The Importance of Coastal Wetland Restoration in Old Lyme, CT: The White Sands Beach Salt Marsh Restoration Project

    Get PDF
In New England, coastal wetlands are rapidly drying up from widespread droughts, eroding from sea level rise, or being overrun by invasive species. Old Lyme, Connecticut relies heavily on the environmental and economic benefits of wetlands. In the last decade however, many coastal homes in Old Lyme, like the summer cottages of White Sands Beach, have been threatened by a lack of resilient wetlands surrounding them, and the coastal biodiversity of the town has decreased. The White Sands Beach Salt Marsh Restoration Project restored over an acre of coastal wetland at White Sands Beach through integrated marsh management strategies

The entire Winter/Spring 2023 issue of Newport History commemorates the presence of the French military in Newport during the Revolutionary War. As one historian has noted, “jubilation was in short supply” when the French fleet under Admiral de Ternay arrived in Newport harbor on July 11, 1780. The warships carried thousands of French soldiers commanded by General Rochambeau, coming to the aid of the American cause. Still reeling from the British occupation of 1776-1779, the town’s residents were wary of an influx of soldiers with a language, religion, and culture that differed from their own. Within a few days, however, Newport staged a grand illumination to welcome the officers and troops of their ally. Rochambeau’s army remained in Newport for almost a year, departing in June 1781

From Hide to Handbag: A Holistic Review of the Leather Industry and Its Environmental Impact

    Get PDF
Leather is a universally versatile material used in various products in the global market. Today, leather, specifically from the commercial cow, is still desired by manufacturers for its durability, accessibility, and quality. However, there are adverse environmental and ethical consequences of leather products using chrome tanning, in particular, that consumers do not recognize. This paper analyzes, evaluates, and contextualizes the current methods of leather production and the environmental issues associated with the trade. Furthermore, it discusses some sustainable efforts made regarding material choice and alternative production methods. With a holistic review of leather production and its implications, this paper examines the EU Strategy for Sustainable Circular Economy and Textiles, Chain of Custody - Transparency in Leather Manufacturing Pilot Program, and the Sustainable Development Goals in the Leather Industry EU. These policies aim to foster a more environmentally aware and sustainable leather trade. This paper will determine their effectiveness, feasibility, and potential drawbacks, then recommend reform options reflecting the current policies.https://digitalcommons.salve.edu/glo100/1002/thumbnail.jp

Military Effectiveness, Moral Injury, and the Just War Tradition in Western History

    No full text
A nation’s military effectiveness is a key factor in that nation’s decision to start and fight a war. Because Western liberal democracies normally attempt to make war in accordance with the Just War Tradition, the relationship between military effectiveness and that tradition would be of great interest to political and military leaders. Yet, to date, no one has conducted research to explore this relationship. This study uses qualitative and quantitative research methods to explore this relationship. Specifically, military morale and moral injury are considered to be factors in determining military effectiveness. Practice of jus ad bellum (“the right to war”) and jus in bello (“the law in waging war”) is considered a component of military morale while moral injury (experienced by a combatant who perpetrates or observes acts contrary to his own morality) is considered inversely proportional to morale. It is postulated that practice of jus ad bellum and jus in bello enhances morale and, therefore, military effectiveness. Moral injury, however, always diminishes morale and, therefore, military effectiveness. Military effectiveness, therefore, is proportional to the degree to which a warring nation practices the laws of war and inversely proportional to the degree to which its combatants suffer moral injury. This hypothesis is tested in four post-Second World War counterinsurgency campaigns conducted by Western liberal democracies: (1) the British effort to suppress the Mau Mau insurgency in colonial Kenya, (2) the French effort to suppress the native Algerian insurgency to gain independence, (3) the United States counterinsurgency effort in Iraq following the fall of Sadaam Hussein’s Sunni Islamic regime, and (4) the United States effort to defeat Al ‘Qaeda and remove the Islamic fundamentalist regime of the Taliban from power in Afghanistan. Qualitative analysis is used to evaluate the impact of application of the Just War Tradition and moral injury on the military effectiveness of the Western counterinsurgencies. Quantitative methods are employed to model the impact of application of the Just War Tradition and moral injury on the military effectiveness of the United States counterinsurgency in Iraq. Conclusions are derived from the tested hypotheses and suggestions for further research are indicated

Effect of Short-Term Home Follow-Up Visits on Readmissions of Veterans With Heart Failure

    No full text
Heart failure (HF) is a medical condition where the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body\u27s needs. It requires ongoing management and has the highest readmission rate among chronic conditions, resulting in a significant burden on healthcare systems and patients. This study evaluated effectiveness of the home visiting nursing service, called Hospital in Home (HIH), in preventing readmissions among veterans with HF. The HIH, a short-term nursing visiting program, was adopted by the Veterans Administration to provide multiple nursing interventions in patients’ homes in a span of 30 days. Patient records were reviewed in one hospital in the Northeast region of the United States that serves a predominantly urban population of veterans. Records of veterans who received nursing visiting services post-discharge were compared with those who received usual care, which was typically a follow-up visit with a primary care provider or a specialist

Interview with Jane (Brodie) Pelligrino \u2768

    No full text
In this interview conducted via Zoom, Jane (Brodie) Pellegrino, class of 1968, remembers her time at Salve Regina, including the leadership of the Sisters of Mercy who taught, served in loco parentis and enforced (or overlooked) rules regarding dress and male visitors. Jane recalls experiences with faculty such as professor of chemistry Asciano DiPippo and Sister Mary Philemon. She also reminisced about the Sisters Mary Eloise and Mary Jean Tobin, who in addition to teaching, were dorm mothers. Jane recalls major events that happened during her time at Salve and shortly after, such as the assasinations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy, the Czech Spring and the Chicago Convention, and hypothesized about the difference in cultural attitudes between her class, graduating in May 1968, and those who came in the years after

Eects of State of Charge on the Physical Characteristics of V(IV)/V(V) Electrolytes and Membrane for the All Vanadium Flow Battery

    Get PDF
The VO2+/VO2+ redox couple commonly employed on the positive terminal of the all-vanadium redox flow battery was investigated at various states of charge (SOC) and H2SO4 supporting electrolyte concentrations. Electron paramagnetic resonance was used to investigate the VO2+ concentration and translational and rotational diffusion coefficient (DT, DR) in both bulk solution and Nafion membranes. Values of DT and DR were relatively unaffected by SOC and on the order of 10−10 m2s−1. Cyclic voltammetry measurements revealed that no significant changes to the redox mechanism were observed as the state of charge increased; however, the mechanism does appear to be affected by H2SO4 concentration. Electron transfer rate (k0) increased by an order of magnitude (10−6 ms−1 to 10−8 ms−1) for each H2SO4 concentrations investigated (1, 3 and 5 M). Analysis of cyclic voltammetry switching currents suggests that the technique might be suitable for fast determination of state of charge if the system is well calibrated. Membrane uptake and permeability measurements show that vanadium absorption and crossover is more dependent on both acid and vanadium concentration than state of charge. Vanadium diffusion in the membrane is about an order of magnitude slower (~10−11 m2s−1) than in solution (~10−10 m2s−1)

The Evolving Relationship between Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China

    No full text
This dissertation is a qualitative study of the developing relationship between Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China. The primary timeframe of this research occurs between 2008 and 2020. During this time, Malaysia and China established closer relationships – both from an economic and security perspective. Nevertheless, Malaysia adheres to a “hedging” behavior, as it demonstrates neutrality and diplomatic behavior with respect to China. The study was conducted based upon broad research of the available, published digital literature. Both current academic and available regional news sources were examined. In addition, numerous Malaysian and Chinese academic sources were interviewed for their expertise and knowledge. These conversations served to validate the written source research. During the primary timeframe of the study, Malaysia demonstrated hedging behavior towards China. As detailed in the first Case Study, China established a physical presence in Kuantan, Malaysia – both at the Kuantan Port and the Malaysia China Kuantan Industrial Park. In the second Case study, the East Coast Rail Link showed that China could provide the financing and technological expertise to provide the needed economic connectivity between the East and West Coasts of Peninsular Malaysia. In the third Case Study, the corruption of PM Najib was revealed, and the accompanied Chinese domestic influence upon Malaysia disclosed. The impact of this research is to highlight China’s influence upon Malaysian domestic politics, as well as, China’s significant investments in Malaysia’s economic future. Malaysia hedges in order to promote non-alignment with respect to the great powers present in the SE Asia region. Malaysia does not seek any military confrontation with China. Rather, it wants to secure the financial benefits which China offers
