Unrestricted multivariate medians for adaptive filtering of color images

    Get PDF
Reduction of impulse noise in color images is a fundamental task in the image processing field. A number of approaches have been proposed to solve this problem in literature, and many of them rely on some multivariate median computed on a relevant image window. However, little attention has been paid to the comparative assessment of the distinct medians that can be used for this purpose. In this paper we carry out such a study, and its conclusions lead us to design a new image denoising procedure. Quantitative and qualitative results are shown, which demonstrate the advantages of our method in terms of noise reduction, detail preservation and stability with respect to a selection of well-known proposals.Presentado en el IX Workshop Computación Gráfica, Imágenes y Visualización (WCGIV)Red de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI

Reliability evaluation of III-V concentrator solar cells

Concentrator solar cells have been proposed as an interesting way of reducing the cost of photovoltaic electricity. However, in order to compete with conventional solar modules it is necessary not only to reduce costs but also to evaluate and increase the present reliability. Concentrator solar cells work at higher temperature, solar radiation and current stress than conventional solar cells and a carefully reliability analysis is needed. In this paper a reliability analysis procedure, that is being developed, is presented

Reliability Improvement in III-V Concentrator Solar Cells by Means of Perimeter Protection

    Get PDF
This paper presents the evolution in the strategy to assess the reliability of III-V solar cells and a new thermal ageing test carried out over GaAs single junction solar cells at three different temperatures (130, 150 and 170° C). The perimeter of the solar cells has been protected with silicone, which seems to be an effective way of enhancing the reliability of the solar cells. A preliminary analysis of the results indicates a mean time to failure (MTTF) one order of magnitude larger than the one obtained in a previous thermal test with the perimeter uncoated

Security and privacy issues in implantable medical devices: A comprehensive survey

    Get PDF
Bioengineering is a field in expansion. New technologies are appearing to provide a more efficient treatment of diseases or human deficiencies. Implantable Medical Devices (IMDs) constitute one example, these being devices with more computing, decision making and communication capabilities. Several research works in the computer security field have identified serious security and privacy risks in IMDs that could compromise the implant and even the health of the patient who carries it. This article surveys the main security goals for the next generation of IMDs and analyzes the most relevant protection mechanisms proposed so far. On the one hand, the security proposals must have into consideration the inherent constraints of these small and implanted devices: energy, storage and computing power. On the other hand, proposed solutions must achieve an adequate balance between the safety of the patient and the security level offered, with the battery lifetime being another critical parameter in the design phase

Atomic layering and related postmelting effects in small liquid metal clusters

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaThe specific heat of Na_25, as obtained by first-principles molecular dynamics simulations, shows interesting anomalies above the melting phase-change region: a) It steadily decreases with increasing temperature, an effect observed also in bulk liquid metals. This trend is explained in terms of the gradual conversion of vibrational modes into diffusion modes; b) on top of this decreasing trend, the specific heat shows broad undulations, induced by the temperature-dependent atomic layering in the liquid cluster. Extended liquid metal surfaces also show atomic layering, but it does not affect the bulk heat capacity. This effect is therefore genuine of finite atomic systems and should be expected to be quite general in metal clusters

The Extended Water Footprint and illegal groundwater use in the Upper Guadiana Basin (Spain)

Tablas de Daimiel National Park is located in the Upper Guadiana Basin and represents one of the largest and most important wetlands in Europe. The long term ecological integrity of this wetland is inherently associated with the maintenance of a shallow groundwater table, namely the Western Mancha aquifer (WMA) or Aquifer 23. The intensive use of groundwater, mainly for irrigation, has led over the last decades to deep socio‐economic changes. Such intensive use has also lowered the water table of Aquifer 23, drastically reducing the flooded area of the wetland and threatening its ecological integrity. A number of plans and measures have been developed and implemented since the declaration of overexploitation of Aquifer 23 in the year 1987. The most recent one is the Special Plan for the Upper Guadiana (SPUG), approved in 2008. This Plan is the main measure to comply with achieving the objective of good quantitative and qualitative status required under the Water Framework Directive (2000). This paper offers a new type of integrated analysis which allows assessing under a common lens the physical, economic and social dimensions of groundwater use in the area. The first objective is to calculate the groundwater footprint of agricultural production in the Upper Guadiana basin and its evolution during 2000‐2008. For this purpose, we have applied the Extended Water Footprint (EWF) methodology ‐a novel approach based on the classical Water Footprint (WF) approach‐ that includes an assessment of the water productivity from an economic and social perspective. Compared to the classical WF, the EWF allows for a more complete overview of the sector, providing new insights for policy decisions (e.g. to define options and possibilities on water re‐allocation in order to achieve both better ecosystem conservation and social equity). The second objective is to use the EWF to compare the existing authorized and non‐authorized or illegal use of water. This allows us to discuss current initiatives by public authorities in relation to the existing frame of water right

    Get PDF
