On Budget-Feasible Mechanism Design for Symmetric Submodular Objectives
We study a class of procurement auctions with a budget constraint, where an
auctioneer is interested in buying resources or services from a set of agents.
Ideally, the auctioneer would like to select a subset of the resources so as to
maximize his valuation function, without exceeding a given budget. As the
resources are owned by strategic agents however, our overall goal is to design
mechanisms that are truthful, budget-feasible, and obtain a good approximation
to the optimal value. Budget-feasibility creates additional challenges, making
several approaches inapplicable in this setting. Previous results on
budget-feasible mechanisms have considered mostly monotone valuation functions.
In this work, we mainly focus on symmetric submodular valuations, a prominent
class of non-monotone submodular functions that includes cut functions. We
begin first with a purely algorithmic result, obtaining a
-approximation for maximizing symmetric submodular functions
under a budget constraint. We view this as a standalone result of independent
interest, as it is the best known factor achieved by a deterministic algorithm.
We then proceed to propose truthful, budget feasible mechanisms (both
deterministic and randomized), paying particular attention on the Budgeted Max
Cut problem. Our results significantly improve the known approximation ratios
for these objectives, while establishing polynomial running time for cases
where only exponential mechanisms were known. At the heart of our approach lies
an appropriate combination of local search algorithms with results for monotone
submodular valuations, applied to the derived local optima.Comment: A conference version appears in WINE 201
On non-abelian T-dual geometries with Ramond fluxes
We show how to implement T-duality along non-abelian isometries in
backgrounds with non-vanishing Ramond fields. When the dimension of the
isometry group is odd (even) the duality swaps (preserves) the chirality of the
theory. In certain cases a non-abelian duality can result in a massive type-IIA
background. We provide two examples by dualising SU(2) isometry subgroups in
and . The resultant dual
geometries inherit the original AdS factors but have transverse spaces with
reduced isometry and preserve only half of the original supersymmetry. The
non-abelian dual of has an M-theory lift which is related to
the gravity duals of N=2 superconformal theories. We comment on a possible
interpretation of this as a high spin limit.Comment: 33 page
Estimation of standard molar entropy of cement hydrates and clinker minerals
It is not straightforward to experimentally measure the standard molar entropy of cement hydrates or clinker minerals. This is further compounded by the controversies surrounding the entropy values reported in established thermodynamic datasets for cements. The purpose of this study is to assess the reliability of standard entropies compiled in those datasets. To this end, a simple but robust method is used in which the standard entropy of an inorganic solid is correlated to its formula unit volume via a linear equation. The results of this analysis show that the standard entropies and/or molar volumes (and in cases solubility products) of the following phases deserve closer scrutiny: meta-ettringite phases; magnesium/aluminium layered double hydroxide solid solutions; almost all iron-bearing monosulfate and hydrogarnet phases; and several calcium silicate hydrate solid solution end-members. H2r: Identification of evolutionary important residues by means of an entropy based analysis of multiple sequence alignments
BACKGROUND: A multiple sequence alignment (MSA) generated for a protein can be used to characterise residues by means of a statistical analysis of single columns. In addition to the examination of individual positions, the investigation of co-variation of amino acid frequencies offers insights into function and evolution of the protein and residues. RESULTS: We introduce conn(k), a novel parameter for the characterisation of individual residues. For each residue k, conn(k) is the number of most extreme signals of co-evolution. These signals were deduced from a normalised mutual information (MI) value U(k, l) computed for all pairs of residues k, l. We demonstrate that conn(k) is a more robust indicator than an individual MI-value for the prediction of residues most plausibly important for the evolution of a protein. This proposition was inferred by means of statistical methods. It was further confirmed by the analysis of several proteins. CONCLUSION: The algorithms H2r, which analyses MSAs and computes conn(k)-values, characterises a specific class of residues. In contrast to strictly conserved ones, these residues possess some flexibility in the composition of side chains. Measurement of the p-pbar -> Wgamma + X cross section at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV and WWgamma anomalous coupling limits
The WWgamma triple gauge boson coupling parameters are studied using p-pbar
-> l nu gamma + X (l = e,mu) events at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV. The data were
collected with the DO detector from an integrated luminosity of 162 pb^{-1}
delivered by the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The cross section times branching
fraction for p-pbar -> W(gamma) + X -> l nu gamma + X with E_T^{gamma} > 8 GeV
and Delta R_{l gamma} > 0.7 is 14.8 +/- 1.6 (stat) +/- 1.0 (syst) +/- 1.0 (lum)
pb. The one-dimensional 95% confidence level limits on anomalous couplings are
-0.88 < Delta kappa_{gamma} < 0.96 and -0.20 < lambda_{gamma} < 0.20.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. D Rapid Communication
Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV using Kinematic Characteristics of Lepton + Jets Events
We present a measurement of the top quark pair ttbar production cross section
in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV using 230 pb**{-1}
of data collected by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We
select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon), large missing
transverse energy, and at least four jets, and extract the ttbar content of the
sample based on the kinematic characteristics of the events. For a top quark
mass of 175 GeV, we measure sigma(ttbar) = 6.7 {+1.4-1.3} (stat) {+1.6- 1.1}
(syst) +/-0.4 (lumi) pb, in good agreement with the standard model prediction.Comment: submitted to Phys.Rev.Let
Measurement of the ttbar Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV using Lepton + Jets Events with Lifetime b-tagging
We present a measurement of the top quark pair () production cross
section () in collisions at TeV
using 230 pb of data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab
Tevatron Collider. We select events with one charged lepton (electron or muon),
missing transverse energy, and jets in the final state. We employ
lifetime-based b-jet identification techniques to further enhance the
purity of the selected sample. For a top quark mass of 175 GeV, we
measure pb, in

Search for right-handed W bosons in top quark decay
We present a measurement of the fraction f+ of right-handed W bosons produced
in top quark decays, based on a candidate sample of events in the
lepton+jets decay mode. These data correspond to an integrated luminosity of
230pb^-1, collected by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron
Collider at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. We use a constrained fit to reconstruct the
kinematics of the and decay products, which allows for the
measurement of the leptonic decay angle for each event. By comparing
the distribution from the data with those for the expected
background and signal for various values of f+, we find
f+=0.00+-0.13(stat)+-0.07(syst). This measurement is consistent with the

Measurement of Semileptonic Branching Fractions of B Mesons to Narrow D** States
Using the data accumulated in 2002-2004 with the DO detector in
proton-antiproton collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron collider with
centre-of-mass energy 1.96 TeV, the branching fractions of the decays B ->
\bar{D}_1^0(2420) \mu^+ \nu_\mu X and B -> \bar{D}_2^{*0}(2460) \mu^+ \nu_\mu X
and their ratio have been measured: BR(\bar{b}->B) \cdot BR(B-> \bar{D}_1^0
\mu^+ \nu_\mu X) \cdot BR(\bar{D}_1^0 -> D*- pi+) =
(0.087+-0.007(stat)+-0.014(syst))%; BR(\bar{b}->B)\cdot BR(B->D_2^{*0} \mu^+
\nu_\mu X) \cdot BR(\bar{D}_2^{*0} -> D*- \pi^+) =
(0.035+-0.007(stat)+-0.008(syst))%; and (BR(B -> \bar{D}_2^{*0} \mu^+ \nu_\mu
X)BR(D2*0->D*- pi+)) / (BR(B -> \bar{D}_1^{0} \mu^+ \nu_\mu X)\cdot
BR(\bar{D}_1^{0}->D*- \pi^+)) = 0.39+-0.09(stat)+-0.12(syst), where the charge

Measurement of the Lifetime Difference in the B_s^0 System
We present a study of the decay B_s^0 -> J/psi phi We obtain the CP-odd
fraction in the final state at time zero, R_perp = 0.16 +/- 0.10 (stat) +/-
0.02 (syst), the average lifetime of the (B_s, B_sbar) system, tau (B_s^0)
=1.39^{+0.13}_{-0.16} (stat) ^{+0.01}_{-0.02} (syst) ps, and the relative width
difference between the heavy and light mass eigenstates, Delta Gamma/Gamma =
(Gamma_L - Gamma_H)/Gamma =0.24^{+0.28}_{-0.38} (stat) ^{+0.03}_{-0.04} (syst).
With the additional constraint from the world average of the B_s^0$lifetime
measurements using semileptonic decays, we find tau (B_s^0)= 1.39 +/- 0.06 ~ps
and Delta Gamma/\Gamma = 0.25^{+0.14}_{-0.15}. For the ratio of the B_s^0 and
B^0 lifetimes we obtain tau(B_s^0)/tau(B^0)} = 0.91 +/- 0.09 (stat) +/- 0.003
