Prospects of target nanostructuring for laser proton acceleration

    Get PDF
In laser-based proton acceleration, nanostructured targets hold the promise to allow for significantly boosted proton energies due to strong increase of laser absorption. We used laser-induced periodic surface structures generated in-situ as a very fast and economic way to produce nanostructured targets capable of high-repetition rate applications. Both in experiment and theory, we investigate the impact of nanostructuring on the proton spectrum for different laser-plasma conditions. Our experimental data show that the nanostructures lead to a significant enhancement of absorption over the entire range of laser plasma conditions investigated. At conditions that do not allow for efficient laser absorption by plane targets, i.e. too steep plasma gradients, nanostructuring is found to significantly enhance the proton cutoff energy and conversion efficiency. In contrast, if the plasma gradient is optimized for laser absorption of the plane target, the nanostructure-induced absorption increase is not reflected in higher cutoff energies. Both, simulation and experiment point towards the energy transfer from the laser to the hot electrons as bottleneck

Watching the birth of a charge density wave order: diffraction study on nanometer-and picosecond-scales

Femtosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction is used to study a photo-induced phase transition between two charge density wave (CDW) states in 1T-TaS2_2, namely the nearly commensurate (NC) and the incommensurate (I) CDW states. Structural modulations associated with the NC-CDW order are found to disappear within 400 fs. The photo-induced I-CDW phase then develops through a nucleation/growth process which ends 100 ps after laser excitation. We demonstrate that the newly formed I-CDW phase is fragmented into several nanometric domains that are growing through a coarsening process. The coarsening dynamics is found to follow the universal Lifshitz-Allen-Cahn growth law, which describes the ordering kinetics in systems exhibiting a non-conservative order parameter.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

    The Factorized S-Matrix of CFT/AdS

We argue that the recently discovered integrability in the large-N CFT/AdS system is equivalent to diffractionless scattering of the corresponding hidden elementary excitations. This suggests that, perhaps, the key tool for finding the spectrum of this system is neither the gauge theory's dilatation operator nor the string sigma model's quantum Hamiltonian, but instead the respective factorized S-matrix. To illustrate the idea, we focus on the closed fermionic su(1|1) sector of the N=4 gauge theory. We introduce a new technique, the perturbative asymptotic Bethe ansatz, and use it to extract this sector's three-loop S-matrix from Beisert's involved algebraic work on the three-loop su(2|3) sector. We then show that the current knowledge about semiclassical and near-plane-wave quantum strings in the su(2), su(1|1) and sl(2) sectors of AdS_5 x S^5 is fully consistent with the existence of a factorized S-matrix. Analyzing the available information, we find an intriguing relation between the three associated S-matrices. Assuming that the relation also holds in gauge theory, we derive the three-loop S-matrix of the sl(2) sector even though this sector's dilatation operator is not yet known beyond one loop. The resulting Bethe ansatz reproduces the three-loop anomalous dimensions of twist-two operators recently conjectured by Kotikov, Lipatov, Onishchenko and Velizhanin, whose work is based on a highly complex QCD computation of Moch, Vermaseren and Vogt.Comment: 38 pages, LaTeX, JHEP3.cl

Circular and Folded Multi-Spin Strings in Spin Chain Sigma Models

From the SU(2) spin chain sigma model at the one-loop and two-loop orders we recover the classical circular string solution with two S^5 spins (J_1, J_2) in the AdS_5 x S^5 string theory. In the SL(2) sector of the one-loop spin chain sigma model we explicitly construct a solution which corresponds to the folded string solution with one AdS_5 spin S and one S^5 spin J. In the one-loop general sigma model we demonstrate that there exists a solution which reproduces the energy of the circular constant-radii string solution with three spins (S_1, S_2, J).Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX, no figure

Experimental investigation of fast electron transport in solid density matter: Recent results from a new technique of X-ray energy-encoded 2D imaging

    Get PDF
AbstractThe development activity of a new experimental technique for the study of the fast electron transport in high density matter is reported. This new diagnostic tool enables the X-ray 2D imaging of ultrahigh intensity laser plasmas with simultaneous spectral resolution in a very large energy range to be obtained. Results from recent experiments are discussed, in which the electron propagation in multilayer targets was studied by using the Kα. In particular, results highlighting the role of anisotropic Bremsstrahlung are reported, for the sake of the explanation of the capabilities of the new diagnostics. A discussion of a test experiment conceived to extend the technique to a single-shot operation is finally given

Novel method for characterizing relativistic electron beams in a harsh laser-plasma environment

Particle pulses generated by laser-plasma interaction are characterized by ultrashort duration, high particle density, and sometimes a very strong accompanying electromagnetic pulse (EMP). Therefore, beam diagnostics different from those known from classical particle accelerators such as synchrotrons or linacs are required. Easy to use single-shot techniques are favored, which must be insensitive towards the EMP and associated stray light of all frequencies, taking into account the comparably low repetition rates and which, at the same time, allow for usage in very space-limited environments. Various measurement techniques are discussed here, and a space-saving method to determine several important properties of laser-generated electron bunches simultaneously is presented. The method is based on experimental results of electron-sensitive imaging plate stacks and combines these with Monte Carlo-type ray-tracing calculations, yielding a comprehensive picture of the properties of particle beams. The total charge, the energy spectrum, and the divergence can be derived simultaneously for a single bunch

Abstract The study of the basic physical processes underlying the generation of fast electrons during the interaction of high-intensity short laser pulses with solid materials and the transport of these fast electrons through the target material are of great importance for the fast ignition concept for inertial confinement fusion and for the development of ultra-short X-ray sources. We report on the experimental investigation of fast electron transport phenomena by means of the spatial and spectral characterization of the X-ray emission from layered targets using bent crystal spectrometers and a new diagnostic technique based on a pinhole-camera equipped with a CCD detector working in single-photon regime for multi-spectral X-ray imaging The experiments were carried out at relativistic laser intensities, both in the longer (≃ps) pulse interaction regime relevant for fast ignition studie

Investigation of an IC Engine Intake Flow Based on Highly Resolved LES and PIV

To reduce emissions and fuel consumption, the current generation of gasoline engines uses technologies such as direct injection, downsizing and supercharging. All of them require a strong vortical in-cylinder charge motion, usually described as “tumble”, to improve fuel-air mixing and enhance flame propagation. The tumble development strongly depends on the flow field during the intake stroke. This flow field is dominated by the intake jet, which has to be captured well in the simulation. This work investigates the intake jet on a steady-state flow bench, especially in the vicinity of the intake valve. At first, the general flow dynamics of the intake jet for three different valve lifts and three different mass flows were investigated experimentally. For the smallest valve lift (3 mm), flow-field measurements using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) show that the orientation of the intake jet significantly depends on the air flow rate, attaching to the pent roof for low flow rates. This phenomenon is less pronounced for higher valve lifts. An intermediate valve lift and flow rate were chosen for further investigations by scale-resolving simulations. Three different meshes (coarse, medium and fine) and two turbulence models (Sigma and Detached Eddy Simulation-Shear Stress Transport (DES-SST)) are applied to consider their effect on the numerical results. An ad-hoc post-processing methodology based on the ensemble-averaged velocity field is presented capturing the jet centerline’s mean velocity and velocity fluctuations as well as its orientation, curvature and penetration depth. The simulation results are compared to each other as well as to measurements by PIV
