This prompted the design of an Eu3+-based ratiometric thermometer that functions at temperatures up to 95 °C through a thermally excited state absorption of the Eu3+ ion. The reusable temperature-sensitive luminescent complex showed a range of relative sensitivity between 0.45 % C−1 at 25 °C, with an increase to 7.0 % C−1 at 95 °C. Confinement of compound 1 in a transparent film of polysulfone resulted in a higher thermal stability of 1 while its luminescence showed a strong temperature dependence.authorsversionpublishe

Trabalho apresentado em 9th European Conference on Pesticides and Related Organic Micropolluants in the Environment, 4-7 de outubro 2016, Santiago de Compostela, EspanhaIn this study the effect of pH and dissolved organic matter (DOM) on the photodegradation rate of acetamiprid (ACT) was studied. Observed photodegradation rate constants in the range of 0.0010 – 0.0026 h-1 and 24 – 36 h-1 were obtained using a solar simulator (290-800 nm) and a medium pressure mercury (MP Hg) lamp, respectively. In both experiments an increase in pH from 5 to 9 did not significantly change the photodegradation rate constant of ACT. A different behaviour was found for ACT degradation in the presence of DOM. When samples were irradiated with MP Hg lamp the observed photodegradation rate constant of ACT decreased with an increase of DOM concentration.N/

Publisher Copyright: © 2023 The Author(s)The exploration of novel long-lived near-infrared (NIR) luminescent materials has attracted significant attention due to their applications in optical communications, anticounterfeiting, and bioimaging. However, these materials usually present low photoluminescence quantum yields and low photo- and chemical stability. Novel emitters that overcome these limitations are in demand. In this study, NIR emission was achieved using widely available, sustainable, and non-toxic materials through the synthesis of sulfur-doped zeolites, with different S/Cl ratios. With a combination of computational calculations (TD-DFT) and spectroscopic data, this emission was assigned to the radiative decay of excited triplet states of [S3]2- clusters, which resulted in a remarkably high Stokes shift (1.97 eV, 440 nm) and an average decay time of 0.54 ms. These new materials present high stability, external quantum efficiency of up to 17%, and a long-lived NIR emission, placing these compounds in a unique position to be used in applications demanding NIR emitters.publishersversionpublishe

Gaia FGK Benchmark stars: Opening the black box of stellar element abundance determination

    Get PDF
Gaia and its complementary spectroscopic surveys combined will yield the most comprehensive database of kinematic and chemical information of stars in the Milky Way. The Gaia FGK benchmark stars play a central role in this matter as they are calibration pillars for the atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances for various surveys. The spectroscopic analyses of the benchmark stars are done by combining different methods, and the results will be affected by the systematic uncertainties inherent in each method. In this paper, we explore some of these systematic uncertainties. We determined line abundances of Ca, Cr, Mn and Co for four benchmark stars using six different methods. We changed the default input parameters of the different codes in a systematic way and found, in some cases, significant differences between the results. Since there is no consensus on the correct values for many of these default parameters, we urge the community to raise discussions towards standard input parameters that could alleviate the difference in abundances obtained by different methods. In this work, we provide quantitative estimates of uncertainties in elemental abundances due to the effect of differing technical assumptions in spectrum modelling

This makes it useful for studies of the nature of the Milky Way spiral arms. Stromgren photometry taken with the Wide Field Camera at the Isaac Newton Telescope allowed us to compute individual physical parameters for the bserved stars and hence to derive cluster’s physical parameters. Spectra from the 1.93-m telescope at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence helped to check and improve the results. We obtained photometry for 1233 stars, individual physical parameters for 515 and spectra for 9 of them. The 139 selected cluster members lead to a cluster distance of 4.4±0.4 kpc, with an age below log10(t(yr))=7.3 and a present Mass of 1260±160M⊙. The morphology of the data reveals that the centre of the cluster is at (α,ÎŽ)=(21: 24: 13.69,+48: 00: 39.2) J2000, with a radius of 6.â€Č1. Stromgren and spectroscopic data allowed us to improve the previous parameters available for the cluster in the literature.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

Determinant and Weyl anomaly of Dirac operator: a holographic derivation

    Get PDF
We present a holographic formula relating functional determinants: the fermion determinant in the one-loop effective action of bulk spinors in an asymptotically locally AdS background, and the determinant of the two-point function of the dual operator at the conformal boundary. The formula originates from AdS/CFT heuristics that map a quantum contribution in the bulk partition function to a subleading large-N contribution in the boundary partition function. We use this holographic picture to address questions in spectral theory and conformal geometry. As an instance, we compute the type-A Weyl anomaly and the determinant of the iterated Dirac operator on round spheres, express the latter in terms of Barnes' multiple gamma function and gain insight into a conjecture by B\"ar and Schopka.Comment: 11 pages; new comments and references added, typos correcte

Revealing Polylepis microphylla as a suitable tree species for dendrochronology and quantitative wood anatomy in the Andean montane forests

    Get PDF
In the tropical Andes climate change is expected to increase temperatures and change precipitation patterns. To overcome the lack of systematic weather records that limits the performance of climate models in this region, the use of the environmental information contained in tree rings from tropical Andean species have been found useful to reconstruct spatio-temporal climate variability. Because classical dendrochronology based on ring-width patterns is often challenging in the tropics, alternative approaches such as Quantitative Wood Anatomy (QWA) based on the measurement and quantification of anatomical traits within tree rings can be a significant advance in the field. Here we assess the dendrochronological potential of Polylepis microphylla and its climate sensitivity by using i) classic dendrochronological methods to generate the first Tree-ring Width (TRW) chronology for this tree species spanning from 1965 to 2018; ii) radiocarbon (Âč⁎C) analyses as an independent validation method to assess the annual periodicity of the tree growth layers; and iii) QWA to generate tree-ring annual records of the number (VN) and size (VS) of vessels to investigate the climate sensitivity of these anatomical traits. The annual periodicity in P. microphylla radial growth was confirmed by both dendrochronological and Âč⁎C analyses. We found that VN and VS are promising new proxies to reconstruct climate variability in this region and that they provide different information than TRW. While TRW provides information at inter-annual resolution (i.e., year-to-year variability), VN and VS generated with sectorial QWA provide intra-annual resolution for each stage of the growing process. The TRW and the anatomical traits (i.e., VN and VS) showed strong positive correlation with maximum temperature for different periods of the growing season: while VS is higher with warmer conditions prior to the growing season onset, tree-rings are wider and present higher number of vessels when warmer conditions occur during the current growing season. Our findings pointed out the suitability of P. microphylla for dendrochronological studies and may suggest a good performance of this species under the significant warming expected according to future projections for the tropical Andes.Fil: RodrĂguez Morata, C.. Pure nanodiamonds for levitated optomechanics in vacuum

    Get PDF
Optical trapping at high vacuum of a nanodiamond containing a nitrogen vacancy centre would provide a test bed for several new phenomena in fundamental physics. However, the nanodiamonds used so far have absorbed too much of the trapping light, heating them to destruction (above 800 K) except at pressures above ~10 mbar where air molecules dissipate the excess heat. Here we show that milling diamond of 1000 times greater purity creates nanodiamonds that do not heat up even when the optical intensity is raised above 700 GW m−2 below 5 mbar of pressure

Acute febrile illness is associated with Rickettsia spp infection in dogs

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Rickettsia conorii is transmitted by Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks and causes Mediterranean Spotted Fever (MSF) in humans. Although dogs are considered the natural host of the vector, the clinical and epidemiological significance of R. conorii infection in dogs remains unclear. The aim of this prospective study was to investigate whether Rickettsia infection causes febrile illness in dogs living in areas endemic for human MSF. METHODS: Dogs from southern Italy with acute fever (n = 99) were compared with case–control dogs with normal body temperatures (n = 72). Serology and real-time PCR were performed for Rickettsia spp., Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum/A. platys and Leishmania infantum. Conventional PCR was performed for Babesia spp. and Hepatozoon spp. Acute and convalescent antibodies to R. conorii, E. canis and A. phagocytophilum were determined. RESULTS: The seroprevalence rates at first visit for R. conorii, E. canis, A. phagocytophilum and L. infantum were 44.8%, 48.5%, 37.8% and 17.6%, respectively. The seroconversion rates for R. conorii, E. canis and A. phagocytophilum were 20.7%, 14.3% and 8.8%, respectively. The molecular positive rates at first visit for Rickettsia spp., E. canis, A. phagocytophilum, A. platys, L. infantum, Babesia spp. and Hepatozoon spp. were 1.8%, 4.1%, 0%, 2.3%, 11.1%, 2.3% and 0.6%, respectively. Positive PCR for E. canis (7%), Rickettsia spp. (3%), Babesia spp. (4.0%) and Hepatozoon spp. (1.0%) were found only in febrile dogs. The DNA sequences obtained from Rickettsia and Babesia PCRs positive samples were 100% identical to the R. conorii and Babesia vogeli sequences in GenBank¼, respectively. Febrile illness was statistically associated with acute and convalescent positive R. conorii antibodies, seroconversion to R. conorii, E. canis positive PCR, and positivity to any tick pathogen PCRs. Fourteen febrile dogs (31.8%) were diagnosed with Rickettsia spp. infection based on seroconversion and/or PCR while only six afebrile dogs (12.5%) seroconverted (P = 0.0248). The most common clinical findings of dogs with Rickettsia infection diagnosed by seroconversion and/or PCR were fever, myalgia, lameness, elevation of C-reactive protein, thrombocytopenia and hypoalbuminemia. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates acute febrile illness associated with Rickettsia infection in dogs living in endemic areas of human MSF based on seroconversion alone or in combination with PCR
