Magnetic field stabilization for high-accuracy mass measurements on exotic nuclides
The magnetic-field stability of a mass spectrometer plays a crucial role in
precision mass measurements. In the case of mass determination of short-lived
nuclides with a Penning trap, major causes of instabilities are temperature
fluctuations in the vicinity of the trap and pressure fluctuations in the
liquid helium cryostat of the superconducting magnet. Thus systems for the
temperature and pressure stabilization of the Penning trap mass spectrometer
ISOLTRAP at the ISOLDE facility at CERN have been installed. A reduction of the
fluctuations by at least one order of magnitude downto dT=+/-5mK and
dp=+/-50mtorr has been achieved, which corresponds to a relative frequency
change of 2.7x10^{-9} and 1.5x10^{-10}, respectively. With this stabilization
the frequency determination with the Penning trap only shows a linear temporal
drift over several hours on the 10 ppb level due to the finite resistance of
the superconducting magnet coils.Comment: 23 pages, 13 figure
The effects of acute inflammation on cognitive functioning and emotional processing in humans: A systematic review of experimental studies
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this recordāÆObjective The cognitive neuropsychological model of depression proposes that negative biases in the processing of emotionally salient information have a central role in the development and maintenance of depression. We have conducted a systematic review to determine whether acute experimental inflammation is associated with changes to cognitive and emotional processing that are thought to cause and maintain depression. Methods We identified experimental studies in which healthy individuals were administered an acute inflammatory challenge (bacterial endotoxin/vaccination) and standardised tests of cognitive function were performed. Results Fourteen references were identified, reporting findings from 12 independent studies on 345 participants. Methodological quality was rated strong or moderate for 11 studies. Acute experimental inflammation was triggered using a variety of agents (including endotoxin from E. coli, S. typhi, S. abortus Equi and Hepatitis B vaccine) and cognition was assessed over hours to months, using cognitive tests of i) attention/executive functioning, ii) memory and iii) social/emotional processing. Studies found mixed evidence that acute experimental inflammation caused changes to attention/executive functioning (2 of 6 studies showed improvements in attention executive function compared to control), changes in memory (3 of 5 studies; improved reaction time: reduced memory for object proximity: poorer immediate and delayed memory) and changes to social/emotional processing (4 of 5 studies; reduced perception of emotions, increased avoidance of punishment/loss experiences, and increased social disconnectedness). Conclusions Acute experimental inflammation causes negative biases in social and emotional processing that could explain observed associations between inflammation and depression.National Institute for Health Research (NIHR
Production of human recombinant proapolipoprotein A-I in Escherichia coli: purification and biochemical characterization
A human liver cDNA library was used to isolate a clone coding for apolipoprotein A-I (Apo A-I). The clone
carries the sequence for the prepeptide (18 amino acids), the propeptide (6 amino acids), and the mature protein
(243 amino acids). A coding cassette for the proapo A-I molecule was reconstructed by fusing synthetic
sequences, chosen to optimize expression and specifying the amino-terminal methionine and amino acids -6
to +14, to a large fragment of the cDNA coding for amino acids 15-243. The module was expressed in
pOTS-Nco, an Escherichia coli expression vector carrying the regulatable X P^ promoter, leading to the production
of proapolipoprotein A-I at up to 10% of total soluble proteins. The recombinant polypeptide was
purified and characterized in terms of apparent molecular mass, isoelectric point, and by both chemical and
enzymatic peptide mapping. In addition, it was assayed in vitro for the stimulation of the enzyme lecithin:
cholesterol acyltransferase. The data show for the first time that proapo A-I can be produced efficiently in
E. coli as a stable and undegraded protein having physical and functional properties indistinguishable from
those of the natural product
First Direct Double-Beta Decay Q-value Measurement of 82Se in Support of Understanding the Nature of the Neutrino
In anticipation of results from current and future double-beta decay studies,
we report a measurement resulting in a 82Se double-beta decay Q-value of
2997.9(3) keV, an order of magnitude more precise than the currently accepted
value. We also present preliminary results of a calculation of the 82Se
neutrinoless double-beta decay nuclear matrix element that corrects in part for
the small size of the shell model single-particle space. The results of this
work are important for designing next generation double-beta decay experiments
and for the theoretical interpretations of their observations.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review

Involvement of Candida albicans in hyperkeratosis of the Gƶttingen minipig
At a breeding colony of Gƶttingen minipigs, 6404 animals born in 1995-1997 were examined for the ocurance of hyperkeratosis. and the percentage of animals with hyperkeratosis was calculated on a monthly base. From 25 animals. skin swabs were taken, and the swabs were inoculated on Saburaudās agar. pH 4.2 at 20 C for three to seven days. All morphologically distinct colonies were sampled and grown as pure cultures on Sabauraudās agar after which they were Gram stained. The percentage animals with hyperkeratosis varied from 1.4 to 6.9% monthly, with an average of 3.6%, 4.9% and 4 8% for the years 1995, 1996 and 1997 respectively. Candida albicans infection was not found on the skin at. the back or head of animals with hyperkeratosis. One healthy animal was positive for Candida albicans. Some animals had a brown staining at the periocular regioni of the sampled animals with brown staining at the periocular region, all findings were positive for Candida albicans. Other infections found were Candida humicola and Trichosporon spp. In connection with histological examination Candida parapsilosis was found. The underlying cause of hyperkeratosis remains unknown. Hyperkeratosis is not associated with Candida albicans infection
Ranking Spaces for Predicting Human Movement in an Urban Environment
A city can be topologically represented as a connectivity graph, consisting
of nodes representing individual spaces and links if the corresponding spaces
are intersected. It turns out in the space syntax literature that some defined
topological metrics can capture human movement rates in individual spaces. In
other words, the topological metrics are significantly correlated to human
movement rates, and individual spaces can be ranked by the metrics for
predicting human movement. However, this correlation has never been well
justified. In this paper, we study the same issue by applying the weighted
PageRank algorithm to the connectivity graph or space-space topology for
ranking the individual spaces, and find surprisingly that (1) the PageRank
scores are better correlated to human movement rates than the space syntax
metrics, and (2) the underlying space-space topology demonstrates small world
and scale free properties. The findings provide a novel justification as to why
space syntax, or topological analysis in general, can be used to predict human
movement. We further conjecture that this kind of analysis is no more than
predicting a drunkard's walking on a small world and scale free network.

Further Studies on the Transient Stability of Synchronous-Synchronous Rotary Frequency Converter Fed Railways with Low-Frequency ac High-Voltage Transmission
This paper continues the pursuit of getting a deeper understanding regarding the transient stability of low-frequency AC railway power systems operated at 16 2/3 Hz that are synchronously connected to the public grid. Here, the focus is set on such grids with a low-frequency AC high-voltage transmission line subject to a fault. The study here is limited to railways being fed by different distributions of Rotary Frequency Converter (RFC) types. Both auto transformer (AT) and booster transformer (BT) catenaries are considered. No mixed model conļ¬gurations in the converter stations (CSs) are considered in this study. Therefore, only interactions between RFCs in different CSs and between RFCs, the fault, and the load can take place in this study. The RFC dynamic models are essentially two Anderson-Fouad models of synchronous machines coupled mechanically by their rotors being connected to the same mechanical shaft. Besides the new cases studied, also a new voltage-dependent active power load model is presented and used in this study
A monument to the player: Preserving a landscape of socio-cultural capital in the transitional MMORPG
This is the pre-print version of the Article. The official published version can be accessed from the links below - Copyright @ 2012 Taylor & Francis LtdMassively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) produce dynamic socio-ludic worlds that nurture both culture and gameplay to shape experiences. Despite the persistent nature of these games, however, the virtual spaces that anchor these worlds may not always be able to exist in perpetuity. Encouraging a community to migrate from one space to another is a challenge now facing some game developers. This paper examines the case of Guild WarsĀ® and its āHall of Monumentsā, a feature that bridges the accomplishments of players from the current game to the forthcoming sequel. Two factor analyses describe the perspectives of 105 and 187 self-selected participants. The results reveal four factors affecting attitudes towards the feature, but they do not strongly correlate with existing motivational frameworks, and significant differences were found between different cultures within the game. This informs a discussion about the implications and facilitation of such transitions, investigating themes of capital, value perception and assumptive worlds. It is concluded that the way subcultures produce meaning needs to be considered when attempting to preserve the socio-cultural landscape
How to Educate Entrepreneurs?
Entrepreneurship education has two purposes: To improve studentsā entrepreneurial skills and to provide impetus to those suited to entrepreneurship while discouraging the rest. While entrepreneurship education helps students to make a vocational decision its effects may conflict for those not suited to entrepreneurship. This study shows that vocational and the skill formation effects of entrepreneurship education can be identified empirically by drawing on the Theory of Planned Behavior. This is embedded in a structural equation model which we estimate and test using a robust 2SLS estimator. We find that the attitudinal factors posited by the Theory of Planned Behavior are positively correlated with studentsā entrepreneurial intentions. While conflicting effects of vocational and skill directed course content are observed in some individuals, overall these types of content are complements. This finding contradicts previous results in the literature. We reconcile the conflicting findings and discuss implications for the design of entrepreneurship courses
Do mutual funds have consistency in their performance?
Using a comprehensive data set of 714 Chinese mutual funds from 2004 to 2015, the study investigates these fundsā performance persistence by using the Capital Asset Pricing model, the Fama-French three-factor model and the Carhart Four-factor model. For persistence analysis, we categorize mutual funds into eight octiles based on their one year lagged performance and then observe their performance for the subsequent
12 months. We also apply Cross-Product Ratio technique to assess the performance
persistence in these Chinese funds. The study finds no significant evidence of persis- tence in the performance of the mutual funds. Winner (loser) funds do not continue to be winner (loser) funds in the subsequent time period. These findings suggest that future performance of funds cannot be predicted based on their past performance.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
