    Optimal Design of Silicon-based Chips for Piezo-induced Ultrasound Resonances in Embedded Microchannels

    AbstractWe present a variational formulation of the governing equations and introduce global indicators to describe the behavior of acoustofluidic devices driven at resonance frequencies by means of a piezoelectric transducer. The individuation of the correct Lagrangian densities for the different parts constituting the device (the piezo transducer, the silicon walls, the fluid-filled microchannel, and the glass lid) allows for the introduction of the weak formulation used in the finite element discretization of the equations describing the system in its oscillatory regime. Additionally, the knowledge of the Lagrangian density leads to the derivation of the correct structure of the Hamiltonian density, i.e. the energy density, which is important for the quantification of the energy content of the whole system and its individual parts. Specifically, the energy content of the embedded microchannel is quantified by means of the acoustofluidic yield η defined as the ratio between the energy in the channel and the total energy. From the standpoint of acoustophoretic application, the introduction of the acoustophoretic mean orientation allows us to identify the frequencies for which an acoustophoretic effect, i.e. the lateral motion of particle dragged by the axial main flow, is particularly strong. Finally, the connection between the mechanical and electrical degrees of freedom of the system is addressed. This is important for proper determination of the dissipated power, and it may lead to the detection of resonance states by means of purely electrical measurements.     Near- to mid-infrared picosecond optical parametric oscillator based on periodically poled RbTiOAsO4

    We describe a Ti:sapphire-pumped picosecond optical parametric oscillator based on periodically poled RbTiOAsO4 that is broadly tunable in the near to mid infrared. A 4.5-mm single-grating crystal at room temperature in combination with pump wavelength tuning provided access to a continuous-tuning range from 3.35 to 5 mu m, and a pump power threshold of 90 mW was measured. Average mid-infrared output powers in excess of 100 mW and total output powers of 400 mW in similar to 1-ps pulses were obtained at 33% extraction efficiency. (C) 1998 Optical Society of America.</p

    A cellular-resolution atlas of the larval zebrafish brain

    Understanding brain-wide neuronal dynamics requires a detailed map of the underlying circuit architecture. We built an interactive cellular-resolution atlas of the zebrafish brain at 6 days post-fertilization (dpf) based on the reconstructions of over 2,000 individually GFP-labeled neurons. We clustered our dataset in "morphotypes,'' establishing a unique database of quantitatively described neuronal morphologies together with their spatial coordinates in vivo. Over 100 transgene expression patterns were imaged separately and co-registered with the single-neuron atlas. By annotating 72 non-overlapping brain regions, we generated from our dataset an inter-areal wiring diagram of the larval brain, which serves as ground truth for synapse-scale, electron microscopic reconstructions. Interrogating our atlas by "virtual tract tracing'' has already revealed previously unknown wiring principles in the tectum and the cerebellum. In conclusion, we present here an evolving computational resource and visualization tool, which will be essential to map function to structure in a vertebrate brain

    THE FREQUENCIES OF HAPTOGLOBIN TYPES IN FIVE POPULATIONS *

    Haptoglobin types have been determined by starch gel electrophoresis of blood from five populations. The gene frequencies obtained for allele Hp 1 were as follows: American whites, 043; American Negroes, 0.59; African Negroes, 0.72; Apaches, 0.59; and Asiatic Indians, 0.18. In tribes of the Ivory Coast and Liberia, there was a suggestion of a cline which parallels that for haemoglobin S. Evidence is presented that the condition of ahaptoglobinemia is under genetic control but not by a gene allelic to the Hp 1 -Hp 2 series. The importance of the ahaptoglobinemic individuals for genetic studies and the possibility of selection in the maintenance of the genetic polymorphism are discussed.     High-voltage Sensor Based on Fiber Bragg Grating in Fibers with Electrodes

    Vitamin D in Head and Neck Cancer : a Systematic Review

    Purpose of review Observational studies have shown that serum 25-OH vitamin D [25(OH)D] is inversely associated with overall cancer risk in many malignancies. We performed a systematic literature review to determine whether vitamin D deficiency is related to head and neck cancer (HNC) etiology and outcome. Recent findings The search yielded five prospective studies reporting 25(OH)D levels prior to cancer diagnosis and their effect on the risk of HNC. Eight studies were cross-sectional or case-control studies, in which 25(OH)D levels were only measured after cancer diagnosis. Two studies found an inverse association between 25(OH)D level and HNC risk, while two other prospective cohort studies demonstrated no connection between 25(OH)D and HNC risk. Several studies reported cancer patients to have significantly lower 25(OH)D levels than controls. Associations between 25(OH)D and prognosis and mortality were variable. The link between vitamin D and HNC has so far only been investigated in a few observational, prospective, and case-control studies. Vitamin D deficiency may be more common in HNC patients than in the healthy population. There is no evidence for a causal relationship. Further studies are needed to evaluate whether low 25(OH)D concentrations play a role in the development or outcome of HNCs.Peer reviewe
