    Measuring the slopes of mass profiles for dwarf spheroidals in triaxial CDM potentials

    We generate stellar distribution functions (DFs) in triaxial haloes in order to examine the reliability of slopes Γ≡ΔlogM/Δlogr\Gamma\equiv \Delta {\rm log} M / \Delta {\rm log} r inferred by applying mass estimators of the form M∝Reσ2M\propto R_e\sigma^2 (i.e. assuming spherical symmetry, where ReR_e and σ\sigma are luminous effective radius and global velocity dispersion, respectively) to two stellar sub-populations independently tracing the same gravitational potential. The DFs take the form f(E)f(E), are dynamically stable, and are generated within triaxial potentials corresponding directly to subhaloes formed in cosmological dark-matter-only simulations of Milky Way and galaxy cluster haloes. Additionally, we consider the effect of different tracer number density profiles (cuspy and cored) on the inferred slopes of mass profiles. For the isotropic DFs considered here, we find that halo triaxiality tends to introduce an anti-correlation between ReR_e and σ\sigma when estimated for a variety of viewing angles. The net effect is a negligible contribution to the systematic error associated with the slope of the mass profile, which continues to be dominated by a bias toward greater overestimation of masses for more-concentrated tracer populations. We demonstrate that simple mass estimates for two distinct tracer populations can give reliable (and cosmologically meaningful) lower limits for Γ\Gamma, irrespective of the degree of triaxiality or shape of the tracer number density profile.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to MNRA

    A peculiar galaxy appears at redshift 11: properties of a moderate redshift interloper

    Laporte et al. (2011) reported a very high redshift galaxy candidate: a lensed J-band dropout (A2667-J1). J1 has a photometric redshift of z=9.6-12, the probability density function for which permits no low or intermediate z solution. We here report new spectroscopic observations of this galaxy with VLT/XShooter, which show clear [OIII]5007AA, Ly-alpha, H-alpha, and H-beta emission and place the galaxy firmly at z=2.082. The oxygen lines contribute only ~25% to the H-band flux, and do not significantly affect the dropout selection of J1. After correcting the broadband fluxes for line emission, we identify two roughly equally plausible natures for A2667-J1: either it is young heavily reddened starburst, or a maximally old system with a very pronounced 4000AA break, upon which a minor secondary burst of star formation is superimposed. Fits show that to make a 3 sigma detection of this object in the B-band (V-band), imaging of depth AB=30.2 (29.5) would be required - despite the relatively bright NIR magnitude, we would need optical data of equivalent depth to the Hubble Ultra Deep Field to rule out the mid-z solution on purely photometric grounds. Assuming that this stellar population can be scaled to the NIR magnitudes of recent HST/WFC3 IR-selected galaxies, we conclude that infeasibly deep optical data AB~32 would be required for the same level of security. There is a population of galaxies at z~2 with continuum colours alone that mimic those of our z=7-12 candidates.Comment: Accepted by Monthly Notices. 5 pages, 2 figure

    The Prince and the Pauper: Evidence for the early high-redshift formation of the Galactic α\alpha-poor disc population

    Context. The presence of [α\alpha/Fe]-[Fe/H] bi-modality in the Milky Way disc has animated the Galactic archaeology community since more than two decades. Aims. Our goal is to investigate the chemical, temporal, and kinematical structure of the Galactic discs using abundances, kinematics, and ages derived self-consistently with the new Bayesian framework SAPP. Methods. We employ the public Gaia-ESO spectra, as well as Gaia EDR3 astrometry and photometry. Stellar parameters and chemical abundances are determined for 13 426 stars using NLTE models of synthetic spectra. Ages are derived for a sub-sample of 2 898 stars, including subgiants and main-sequence stars. The sample probes a large range of Galactocentric radii, ∌\sim 3 to 12 kpc, and extends out of the disc plane to ±\pm 2 kpc. Results. Our new data confirm the known bi-modality in the [Fe/H] - [α\alpha/Fe] space, which is often viewed as the manifestation of the chemical thin and thick discs. The over-densities significantly overlap in metallicity, age, and kinematics, and none of these is a sufficient criterion for distinguishing between the two disc populations. Different from previous studies, we find that the α\alpha-poor disc population has a very extended [Fe/H] distribution and contains ∌\sim 20%\% old stars with ages of up to ∌\sim 11 Gyr. Conclusions. Our results suggest that the Galactic thin disc was in place early, at look-back times corresponding to redshifts z ∌\sim 2 or more. At ages ∌\sim 9 to 11 Gyr, the two disc structures shared a period of co-evolution. Our data can be understood within the clumpy disc formation scenario that does not require a pre-existing thick disc to initiate a formation of the thin disc.     Use of the Behavior Assessment Tool in 18 Pilot Residency Programs

    Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility and evaluate the effectiveness of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery Behavior Tool (ABOSBT) for measuring professionalism. Methods: Through collaboration between the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and American Orthopaedic Association\u27s Council of Residency Directors, 18 residency programs piloted the use of the ABOSBT. Residents requested assessments from faculty at the end of their clinical rotations, and a 360° request was performed near the end of the academic year. Program Directors (PDs) rated individual resident professionalism (based on historical observation) at the outset of the study, for comparison to the ABOSBT results. Results: Nine thousand eight hundred ninety-two evaluations were completed using the ABOSBT for 449 different residents by 1,012 evaluators. 97.6% of all evaluations were scored level 4 or 5 (high levels of professional behavior) across all of the 5 domains. In total, 2.4% of all evaluations scored level 3 or below reflecting poorer performance. Of 431 residents, the ABOSBT identified 26 of 32 residents who were low performers (2 or more \u3c level 3 scores in a domain) and who also scored below expectations by the PD at the start of the pilot project (81% sensitivity and 57% specificity), including 13 of these residents scoring poorly in all 5 domains. Evaluators found the ABOSBT was easy to use (96%) and that it was an effective tool to assess resident professional behavior (81%).     The impact of two massive early accretion events in a Milky Way-like galaxy: repercussions for the buildup of the stellar disc and halo

    We identify and characterize a Milky Way-like realization from the Auriga simulations with two consecutive massive mergers ∌2  Gyr apart at high redshift, comparable to the reported Kraken and Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus. The Kraken-like merger (z = 1.6, MTot=8×1010M⊙ ⁠) is gas-rich, deposits most of its mass in the inner 10  kpc, and is largely isotropic. The Sausage-like merger (z = 1.14, MTot=1×1011M⊙ ⁠) leaves a more extended mass distribution at higher energies, and has a radially anisotropic distribution. For the higher-redshift merger, the stellar mass ratio of the satellite to host galaxy is high (1:3). As a result, the chemistry of the remnant is indistinguishable from contemporaneous in situ populations, making it challenging to identify through chemical abundances. This naturally explains why all abundance patterns attributed so far to Kraken are in fact fully consistent with the metal-poor in situ so-called Aurora population and thick disc. However, our model makes a falsifiable prediction: if the Milky Way underwent a gas-rich double merger at high redshift, then this should be imprinted on its star formation history with bursts about ∌2  s apart. This may offer constraining power on the highest-redshift massive mergers

    Exploring the diversity and similarity of radially anisotropic Milky Way-like stellar haloes: Implications for disrupted dwarf galaxy searches

    We investigate the properties of mergers comparable to the Gaia–Sausage–Enceladus (GSE) using cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of Milky Way-like galaxies. The merger progenitors span an order of magnitude in their peak stellar mass (⁠3×108106M⊙ ⁠), but most of these do not follow the merger to low orbital energies. Between 0 and 1 of these satellites may survive to z = 0, but with no clear signatures of their past association. We show that the fraction of stars originating from GSE-like mergers is reduced for lower metallicities (reaching a minimum around [Fe/H] = −2), and also within 5 kpc of the Galactic Centre. Whilst these central regions are dominated by in-situ stars, the ex-situ fraction trends towards a 100 per cent asymptote when considering the most metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] â‰Ș −2.5). Considering this, its near proximity, and its small volume on the sky, the Galactic Centre lends itself as a prime environment in the search for the stars from the earliest galaxies, whilst avoiding contamination from GSE stars

    Here today, here tomorrow: Beached timber in Gabon, a persistent threat to nesting sea turtles

    notes:types: JOURThe African country of Gabon has seen decadal increases in commercial logging. An unforeseen consequence of this has been that many coastal areas, including several National Parks and Reserves, have suffered severe pollution from beached timber. This has the potential to adversely affect nesting sea turtles, particularly the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) for which Gabon constitutes the world’s largest rookery. In this study, we analyse aerial survey data (2003, 2007 and 2011) to determine the temporal persistence and spatial extent of beached timber, and by integrating spatial data on nesting, ascertain regions where beached timber poses the greatest threat to nesting leatherback turtles. There was no marked difference in the number of beached logs recorded across the study area during the period, with 15,160, 13,528 and 17,262 logs recorded in the three years, respectively. There was, however, a significant difference in abundance of beached logs among geographical areas. Analysis highlighted two coastal areas where nesting leatherback turtles were likely to be at greatest risk from beached timber. At one such site, Kingere, within Pongara National Park, where both logs and turtle densities are high, monitoring in 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 suggested that between 1.6% and 4.4% of leatherback turtles could be entrapped at this site. Given the dynamic nature of Gabon’s coastal environment, and the potential limitations of aerial surveys, densities of beached timber could be greater than this analysis reveals. We also propose, that despite recent export restrictions of whole logs, their environmental persistence potentially represents a long-term problem

    Astrophysical Tests of Dark Matter with Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer

    We discuss how astrophysical observations with the Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE), a high-multiplexity (about 4300 fibers), wide field-of-view (1.5 square degree), large telescope aperture (11.25 m) facility, can probe the particle nature of dark matter. MSE will conduct a suite of surveys that will provide critical input for determinations of the mass function, phase-space distribution, and internal density profiles of dark matter halos across all mass scales. N-body and hydrodynamical simulations of cold, warm, fuzzy and self-interacting dark matter suggest that non-trivial dynamics in the dark sector could have left an imprint on structure formation. Analysed within these frameworks, the extensive and unprecedented datasets produced by MSE will be used to search for deviations away from cold and collisionless dark matter model. MSE will provide an improved estimate of the local density of dark matter, critical for direct detection experiments, and will improve estimates of the J-factor for indirect searches through self-annihilation or decay into Standard Model particles. MSE will determine the impact of low mass substructures on the dynamics of Milky Way stellar streams in velocity space, and will allow for estimates of the density profiles of the dark matter halos of Milky Way dwarf galaxies using more than an order of magnitude more tracers. In the low redshift Universe, MSE will provide critical redshifts to pin down the luminosity functions of vast numbers of satellite systems, and MSE will be an essential component of future strong lensing measurements to constrain the halo mass function. Across nearly all mass scales, the improvements offered by MSE, in comparison to other facilities, are such that the relevant analyses are limited by systematics rather than statistics.Comment: 44 pages, 19 figures.     The experimental power of FR900359 to study Gq-regulated biological processes.

    Despite the discovery of heterotrimeric αÎČÎł G proteins ∌25 years ago, their selective perturbation by cell-permeable inhibitors remains a fundamental challenge. Here we report that the plant-derived depsipeptide FR900359 (FR) is ideally suited to this task. Using a multifaceted approach we systematically characterize FR as a selective inhibitor of Gq/11/14 over all other mammalian Gα isoforms and elaborate its molecular mechanism of action. We also use FR to investigate whether inhibition of Gq proteins is an effective post-receptor strategy to target oncogenic signalling, using melanoma as a model system. FR suppresses many of the hallmark features that are central to the malignancy of melanoma cells, thereby providing new opportunities for therapeutic intervention. Just as pertussis toxin is used extensively to probe and inhibit the signalling of Gi/o proteins, we anticipate that FR will at least be its equivalent for investigating the biological relevance of Gq

Medicinal chemistry optimization led to improvements in potency and solubility. Indole amide 3 represents a novel uncompetitive inhibitor with excellent physical and pharmaceutical properties that can be used as a starting point for drug discovery efforts
