Beyond the technical: The role of emotion regulation in lacrosse officiating.
Emotions can influence the performance of referees leading to a need to examine emotions experienced, and regulation strategies used by referees. The present study assessed emotions and emotion regulation strategies of 19 referees officiating at an Under-19 Lacrosse World Championship. Using survey methods and focus group interviews, officials responded to five questions: (a) What emotions were experienced? (b) What events elicited emotions? (c) How did lacrosse officials manage their own emotional states prior to, throughout, and following a competitive game? (d) How did officials manage others' emotional states? (e) What were the perceived consequences of these strategies? Results indicate that emotions fluctuated throughout the tournament as referees encountered intrapersonal and interpersonal emotion-eliciting events. These fluctuations are suggested to come from a progressively diminished capacity for emotion regulation. Participants used emotion regulation strategies that could be classified into Gross' (1999) families of emotion regulation strategies, often relying on suppression, emotion contagion, and preventative refereeing. Collectively, the results offer new insights into referee emotion regulation at international events

Sediment supply and barrier dynamics as driving mechanisms of Holocene coastal change for the southern North Sea basin
The combined effects of climate change and human impact lead to regional and local coastal responses that pose major challenges for the future resilience of coastal landscapes, increasing the vulnerability of communities, infrastructure and nature conservation interests. Using the Suffolk coast, southeast England, as a case study, we investigate the importance of sediment supply and barrier dynamics as driving mechanisms of coastal change throughout the Holocene. Litho-, bio- and chronostratigraphic methods are used to decipher the mechanisms of coastal change from the record preserved within coastal stratigraphy. Results suggest that local coastal configuration and sediment supply were the most influential in determining coastal change during the mid- and late Holocene, against a background control of sea-level rise. The importance of sedimentological and morphological factors in shaping Holocene coastal changes in the southern North Sea basin must therefore be considered when using the database of evidence from this region as an analogue for future change under accelerated sea-level rise
Considerations of control groups: Comparing active-control with no treatment for examining the effects of brief intervention

The published version can be accessed at the following link on the publisher’s website: https://doi.org/10.3390/sports9110156Background: A large-scale online study completed by this research team found that brief psychological interventions were associated with high-intensity pleasant emotions and predicted performance. The present study extends this work using data from participants (n = 3376) who completed all self-report data and engaged in a performance task but who did not engage with an intervention or control condition and therefore present as an opportunistic no-treatment group. Methods: 41,720 participants were selected from the process and outcome focus goals intervention groups, which were the successful interventions (n = 30,096), active-control (n = 3039), and no-treatment (n = 8585). Participants completed a competitive task four times: first as practice, second to establish a baseline, third following an opportunity to complete a brief psychological skills intervention, and lastly following an opportunity to repeat the intervention. Repeated measures MANOVA indicated that over four performance rounds, the intensity of positive emotions increased, performance improved, and the amount of effort participants exerted increased; however, these increases were significantly smaller in the no-treatment group. Conclusions: Findings suggest that not engaging in active training conditions had negative effects. We suggest that these findings have implications for the development and deployment of online interventions.Published versio

Genomics evolutionary history and diagnostics of the Alternaria alternata species group including apple and Asian pear pathotypes
The Alternaria section alternaria (Alternaria alternata species group) represents a diverse group of saprotrophs, human allergens, and plant pathogens. Alternaria taxonomy has benefited from recent phylogenetic revision but the basis of differentiation between major phylogenetic clades within the group is not yet understood. Furthermore, genomic resources have been limited for the study of host-specific pathotypes. We report near complete genomes of the apple and Asian pear pathotypes as well as draft assemblies for a further 10 isolates representing Alternaria tenuissima and Alternaria arborescens lineages. These assemblies provide the first insights into differentiation of these taxa as well as allowing the description of effector and non-effector profiles of apple and pear conditionally dispensable chromosomes (CDCs). We define the phylogenetic relationship between the isolates sequenced in this study and a further 23 Alternaria spp. based on available genomes. We determine which of these genomes represent MAT1- 1-1 or MAT1-2-1 idiomorphs and designate host-specific pathotypes. We show for the first time that the apple pathotype is polyphyletic, present in both the A. arborescens and A. tenuissima lineages. Furthermore, we profile a wider set of 89 isolates for both mating type idiomorphs and toxin gene markers. Mating-type distribution indicated that gene flow has occurred since the formation of A. tenuissima and A. arborescens lineages. We also developed primers designed to AMT14, a gene from the apple pathotype toxin gene cluster with homologs in all tested pathotypes. These primers allow identification and differentiation of apple, pear, and strawberry pathotypes, providing new tools for pathogen diagnostics
The role of discharge variability in determining alluvial stratigraphy
We illustrate the potential for using physics-based modeling to link alluvial stratigraphy to large river morphology and dynamics. Model simulations, validated using ground penetrating radar data from the Río Paraná, Argentina, demonstrate a strong relationship between bar-scale set thickness and channel depth, which applies across a wide range of river patterns and bar types. We show that hydrologic regime, indexed by discharge variability and flood duration, exerts a first-order influence on morphodynamics and hence bar set thickness, and that planform morphology alone may be a misleading variable for interpreting deposits. Indeed, our results illustrate that rivers evolving under contrasting hydrologic regimes may have very similar morphology, yet be characterized by marked differences in stratigraphy. This realization represents an important limitation on the application of established theory that links river topography to alluvial deposits, and highlights the need to obtain field evidence of discharge variability when developing paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Knockdown of Malic Enzyme 2 Suppresses Lung Tumor Growth, Induces Differentiation and Impacts PI3K/AKT Signaling
Mitochondrial malic enzyme 2 (ME2) catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of malate to yield CO2 and pyruvate, with concomitant reduction of dinucleotide cofactor NAD+ or NADP+. We find that ME2 is highly expressed in many solid tumors. In the A549 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell line, ME2 depletion inhibits cell proliferation and induces cell death and differentiation, accompanied by increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and NADP+/NADPH ratio, a drop in ATP, and increased sensitivity to cisplatin. ME2 knockdown impacts phosphoinositide-dependent protein kinase 1 (PDK1) and phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) expression, leading to AKT inhibition. Depletion of ME2 leads to malate accumulation and pyruvate decrease, and exogenous cell permeable dimethyl-malate (DMM) mimics the ME2 knockdown phenotype. Both ME2 knockdown and DMM treatment reduce A549 cell growth in vivo. Collectively, our data suggest that ME2 is a potential target for cancer therapy
Sample size for inspection intended to manage risk within mixed consignments
The identification of a lot, and the size of the random sample taken for plant products, is justified by appeal to International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 31, “Methodologies for Sampling of Consignments”. ISPM 31 notes that “A lot to be sampled should be a number of units of a single commodity identifiable by its homogeneity [...]” and “Treating multiple commodities as a single lot for convenience may mean that statistical inferences cannot be drawn from the results of the sampling.”
However, consignments are frequently heterogeneous, either because the same commodities have multiple sources or because there are several different commodities. The ISPM 31 prescription creates a substantial burden on border inspection because it suggests that heterogeneous populations must be split into homogeneous sub-populations from which separate samples of nominal size must be taken.
We demonstrate that if consignments with known heterogeneity are treated as stratified populations and the random sample of units is allocated proportionally based on the number of units in each stratum, then the nominal sensitivity at the consignment level is achieved if our concern is the level of contamination in the entire consignment taken as a whole. We argue that unknown heterogeneity is no impediment to appropriate statistical inference. We conclude that the international standard is unnecessarily restrictive
Influence of Dunes on Channel‐Scale Flow and Sediment Transport in a Sand Bed Braided River

and river morphodynamics is incomplete. We present results from a combined numerical
modeling and field monitoring study that isolates the impact of dunes on depth-averaged and
near-bed flow structure, with implications for morphodynamic modeling. Numerical
simulations were conducted using the three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics code
OpenFOAM to quantify the time-averaged flow structure within a 400 m x 100 m channel
using DEMs for which: (i) dunes and bars were present within the model; and (ii) only bar43 scale topographic features were resolved (dunes were removed). Comparison of these two
simulations shows that dunes enhance lateral flows and reduce velocities over bar tops by as
much as 30%. Dunes influence the direction of modeled sediment transport at spatial scales
larger than individual bedforms due to their effect on topographic steering of the near-bed flow
structure. We show that dunes can amplify, dampen or even reverse the deflection of sediment
down lateral bar slopes, and this is closely associated with 3D and obliquely orientated dunes.
Sediment transport patterns calculated using theory implemented in depth-averaged
morphodynamic models suggests that gravitational deflection of sediment is still controlled by
bar-scale topography, even in the presence of dunes. However, improved parameterizations of
flow and sediment transport in depth-averaged morphodynamic models are needed that account for the effects of both dune- and bar- scale morphology on near-bed flow and sediment transport.Natural Environment Research Council (NERC
