavior; (3) the behavioral intention had positive impact on the use behavior. Moreover, the risk perception toward the COVID-19 infection did not have moderating impacts on the UTAUT model, whereas generational differences did. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that the marketing strategy that improves exercise performance, convenience, and social influencing factors may be key to home training customers' behavioral intention and use behavior. Furthermore, home training material makers should recognize that the features and infrastructure required for the two generations are distinct and develop a separate marketing strategy for each

    Long-term prenatal stress increases susceptibility of N-methyl-D-aspartic acid-induced spasms in infant rats

    PurposeInfantile spasms, also known as West syndrome, is an age-specific epileptic seizure. Most patients with this condition also exhibit delayed development. This study aimed to determine the effect of long-term prenatal stress on susceptibility to infantile spasms.MethodsWe subjected pregnant rats to acute or chronic immobilization stress. Resulting offspring received N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (15 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) on postnatal day 15, and their behaviors were observed 75 minutes after injection. The expression of KCC2 and GAD67 was also determined using immunohistochemistry.ResultsExposure to long-term prenatal stress increased the frequency of spasms and decreased the latency to onset of spasms compared with offspring exposed to short-term prenatal stress. Expression of KCC2 and GAD67 also decreased in the group exposed to long-term prenatal stress compared with the group exposed to short-term prenatal stress.ConclusionOur study suggests that exposure to long-term prenatal stress results in increased susceptibility to seizures

    Transparent actuator made with few layer graphene electrode and dielectric elastomer, for variable focus lens

    A transparent dielectric elastomer actuator driven by few-layer-graphene (FLG) electrode was experimentally investigated. The electrodes were made of graphene, which was dispersed inN-methyl-pyrrolidone. The transparent actuator was fabricated from developed FLG electrodes.The FLG electrode with its sheet resistance of 0.45 kΩ/sq (80 nm thick) was implemented to mask silicone elastomer. The developed FLG-driven actuator exhibited an optical transparency of over 57% at a wavenumber of 600 nm and produced bending displacement performance ranging from 29 to 946 μm as functions of frequency and voltage. The focus variation was clearly demonstrated under actuation to study its application-feasibility in variable focus lens and various opto-electro-mechanical devices

    A Case of Adenocarcinoma in situ of the Distal Common Bile Duct Diagnosed by Percutaneous Transhepatic Cholangioscopy

    Extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is often clinically challenging to diagnose. Even multidisciplinary approaches which include computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiography are unsatisfactory in some cases, especially with biliary stricture. Percutaneous transhepatic cholangioscopy (PTCS) with its direct visualization for biopsy appears to be a promising technique for detecting cholangiocarcinoma at an early stage. We report a case of adenocarcinoma in situ of the distal common bile duct (CBD) that was confirmed by PTCS. This case suggests the useful role of PTCS in the differential diagnosis of a distal CBD obstruction, particularly when other diagnostic modalities do not provide definitive information

    The Breakdown of Preformed Peritoneal Advanced Glycation End Products by Intraperitoneal Alagebrium

    It has been demonstrated that inhibitors of advanced glycation end products (AGE), such as aminoguanidine, can suppress peritoneal AGE in rats on peritoneal dialysis (PD). However, it is unknown whether late administration of a putative cross-link breaker, alagebrium, could reverse peritoneal AGE. We therefore compared alagebrium with aminoguanidine in their ability to reverse peritoneal AGE in rats on PD. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: group I dialyzed with 4.25% glucose solution for all exchanges; group II dialyzed with 4.25% glucose solution containing aminoguanidine, and group III dialyzed with 4.25% glucose solution containing alagebrium for last 8 weeks of 12-week dialysis period. Dialysis exchanges were performed 2 times a day for 12 weeks. Immunohistochemistry was performed using a monoclonal anti-AGE antibody. One-hour PET was performed for comparison of transport characteristics. The immunolabelling of AGE in peritoneal membrane was markedly decreased in the alagebrium group. Consistent with this, the alagebrium group exhibited significantly higher D/Do glucose and lower D/P urea, suggesting low peritoneal membrane transport. But there were no significant differences between the control and the aminoguanidine group. These results suggest that the alagebrium may be the optimal therapeutic approach, compared with treatment with inhibitors of AGE formation, in rats on PD

    The comparison of esophageal variceal ligation plus propranolol versus propranolol alone for the primary prophylaxis of esophageal variceal bleeding

    Background/AimsTo investigate the efficacy and longterm outcome of esophageal variceal ligation (EVL) plus propranolol in comparison with propranolol alone for the primary prophylaxis of esophageal variceal bleeding.MethodsA total of 504 patients were retrospectively enrolled in this study. 330 patients were in propranolol group (Gr1) and 174 patients were in EVL plus propranolol group (Gr2). The endpoints of this study were esophageal variceal bleeding and mortality. Association analyses were performed to evaluate bleeding and mortality between Gr1 and Gr2.ResultsEVL was more applied in patients with high risk, such as large-sized varices (F2 or F3) or positive red color signs. Total 38 patients had bleeds, 32 in Gr1 and 6 in Gr2. The cumulative probability of bleeding at 120 months was 13% in Gr1 versus 4% in Gr2 (P=0.04). The predictive factors of variceal bleeding were red color signs (OR 2.962, P=0.007) and the method of propranolol plus EVL (OR 0.160, P=0.000). 20 patients died in Gr1 and 12 in Gr2. Mortality rates are similar in the two groups compared, 6.7% in Gr1 and 6.9% in Gr2. The cumulative probability of mortality at 120 months was not significantly different in the two groups (7% in Gr1, 12% in Gr2, P=0.798). The prognostic factors for mortality were age over 50 (OR 5.496, P=0.002), Child-Pugh class B (OR 3.979, P=0.001), and Child-Pugh class C (OR 10.861, P=0.000).ConclusionsEVL plus propranolol is more effective than propranolol alone in the prevention of the first variceal bleeding in patients with liver cirrhosis

    Expression of EGFR and Microvessel Density in Middle Ear Cholesteatoma

    Objectives. Cholesteatoma destructs bony tissue by the interactions between hyperproliferative epithelial cells and subepithelial inflammatory cells. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and microvessel density (MVD) in middle ear cholesteatoma tissue in an effort to determine the relationship between expression of EGFR and neovascularization.Methods. We evaluated the expression of EGFR and MVD by immunohistochemical staining for CD31 and Factor VIII in 32 cholesteatoma tissue samples and 7 normal postauricular skin samples. We also analyzed the correlation between EGFR expression and MVD.Results. The expression of EGFR was higher in cholesteatoma than in postauricular skin, but the difference was not statistically significant. EGFR was more highly expressed in the suprabasal layer than in the basal layer. Using CD31 and Factor VIII, we analyzed the MVD and found that it was significantly higher in cholesteatoma than in postauricular skin, and significantly correlated with the expression of EGFR.Conclusion. Our results suggest that overexpression of EGFR and neovascularization are correlated with the growth of cholesteatoma

    Expression and Regulation of Latent TGF-β Binding Protein-1 Transcripts and Their Splice Variants in Human Glomerular Endothelial Cells

    Latent transforming growth factor (TGF)-β-binding protein (LTBP) is required for the assembly, secretion, matrix association, and activation of latent TGF-β complex. To elucidate the cell specific expression of the genes of LTBP-1 and their splice variants and the factors that regulate the gene expression, we cultured primary human glomerular endothelial cells (HGEC) under different conditions. Basal expression of LTBP-1 mRNA was suppressed in HGEC compared to WI-38 human embryonic lung fibroblasts. High glucose, H2O2, and TGF-β1 upregulated and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) further downregulated LTBP-1 mRNA in HGEC. RT-PCR with a primer set for LTBP-1S produced many clones but no clone was gained with a primer set for LTBP-1L. Of 12 clones selected randomly, Sca I mapping and DNA sequencing revealed that only one was LTBP-1S and all the others were LTBP-1SΔ53. TGF-β1, but not high glucose, H2O2 or VEGF, tended to increase LTBP-1SΔ53 mRNA. In conclusion, HGEC express LTBP-1 mRNA which is suppressed at basal state but upregulated by high glucose, H2O2, and TGF-β1 and downregulated by VEGF. Major splice variant of LTBP-1 in HGEC was LTBP-1SΔ53. Modification of LTBP-1SΔ53 gene in HGEC may abrogate fibrotic action of TGF-β1 but this requires confirmation

    The Role of Laryngopharyngeal Reflux as a Risk Factor in Laryngeal Cancer: A Preliminary Report

    Objectives. To evaluate the significance of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) as a risk factor in laryngeal cancer.Methods. We performed a case-control study with 29 consecutive laryngeal cancer patients who had undergone 24-hour ambulatory double pH monitoring from 2003 to 2006. The control group included 300 patients who had undergone 24-hour ambulatory double pH monitoring due to LPR-related symptoms. We analyzed the prevalence of LPR and numerous parameters from the 24-hour ambulatory double pH monitoring in the laryngeal cancer patient and control groups. Pathologic LPR is defined when more than three episodes of LPR occur in 24 hours.Results. The prevalence of pathologic LPR was significantly higher in the laryngeal cancer group than the control group (P=0.049). The reflux number of the upper probe was significantly higher in the laryngeal cancer group (P<0.001). However the effects of pathologic LPR on laryngeal cancer risk were diluted after adjusting for smoking and alcohol consumption in the multivariable logistic regression.Conclusion. The pathologic LPR might be a possible risk factor in the development of laryngeal cancer. A further study should be necessary to verify the exact role of LPR in laryngeal cancer
