Extracorporeal Circulation in Cardiac Surgery Inflammatory response, controversies and Future Directions
One of the milestones in the history of the cardiac surgery is the development of extracorporeal circulation, which allowed hundreds of thousands of patients under successful open cardiac surgery. It´s objective is to maintain the vital organ´s perfusion, provide a bloodless field for surgery, and at the same time, give protection to the heart and lungs. Its principle is to bring most or all of the patient’s systemic blood, which normally returns to the right atrium, into an oxygenator in which oxygen is supplied to the blood and carbon dioxide is removed. The arterialized blood is filtered, heated and, pumped into the aorta and the systemic arterial system. But this continuous blood recirculation through nonendothelial surfaces of the perfusion system produces an inflammatory response. Despite all the advantages and strategies developed to try to make the most physiological condition during the extracorporeal circulation, there are still persistent controversies, which we are going to review, as well as the inflammatory response produced by the perfusion system, and it´s future directions
Ginger (Zingiber officinale), better known as kion, has become an emblematic product of the exportable offer, with advantages and functional properties that are highly appreciated in the international market, with very notable official figures in 2019, placing Peru as the fourth exporting country world with 23.4 thousand tons and 41.5 million US .
The presence of Christella normalis (C. Chr.) Holttum (Thelypteridaceae) is reported as a novelty for the flora of the Valencian Community. We provide data on its distribution, ecology and relations with the other species of the same family cited in the territory. A review of the citations of the other species belonging to the same family for the Valencian Community has also been made. This has meant the removal from the Valencian flora for Christella dentata, so all references being attributable to the new taxon found. Likewise, references to Thelypteris palustris in the vicinity of the city of Valencia, currently an extinct population, are attributed to this taxon
Waiting list management of cardiac surgical procedures is a main concern for all the Spanish autonomic health systems and for our scientific Society. The first statement for optimal timing of patients waiting for cardiac surgery was published in 2000. Since then, after significant changes in the management of some pathologies, new normative frameworks and the current healthcare situation, a review of the timing criteria to offer an adequate and updated standard of care is needed. In this document we aim to review the available literature in the field and stablish a consensus within a working group of the Spanish Society of Cardiovascular and Endovascular Surgery to optimize the priority recommendations in cardiac surgical waiting lists in our country.
Interactions between wine phenolic compounds and human saliva in astringency perception
[EN] Astringency is a complex perceptual phenomenon involving several sensations that are perceived simultaneously. The mechanism leading to these sensations has been thoroughly and controversially discussed in the literature and it is still not well understood since there are many contributing factors. Although we are still far from elucidating the mechanisms whereby astringency develops, the interaction between phenolic compounds and proteins (from saliva, oral mucosa or cells) seems to be most important. This review summarizes the recent trends in the protein–phenol interaction, focusing on the effect of the structure of the phenolic compound on the interaction with salivary proteins and on methodologies based on these interactions to determine astringency
