Ils permettent destimer lĂąge de leau, cest Ă  dire le temps depuis lequelleau a quittĂ© le contact de latmosphĂšre, ou la zone non saturĂ©e du sol. La mĂ©thode permetde dater des eaux de 1950 Ă  nos jours. Les concentrations mesurĂ©es sont de lordre de lapicomole par litre deau et du pptv dans lair (partie par trillion de volume). Les techniques deprĂ©lĂšvement, dĂ©chantillonnage et de conservation ont Ă©tĂ© validĂ©es afin de ne pas contaminerles Ă©chantillons. La mĂ©thode dĂ©veloppĂ©e permet datteindre des limites de dĂ©tection de lordrede 0,01 picomole par litre deau (0,01*10-12 mole/L) pour le CFC-12.     International audienceAnti-infective drugs stock-outs are increasingly frequent, and this is unlikely to change. There are numerous causes for this, mostly related to parameters difficult to control: i) 60 to 80% of raw material or components are produced outside of Europe (compared to 20% 30 years ago), with subsequent loss of independence for their procurement; ii) the economic crisis drives the pharmaceutical companies to stop producing drugs of limited profitability (even among important drugs); iii) the enforcement of regulatory requirements and quality control procedures result in an increasing number of drugs being blocked during production. The therapeutic class most affected by drug stock-outs is that of anti-infective drugs, especially injectable ones, and many therapeutic dead ends have recently occurred. We provide an update on this issue, and suggest 2 major actions for improvement: i) to implement a group dedicated to anticipating drug stock-outs within the anti-infective committee in each health care center, with the objectives of organizing and coordinating the response whenever a drug stock-out is deemed at risk (i.e., contingency plans, substitution, communication to prescribers); ii) a national reflection lead by scientific societies, in collaboration with government agencies, upstream of the most problematic drug stock-outs, to elaborate and disseminate consensus guidelines for the management of these stock-outs

    Key Parameters Requirements for Non‐Fullerene‐Based Organic Solar Cells with Power Conversion Efficiency >20%

    The reported power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of nonfullerene acceptor (NFA) based organic photovoltaics (OPVs) now exceed 14% and 17% for single‐junction and two‐terminal tandem cells, respectively. However, increasing the PCE further requires an improved understanding of the factors limiting the device efficiency. Here, the efficiency limits of single‐junction and two‐terminal tandem NFA‐based OPV cells are examined with the aid of a numerical device simulator that takes into account the optical properties of the active material(s), charge recombination effects, and the hole and electron mobilities in the active layer of the device. The simulations reveal that single‐junction NFA OPVs can potentially reach PCE values in excess of 18% with mobility values readily achievable in existing material systems. Furthermore, it is found that balanced electron and hole mobilities of >10−3 cm2 V−1 s−1 in combination with low nongeminate recombination rate constants of 10−12 cm3 s−1 could lead to PCE values in excess of 20% and 25% for single‐junction and two‐terminal tandem OPV cells, respectively. This analysis provides the first tangible description of the practical performance targets and useful design rules for single‐junction and tandem OPVs based on NFA materials, emphasizing the need for developing new material systems that combine these desired characteristics

    Caribou herd dynamics : impacts of climate change on traditional and sport harvesting

    Caribou (Rangifer tarandus) are a key species in Arctic ecosystems including northern Québec and Labrador. They play a central role in the ecology of predators and the structure of Arctic plant communities. In addition, caribou provide socioeconomic and cultural benefits from subsistence and sport hunting activities. Changes in the distribution and abundance of caribou due to global climate change would have serious biological, societal, and economic implications. Direct and indirect consequences of climate change on migratory caribou herds may include alteration in habitat use, migration patterns, foraging behaviour and demography. For example, caribou may experience a further northerly shift in distribution due to several factors including longer ice-free periods, increases in snowfall and extreme weather events, alterations in the fire regime, and changes in the distribution of insects and predators. Future research by Caribou Ungava, a research group interested in the ecology of migratory caribou in the context of climate change, will address the factors outlining variations in the population dynamics of caribou, implications for survival and reproduction, as well as the response of caribou habitat to different climate change scenarios. Management efforts focusing on mitigating greenhouse gases to reduce the potential effects of climate change, preserving high quality habitat, limiting anthropogenic landscape disturbances, and managing hunting in a sustainable manner, could alleviate stressors on migratory caribou of the QuébecLabrador peninsula

    Design of a lattice-matched III-V-N/Si photovoltaic tandem cell monolithically integrated on silicon substrate

    International audienceIn this paper, we present a comprehensive study of high efficiencies tandem solar cells monolithically grown on a silicon substrate using GaAsPN absorber layer. InGaAs(N) quantum dots and GaAsPN quantum wells have been grown recently on GaP/Si susbstrate for applications related to light emission. For photovoltaic applications, we consider the GaAsPN diluted nitride alloy as the top junction material due to both its perfect lattice matching with Si and ideal bandgap energy for current generation in association with the Si bottom cell. Numerical simulation of the top cell is performed. The effect of layer thicknesses and doping on the cell efficiency are evidenced. In these structures a tunnel junction (TJ) is needed to interconnect both the top and bottom sub-cells. We compare the simulated performances of different TJ structures and show that the GaP(n+)/Si(p+) TJ is promising to improve performances of the current-voltage characteristic

    Pharmacogenetic assessment of toxicity and outcome in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer treated with LV5FU2, FOLFOX, and FOLFIRI: FFCD 2000-05

    L’objectif de ce travail Ă©tait la recherche de biomarqueurs molĂ©culaires prĂ©dictifs de la tolĂ©rance et de l’efficacitĂ© des chimio– thĂ©rapies utilisĂ©es dans le colorectal (CCR) mĂ©tastatique. Nous avons effectuĂ© le gĂ©notypage de 20 polymorphismes prĂ©sents au sein de 9 gĂšnes connus ou suspectĂ©s d’ĂȘtre impliquĂ©s dans la voie du 5FU, de l’oxaliplatine, ou de l’irinotĂ©can, Ă  partir de l’ADN extrait du sang de 346 patients traitĂ©s dans le cadre d’un essai de phase III. Cet essai comparait une chimiothĂ©rapie sĂ©quentielle par 5FU (schĂ©ma LV5FU2) suivie d’une association 5FU plus oxali– platine (schĂ©ma FOLFOX) Ă  une chimiothĂ©rapie combinĂ©e de type FOLFOX d’emblĂ©e en premiĂšre ligne de traitement. Nous avons trouvĂ© un risque de toxicitĂ© hĂ©matologique sĂ©vĂšre sous FOLFOX significativement augmentĂ© chez les patients porteurs de l’allĂšle ERCC2-K751QC. La prĂ©sence de l’allĂšle TS-5’UTR3RG du gĂšne de la thymidylate synthase Ă©tait associĂ©e Ă  un taux de rĂ©ponse significativement plus Ă©levĂ© sous LV5FU2. Le taux de rĂ©ponse au FOLFOX en 2e ligne Ă©tait significativement supĂ©rieur chez les patients porteurs de l’allĂšle ERCC1-IVS3+74G, et chez ceux ayant au moins un allĂšle de GSTT1 prĂ©sent. L’analyse prĂ©dictive a montrĂ© un effet dĂ©pendant du traitement de certains polymorphismes. En effet, une survie sans progression significativement allongĂ©e par l’ajout de l’oxaliplatine en 1re ligne a Ă©tĂ© observĂ©e uniquement chez les patients ayant un gĂ©notype TS-5’UTR2R/2R ou 2R/3R, suggĂ©rant l’absence de bĂ©nĂ©fice d’une bithĂ©rapie par FOLFOX d’emblĂ©e en premiĂšre ligne chez les patients TS-5’UTR3R/3R. Ces rĂ©sultats montrent que l’étude des polymorphismes constitutionnels permettent de prĂ©dire non seulement la toxicitĂ© mais aussi l’efficacitĂ© des chimiothĂ©rapies antitumorales du cancer colorectal, et ainsi (sous rĂ©serve d’une validation sur une population indĂ©pendante) d’orienter la stratĂ©gie thĂ©rapeutique Ă  l’échelle de l’individu

    San Francisco, California, United StatesInternational audienceLattice-matched GaP-based nanostructures grown on silicon substrates is a highly rewarded route for coherent integration of photonics and high-efficiency photovoltaic devices onto silicon substrates. We report on the structural and optical properties of selected MBE-grown nanostructures on both GaP substrates and GaP/Si pseudo-substrates. As a first stumbling block, the GaP/Si interface growth has been optimised thanks to a complementary set of thorough structural analyses. Photoluminescence and time-resolved photoluminescence studies of self-assembled (In,Ga)As quantum dots grown on GaP substrate demonstrate a proximity of two different types of optical transitions interpreted as a competition between conduction band states in X and Γ valleys. Structural properties and optical studies of GaAsP(N)/GaP(N) quantum wells coherently grown on GaP substrates and GaP/Si pseudo substrates are reported. Our results are found to be suitable for light emission applications in the datacom segment. Then, possible routes are drawn for larger wavelengths applications, in order to address the chip-to-chip and within-a-chip optical interconnects and the optical telecom segments.     Genome wide SNP comparative analysis between EGFR and KRAS mutated NSCLC and characterization of two models of oncogenic cooperation in non-small cell lung carcinoma

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Lung cancer with EGFR mutation was shown to be a specific clinical entity. In order to better understand the biology behind this disease we used a genome wide characterization of loss of heterozygosity and amplification by Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) Array analysis to point out chromosome segments linked to <it>EGFR </it>mutations. To do so, we compared genetic profiles between <it>EGFR </it>mutated adenocarcinomas (ADC) and <it>KRAS </it>mutated ADC from 24 women with localized lung cancer.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Patterns of alterations were different between <it>EGFR </it>and <it>KRAS </it>mutated tumors and specific chromosomes alterations were linked to the <it>EGFR </it>mutated group. Indeed chromosome regions 14q21.3 (p = 0.027), 7p21.3-p21.2 (p = 0.032), 7p21.3 (p = 0.042) and 7p21.2-7p15.3 (p = 0.043) were found significantly amplified in EGFR mutated tumors. Within those regions 3 genes are of special interest <it>ITGB8</it>, <it>HDAC9 </it>and <it>TWIST1</it>. Moreover, homozygous deletions at <it>CDKN2A </it>and LOH at <it>RB1 </it>were identified in <it>EGFR </it>mutated tumors. We therefore tested the existence of a link between EGFR mutation, CDKN2A homozygous deletion and cyclin amplification in a larger series of tumors. Indeed, in a series of non-small-cell lung carcinoma (n = 98) we showed that homozygous deletions at <it>CDKN2A </it>were linked to <it>EGFR </it>mutations and absence of smoking whereas cyclin amplifications (<it>CCNE1 </it>and <it>CCND1</it>) were associated to <it>TP53 </it>mutations and smoking habit.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>All together, our results show that genome wide patterns of alteration differ between <it>EGFR </it>and <it>KRAS </it>mutated lung ADC, describe two models of oncogenic cooperation involving either <it>EGFR </it>mutation and <it>CDKN2A </it>deletion or cyclin amplification and <it>TP53 </it>inactivating mutations and identified new chromosome regions at 7p and 14q associated to EGFR mutations in lung cancer.</p

    Genetic polymorphisms of MMP1, MMP3 and MMP7 gene promoter and risk of colorectal adenoma

    BACKGROUND: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) have been shown to play a role in colorectal cancer (CRC). More recently, MMP1, MMP3 and MMP7 functional gene promoter polymorphisms have been found to be associated with CRC occurrence and prognosis. To document the role of MMP polymorphisms in the early step of colorectal carcinogenesis, we investigated their association with colorectal adenoma risk in a case-control study comprising 295 patients with large adenomas (LA), 302 patients with small adenomas (SA) and 568 polyp-free (PF) controls. METHODS: Patients were genotyped using automated fragment analysis for MMP1 -1607 ins/del G and MMP3 -1612 ins/delA (MMP3.1) polymorphisms and allelic discrimination assay for MMP3 -709 A/G (MMP3.2) and MMP7 -181 A/G polymorphisms. Association between MMP genotypes and colorectal adenomas was first tested for each polymorphism separately and then for combined genotypes using the combination test. Adjustment on relevant variables and estimation of odds ratios were performed using unconditional logistic regression. RESULTS: No association was observed between the polymorphisms and LA when compared to PF or SA. When comparing SA to PF controls, analysis revealed a significant association between MMP3 -1612 ins/delA polymorphism and SA with an increased risk associated with the 6A/6A genotype (OR = 1.67, 95%CI: 1.20–2.34). Using the combination test, the best association was found for MMP3.1-MMP1 (p = 0.001) with an OR of 1.88 (95%CI: 1.08–3.28) for the combined genotype 2G/2G-6A/6A estimated by logistic regression. CONCLUSION: These data show a relation between MMP1 -1607 ins/del G and MMP3 -1612 ins/delA combined polymorphisms and risk of SA, suggesting their potential role in the early steps of colorectal carcinogenesis
