Writers of the Harlem Renaissance at Odds: Wright and Hurston\u27s Different Approaches
This thesis speaks about “The Harlem Renaissance”, which is generally believed to have begun in the 1920’s, ending in the late 1930’s just before the Great Depression. During the Harlem Renaissance black people began to express themselves as a distinct culture. This expression took on many different forms; visual arts, music, literature, and theater. There were two general phases of the Harlem Renaissance. The first phase, 1921-1924, was the “Propaganda phase…to reveal the humanity of—and, thereby, validate—the African-American race through the strength of its arts and letters” (West 202). Thus this early stage was to show that blacks were feeling beings, like whites, and they showed this through their artistic abilities. The second phase, 1924-1931, “Connected Harlem writers to white intelligentsia with its access to established publishing companies” (West 202). The key authors of this time were Zora Neale Hurston and Richard Wright here. Hurston produced a plethora of literary works in her lifetime, including “essays, folklore, short stories, novels, plays, articles on anthropology and autobiography”. Author of the theses makes an analysis of Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God. Her focus isn’t on attaining equality, it is on bettering the arts so that there can be some strong black figures in American society. The second topic of this novel is racism, it’s used very subtly. Instead woven inconspicuously into certain points in the story to help the reader understand why some of the events are unfolding the way they are. The other author, Richard Wright became the most famous African-American writer during the Harlem Renaissance. From his works chose the author of the thesis an analysis of his novel Native Son. Wright is taking the ideas of the Harlem Renaissance one step further by introducing his political and social ideals to his readers. Major themes of Native Son are racism and communism. Both writers had different purposes in writing, despite the fact that they both are seeking respect for black people. Due to these differences the novels are different in terms of characterization, themes and writing style. Though Wright and Hurston have such vastly different views and such vastly different novels and writing styles, they are still working towards a similar goal: to promote and bring understanding to black culture

SiN x : Tb 3+-Yb 3+, an efficient down-conversion layer compatible with
silicon solar cell process Abstract Tb 3+-Yb 3+ co-doped SiN x down-conversion
layers compatible with silicon Photovoltaic Technology were prepared by
reactive magnetron co-sputtering. Efficient sensitization of Tb 3+ ions through
a SiN x host matrix and cooperative energy transfer between Tb 3+ and Yb 3+
ions were evidenced as driving mechanisms of the down-conversion process. In
this paper, the film composition and microstructure are investigated alongside
their optical properties, with the aim of maximizing the rare earth ions
incorporation and emission efficiency. An optimized layer achieving the highest
Yb 3+ emission intensity was obtained by reactive magnetron co-sputtering in a
nitride rich atmosphere for 1.2 W/cm and 0.15 W/cm power density
applied on the Tb and Yb targets, respectively. It was determined that
depositing at 200 {\textdegree}C and annealing at 850 {\textdegree}C leads to
comparable Yb 3+ emission intensity than depositing at 500 {\textdegree}C and
annealing at 600 {\textdegree}C, which is promising for applications toward

The Value of Identifying and Recovering Lost GN&C Lessons Learned: Aeronautical, Spacecraft, and Launch Vehicle Examples
Within the broad aerospace community the importance of identifying, documenting and widely sharing lessons learned during system development, flight test, operational or research programs/projects is broadly acknowledged. Documenting and sharing lessons learned helps managers and engineers to minimize project risk and improve performance of their systems. Often significant lessons learned on a project fail to get captured even though they are well known 'tribal knowledge' amongst the project team members. The physical act of actually writing down and documenting these lessons learned for the next generation of NASA GN&C engineers fails to happen on some projects for various reasons. In this paper we will first review the importance of capturing lessons learned and then will discuss reasons why some lessons are not documented. A simple proven approach called 'Pause and Learn' will be highlighted as a proven low-impact method of organizational learning that could foster the timely capture of critical lessons learned. Lastly some examples of 'lost' GN&C lessons learned from the aeronautics, spacecraft and launch vehicle domains are briefly highlighted. In the context of this paper 'lost' refers to lessons that have not achieved broad visibility within the NASA-wide GN&C CoP because they are either undocumented, masked or poorly documented in the NASA Lessons Learned Information System (LLIS)
Rest-Frame Optical Emission Lines in z~3.5 Lyman Break selected Galaxies: The Ubiquity of Unusually High [OIII]/Hbeta Ratios at 2 Gyr
We present K-band spectra of rest-frame optical emission lines for 24
star-forming galaxies at z~3.2-3.7 using MOSFIRE on the Keck 1 telescope.
Strong rest-frame optical [O III] and Hbeta emission lines were detected in 18
LBGs. The median flux ratio of [O III]5007 to Hbeta is 5.1+/-0.5, a factor of
5-10x higher than in local galaxies with similar stellar masses. The observed
Hbeta luminosities are in good agreement with expectations from the estimated
star-formation rates, and none of our sources are detected in deep X-ray
stacks, ruling out significant contamination by active galactic nuclei.
Combining our sample with a variety of LBGs from the literature, including 49
galaxies selected in a very similar manner, we find a high median ratio of
[OIII]/Hbeta = 4.8+0.8-1.7. This high ratio seems to be an ubiquitous feature
of z~3-4 LBGs, very different from typical local star-forming galaxies at
similar stellar masses. The only comparable systems at z~0 are those with
similarly high specific star-formation rates, though ~5x lower stellar masses.
High specific star-formation rates either result in a much higher ionization
parameter or other unusual conditions for the interstellar medium, which result
in a much higher [OIII]/Hbeta line ratio. This implies a strong relation
between a global property of a galaxy, the specific star-formation rate, and

High-precision Photometric Redshifts from Spitzer/IRAC: Extreme [3.6]-[4.5] Colors Identify Galaxies in the Redshift Range z~6.6-6.9
One of the most challenging aspects of studying galaxies in the z>~7 universe
is the infrequent confirmation of their redshifts through spectroscopy, a
phenomenon thought to occur from the increasing opacity of the intergalactic
medium to Lya photons at z>6.5. The resulting redshift uncertainties inhibit
the efficient search for [C II] in z~7 galaxies with sub-mm instruments such as
ALMA, given their limited scan speed for faint lines. One means by which to
improve the precision of the inferred redshifts is to exploit the potential
impact of strong nebular emission lines on the colors of z~4-8 galaxies as
observed by Spitzer/IRAC. At z~6.8, galaxies exhibit IRAC colors as blue as
[3.6]-[4.5] ~-1, likely due to the contribution of [O III]+Hb to the 3.6 mum
flux combined with the absence of line contamination in the 4.5 mum band. In
this paper we explore the use of extremely blue [3.6]-[4.5] colors to identify
galaxies in the narrow redshift window z~6.6-6.9. When combined with an
I-dropout criterion, we demonstrate that we can plausibly select a relatively
clean sample of z~6.8 galaxies. Through a systematic application of this
selection technique to our catalogs from all five CANDELS fields, we identify
20 probable z~6.6-6.9 galaxies. We estimate that our criteria select the ~50%
strongest line emitters at z~6.8 and from the IRAC colors we estimate a typical
[O III]+Hb rest-frame equivalent width of 1085A for this sample. The small
redshift uncertainties on our sample make it particularly well suited for

UV Luminosity Functions at redshifts z~4 to z~10: 10000 Galaxies from HST Legacy Fields
The remarkable HST datasets from the CANDELS, HUDF09, HUDF12, ERS, and
BoRG/HIPPIES programs have allowed us to map out the evolution of the UV LF
from z~10 to z~4. We have identified 5859, 3001, 857, 481, 217, and 6 galaxy
candidates at z~4, z~5, z~6, z~7, z~8, and z~10, respectively from the ~1000
arcmin**2 area probed. The selection of z~4-8 galaxies over the five CANDELS
fields allows us to assess the cosmic variance; the largest variations are
apparent at z>=7. Our new LF determinations at z~4 and z~5 span a 6-mag
baseline (-22.5 to -16 AB mag). These determinations agree well with previous
estimates, but the larger samples and volumes probed here result in a more
reliable sampling of >L* galaxies and allow us to reassess the form of the UV
LFs. Our new LF results strengthen our earlier findings to 3.4 sigma
significance for a steeper faint-end slope to the UV LF at z>4, with alpha
evolving from alpha=-1.64+/-0.04 at z~4 to alpha=-2.06+/-0.13 at z~7 (and alpha
= -2.02+/-0.23 at z~8), consistent with that expected from the evolution of the
halo mass function. With our improved constraints at the bright end, we find
less evolution in the characteristic luminosity M* over the redshift range z~4
to z~7; the observed evolution in the LF is now largely represented by changes
in phi*. No evidence for a non-Schechter-like form to the z~4-8 LFs is found. A
simple conditional LF model based on halo growth and evolution in the M/L ratio
of halos ((1+z)**-1.5) provides a good representation of the observed

The Bright End of the z~9 and z~10 UV Luminosity Functions using all five CANDELS Fields
The deep, wide-area (~800-900 arcmin**2) near-infrared/WFC3/IR + Spitzer/IRAC
observations over the CANDELS fields have been a remarkable resource for
constraining the bright end of high redshift UV luminosity functions (LFs).
However, the lack of HST 1.05-micron observations over the CANDELS fields has
made it difficult to identify z~9-10 sources robustly, since such data are
needed to confirm the presence of an abrupt Lyman break at 1.2 microns. We
report here on the successful identification of many such z~9-10 sources from a
new HST program (z9-CANDELS) that targets the highest-probability z~9-10 galaxy
candidates with observations at 1.05 microns, to search for a robust
Lyman-break at 1.2 microns. The potential z~9-10 candidates are preselected
from the full HST, Spitzer/IRAC S-CANDELS observations, and the
deepest-available ground-based optical+near-infrared observations. We
identified 15 credible z~9-10 galaxies over the CANDELS fields. Nine of these
galaxies lie at z~9 and 5 are new identifications. Our targeted follow-up
strategy has proven to be very efficient in making use of scarce HST time to
secure a reliable sample of z~9-10 galaxies. Through extensive simulations, we
replicate the selection process for our sample (both the preselection and
follow-up) and use it to improve current estimates for the volume density of
bright z~9 and z~10 galaxies. The volume densities we find are 5(-2)(+3)x and
8(-3)(+9)x lower, respectively, than found at z~8. When compared with the
best-fit evolution (i.e., dlog_{10} rho(UV)/dz=-0.29+/-0.02) in the UV
luminosities densities from z~8 to z~4 integrated to 0.3L*(z=3) (-20 mag),
these luminosity densities are 2.6(-0.9)(+1.5)x and 2.2(-1.1)(+2.0)x lower,
respectively, than the extrapolated trends. Our new results are broadly
consistent with the "accelerated evolution" scenario at z>8, as seen in many

S-CANDELS: The Spitzer-Cosmic Assembly Near-Infrared Deep Extragalactic Survey. Survey Design, Photometry, and Deep IRAC Source Counts
The Spitzer-Cosmic Assembly Deep Near-Infrared Extragalactic Legacy Survey
(S-CANDELS; PI G. Fazio) is a Cycle 8 Exploration Program designed to detect
galaxies at very high redshifts (z > 5). To mitigate the effects of cosmic
variance and also to take advantage of deep coextensive coverage in multiple
bands by the Hubble Space Telescope Multi-Cycle Treasury Program CANDELS,
S-CANDELS was carried out within five widely separated extragalactic fields:
the UKIDSS Ultra-Deep Survey, the Extended Chandra Deep Field South, COSMOS,
the HST Deep Field North, and the Extended Groth Strip. S-CANDELS builds upon
the existing coverage of these fields from the Spitzer Extended Deep Survey
(SEDS) by increasing the integration time from 12 hours to a total of 50 hours
but within a smaller area, 0.16 square degrees. The additional depth
significantly increases the survey completeness at faint magnitudes. This paper
describes the S-CANDELS survey design, processing, and publicly-available data
products. We present IRAC dual-band 3.6+4.5 micron catalogs reaching to a depth
of 26.5 AB mag. Deep IRAC counts for the roughly 135,000 galaxies detected by
S-CANDELS are consistent with models based on known galaxy populations. The
increase in depth beyond earlier Spitzer/IRAC surveys does not reveal a
significant additional contribution from discrete sources to the diffuse Cosmic
Infrared Background (CIB). Thus it remains true that only roughly half of the
