The Transit Light Curve Project. X. A Christmas Transit of HD 17156b
Photometry is presented of the Dec. 25, 2007 transit of HD 17156b, which has
the longest orbital period and highest orbital eccentricity of all the known
transiting exoplanets. New measurements of the stellar radial velocity are also
presented. All the data are combined and integrated with stellar-evolutionary
modeling to derive refined system parameters. The planet's mass and radius are
found to be 3.212_{-0.082}^{+0.069} Jupiter masses and 1.023_{-0.055}^{+0.070}
Jupiter radii. The corresponding stellar properties are 1.263_{-0.047}^{+0.035}
solar masses and 1.446_{-0.067}^{+0.099} solar radii. The planet is smaller by
1 sigma than a theoretical solar-composition gas giant with the same mass and
equilibrium temperature, a possible indication of heavy-element enrichment. The
midtransit time is measured to within 1 min, and shows no deviation from a
linear ephemeris (and therefore no evidence for orbital perturbations from
other planets). We provide ephemerides for future transits and superior
conjunctions. There is an 18% chance that the orbital plane is oriented close
enough to edge-on for secondary eclipses to occur at superior conjunction.
Observations of secondary eclipses would reveal the thermal emission spectrum
of a planet that experiences unusually large tidal heating and insolation

Differential expression of ADAMTS -1, -4, -5 and TIMP -3 in rat spinal cord at different stages of acute experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis
Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is an animal model of inflammatory demyelination, a pathological event common to multiple sclerosis (MS). During CNS inflammation there are alterations in the extracellular matrix (ECM). A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase with Thrombospondin motifs (ADAMTS) -1, -4 and -5 are proteases present in the CNS, which are able to cleave the aggregating chondroitin sulphate proteoglycans, aggrecan, phosphacan, neurocan and brevican. It is therefore important to investigate changes in their expression in different stages of EAE induction. We have investigated expression of ADAMTS-1, -4, -5 and Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase (TIMP) -3, by real-time RT-PCR. We have also examined protein expression of ADAMTS-1, -4 and -5 by western blotting and immunocytochemistry in spinal cord from animals at different stages of disease progression. Our study demonstrated a decrease in ADAMTS-4 mRNA and protein expression. TIMP-3 was decreased at the mRNA level although protein levels were increased in diseased animals compared to controls. Our study identifies changes in ADAMTS expression during the course of CNS inflammation which may contribute to ECM degradation and disease progression.</p
Orbital Phase Variations of the Eccentric Giant Planet HAT-P-2b
We present the first secondary eclipse and phase curve observations for the highly eccentric hot Jupiter HAT-P-2b in the 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 μm bands of the Spitzer Space Telescope. The 3.6 and 4.5 μm data sets span an entire orbital period of HAT-P-2b (P = 5.6334729 d), making them the longest continuous phase curve observations obtained to date and the first full-orbit observations of a planet with an eccentricity exceeding 0.2. We present an improved non-parametric method for removing the intrapixel sensitivity variations in Spitzer data at 3.6 and 4.5 μm that robustly maps position-dependent flux variations. We find that the peak in planetary flux occurs at 4.39 ± 0.28, 5.84 ± 0.39, and 4.68 ± 0.37 hr after periapse passage with corresponding maxima in the planet/star flux ratio of 0.1138% ± 0.0089%, 0.1162% ± 0.0080%, and 0.1888% ± 0.0072% in the 3.6, 4.5, and 8.0 μm bands, respectively. Our measured secondary eclipse depths of 0.0996% ± 0.0072%, 0.1031% ± 0.0061%, 0.071%^(+0.029%)_(-0.013%), and 0.1392% ± 0.0095% in the 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 μm bands, respectively, indicate that the planet cools significantly from its peak temperature before we measure the dayside flux during secondary eclipse. We compare our measured secondary eclipse depths to the predictions from a one-dimensional radiative transfer model, which suggests the possible presence of a transient day side inversion in HAT-P-2b's atmosphere near periapse. We also derive improved estimates for the system parameters, including its mass, radius, and orbital ephemeris. Our simultaneous fit to the transit, secondary eclipse, and radial velocity data allows us to determine the eccentricity (e = 0.50910 ± 0.00048) and argument of periapse (ω = 188°.09 ± 0°.39) of HAT-P-2b's orbit with a greater precision than has been achieved for any other eccentric extrasolar planet. We also find evidence for a long-term linear trend in the radial velocity data. This trend suggests the presence of another substellar companion in the HAT-P-2 system, which could have caused HAT-P-2b to migrate inward to its present-day orbit via the Kozai mechanism
Astrobiological Complexity with Probabilistic Cellular Automata
Search for extraterrestrial life and intelligence constitutes one of the
major endeavors in science, but has yet been quantitatively modeled only rarely
and in a cursory and superficial fashion. We argue that probabilistic cellular
automata (PCA) represent the best quantitative framework for modeling
astrobiological history of the Milky Way and its Galactic Habitable Zone. The
relevant astrobiological parameters are to be modeled as the elements of the
input probability matrix for the PCA kernel. With the underlying simplicity of
the cellular automata constructs, this approach enables a quick analysis of
large and ambiguous input parameters' space. We perform a simple clustering
analysis of typical astrobiological histories and discuss the relevant boundary
conditions of practical importance for planning and guiding actual empirical
astrobiological and SETI projects. In addition to showing how the present
framework is adaptable to more complex situations and updated observational
databases from current and near-future space missions, we demonstrate how
numerical results could offer a cautious rationale for continuation of

Aboriginal Violence and State Response: Histories, Policies and Legacies in Queensland 1860–1940
During the long era of 'protection' (enacted in 1897, flourishing in the inter-war years and with effects continuing to this day) policy towards Australian Indigenous people suspected of inter-personal violence was ambiguous in its objectives and its means. Formally Indigenous peoples in Australia were British subjects entitled to the full protection of the law. As a consequence violence between Indigenous people was made visible through the conduct of inquests, police inquiries and in many cases subsequent arrest and charge with a criminal offence. Disposal of those charged or even suspected of crimes reflects tension between the universalising presumptions of the criminal law and the particularising effects of welfare regimes that ruled the lives of Indigenous people. Drawing on archives of inquests, courts and prisons in the Queensland jurisdiction before 1940, this article examines the policies and decision-making that characterised a state which remained determinedly colonial in its practises and ambitions. In conclusion, we consider briefly the question of how distinctive or how representative was Queensland practice as a state response to Indigenous violence during these decades of colonial subordination.Arts, Education & Law Group, School of Humanities, Languages and Social SciencesFull Tex
