Tendencias en el desarrollo temporal del mal del ciprés en parcelas permanentes de una reserva forestal nacional de Austrocedrus chilensis (Patagonia, Argentina)
Longevity is a characteristic of forest trees that influences their responses to challenges by biotic and abiotic stresses and the temporal development of symptoms. Monitoring programs have been extensively used to detect the impact of climatic change, air pollution and outbreaks of pathogens on forest health, growth and dynamics. In Argentina, forests of Patagonian cypress are affected since mid twenty century by a mortality process called «mal del ciprés» (cypress mortality), but information about their temporal progression is scarce. In the present work we used a database from a program of dasometric permanent plots to analyse the temporal development of cypress mortality on plot and tree level, and determine qualitatively the spatial distribution of affected trees. Particular pulses of appearance of affected trees shared by all plots, rapid or slow progress of mortality at tree level and a homogeneous distribution of affected trees without a clear pattern of expansion from a central point were determined. The results indicate that the episodic appearance of affected trees can be related with warm and dry climatic periods and suggest that the individuals affected by cypress mortality share some special characteristics such as genetic background, developmental conditions or physiological mechanisms for drought responses.

Implications of a comparison of the stratigraphy and depositional environments of the Argana (Morocco) and Fundy (Nova Scotia, Canada) Permian-Jurassic basins
The Argana rift basin of Morocco and the Fundy rift basin of the Maritime Provinces of Eastern Canada are on the conjugate margins of the central Atlantic Ocean. In the Late Triassic and Early Jurassic these basins lie at similar paleolatitudes within the same great rift system. A comparison of the depositional- and tectono-stratigraphy reveal strong similarities, much greater that those shared between the Fundy basin and other rifts in eastern North America. Both the Argana and Fundy basins are comprised of four, mostly unconformity-bound, tectonostratigraphic sequences (TS I-IV) probably controlled by pulses of extension: TS I, is Permian in age and the depositional facies of the Argana basin looks more humid than the age equivalent in the Fundy basin and the latter may not be a rift sequence; TS II, is early Late Triassic (Carnian) in age and is the most humid looking facies in both basins; TS III, is late Late Triassic (Norian and Rhaetian) in age and is much more arid in both basins with abundant aeolianites and evaporites; TS IV, is latest Triassic and earliest Jurassic (late Rhaetian - early Hettangian) and shows an increase in the range of variability in climate-sensitive facies - its basal part contains the Triassic-Jurassic boundary an overlying basalt flow sequence and additional fluvial and lacustrine strata on top. The dramatic similarity in both facies and sequence stratigraphy between the Argana and Fundy basins, at least during the Triassic, argues for similar tectonic control, restricted to that latitudinal swath of Pangea, as well as similar paleoclimate
Opening the black box of outer space: the case of Jason-3
If you look at a rendering of planet Earth from a bird's eye view, you will see satellites orbiting the planet like electrons, each one a testament to humanity's expansion beyond Earth's atmosphere. It begs the question: what is this new humanized landscape? The dominant voice that has attempted to answer this question is the realist one, which has led the charge of academic inquiry into outer space since the fateful launch of the Sputnik in 1957. Though enlightening in some respects, the realist perspective oftentimes obscures the heterogeneous complexity of the actors, actions, limits and possibilities that have constructed this very humanized outer space. This paper looks at the humanization of outer space through the lens of JASON-3, an internationally collaborative satellite designed primarily to measure the topography of the Earth's oceans. A vast number of actors collaborated to enact the network that created JASON-3, including bureaucratic agencies, academics, private contractors, political bodies, other satellites, the sun and even gravity. This paper will focus on these actors and the work that they did to form the network, showing a glimpse of the entangled connections that eventually produced JASON-3. Through telling this story, I argue: (1) outer space is more complex than state-level relations and (2) critical geography -- with its insight into relational spaces and deconstructing power structures -- has a unique place to fill in outer space literature
Experimental Parameters for a Cerium 144 Based Intense Electron Antineutrino Generator Experiment at Very Short Baselines
The standard three-neutrino oscillation paradigm, associated with small
squared mass splittings , has been successfully built
up over the last 15 years using solar, atmospheric, long baseline accelerator
and reactor neutrino experiments. However, this well-established picture might
suffer from anomalous results reported at very short baselines in some of these
experiments. If not experimental artifacts, such results could possibly be
interpreted as the existence of at least an additional fourth sterile neutrino
species, mixing with the known active flavors with an associated mass splitting
, and being insensitive to standard weak interactions.
Precision measurements at very short baselines (5 to 15 m) with intense MeV
electronic antineutrino emitters can be used to probe these anomalies. In this
article, the expected antineutrino signal and backgrounds of a generic
experiment which consists of deploying an intense beta minus radioactive source
inside or in the vicinity of a large liquid scintillator detector are studied.
The technical challenges to perform such an experiment are identified, along
with quantifying the possible source and detector induced systematics, and
their impact on the sensitivity to the observation of neutrino oscillations at
short baselines.Comment: 21 pages, 27 figures, generated with pdflatex, accepted for

Caterpillars and fungal pathogens: two co-occurring parasites of an ant-plant mutualism
In mutualisms, each interacting species obtains resources from its partner that it would obtain less efficiently if alone, and so derives a net fitness benefit. In exchange for shelter (domatia) and food, mutualistic plant-ants protect their host myrmecophytes from herbivores, encroaching vines and fungal pathogens. Although selective filters enable myrmecophytes to host those ant species most favorable to their fitness, some insects can by-pass these filters, exploiting the rewards supplied whilst providing nothing in return. This is the case in French Guiana for Cecropia obtusa (Cecropiaceae) as Pseudocabima guianalis caterpillars (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae) can colonize saplings before the installation of their mutualistic Azteca ants. The caterpillars shelter in the domatia and feed on food bodies (FBs) whose production increases as a result. They delay colonization by ants by weaving a silk shield above the youngest trichilium, where the FBs are produced, blocking access to them. This probable temporal priority effect also allows female moths to lay new eggs on trees that already shelter caterpillars, and so to occupy the niche longer and exploit Cecropia resources before colonization by ants. However, once incipient ant colonies are able to develop, they prevent further colonization by the caterpillars. Although no higher herbivory rates were noted, these caterpillars are ineffective in protecting their host trees from a pathogenic fungus, Fusarium moniliforme (Deuteromycetes), that develops on the trichilium in the absence of mutualistic ants. Therefore, the Cecropia treelets can be parasitized by two often overlooked species: the caterpillars that shelter in the domatia and feed on FBs, delaying colonization by mutualistic ants, and the fungal pathogen that develops on old trichilia. The cost of greater FB production plus the presence of the pathogenic fungus likely affect tree growth
Online Monitoring of the Osiris Reactor with the Nucifer Neutrino Detector
Originally designed as a new nuclear reactor monitoring device, the Nucifer
detector has successfully detected its first neutrinos. We provide the second
shortest baseline measurement of the reactor neutrino flux. The detection of
electron antineutrinos emitted in the decay chains of the fission products,
combined with reactor core simulations, provides an new tool to assess both the
thermal power and the fissile content of the whole nuclear core and could be
used by the Inter- national Agency for Atomic Energy (IAEA) to enhance the
Safeguards of civil nuclear reactors. Deployed at only 7.2m away from the
compact Osiris research reactor core (70MW) operating at the Saclay research
centre of the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA),
the experiment also exhibits a well-suited configuration to search for a new
short baseline oscillation. We report the first results of the Nucifer
experiment, describing the performances of the 0.85m3 detector remotely
operating at a shallow depth equivalent to 12m of water and under intense
background radiation conditions. Based on 145 (106) days of data with reactor
ON (OFF), leading to the detection of an estimated 40760 electron
antineutrinos, the mean number of detected antineutrinos is 281 +- 7(stat) +-
18(syst) electron antineutrinos/day, in agreement with the prediction 277(23)
electron antineutrinos/day. Due the the large background no conclusive results
on the existence of light sterile neutrinos could be derived, however. As a
first societal application we quantify how antineutrinos could be used for the
Plutonium Management and Disposition Agreement.Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures - Version
Families of superintegrable Hamiltonians constructed from exceptional polynomials
We introduce a family of exactly-solvable two-dimensional Hamiltonians whose
wave functions are given in terms of Laguerre and exceptional Jacobi
polynomials. The Hamiltonians contain purely quantum terms which vanish in the
classical limit leaving only a previously known family of superintegrable
systems. Additional, higher-order integrals of motion are constructed from
ladder operators for the considered orthogonal polynomials proving the quantum
system to be superintegrable
