    Get PDF
A new soft coral species of the genus Nidalia, from seamounts to the south of the Azores Archipelago is described. The main features of Nidalia aurantia n. sp. are as following: colony torch-like, a capitulum light orange in colour, not laterally Xattened, dome-shaped and not distinctly projecting beyond the stalk, an introvert with sparse sclerites transversally placed, and an anthocodial crown with 13–17 sclerite rows. The new species is compared with its closest congeners. This is the Wrst time that a species of Nidalia has been located in the Mid-Atlantic Ocean

Seasonal Variation of Essential Oil Yield and Composition of Sage (Salvia officinalis L.) Grown in Castilla - La Mancha (Central Spain)

    Get PDF
Links between phenology, yield and composition of the essential oil of common sage, Salvia officinalis L., grown in Guadalajara (Central Spain) were determined in the different phases of the biological cycle during one year. Data showed an average yield about 1.0%. The analysis of the oil components was carried out by GC-FID and GC/MS. The main oil constituent was alpha thujone (40.1 - 46.5%). Other identified compounds are beta pinene (2.6 - 4.5%), cineole (3.5 - 8.7%), beta thujone (4.1 - 5.6%), camphor (4.1 - 8.0%), borneol (1.3 - 3.7%), alpha humulene (3.8 - 7.3%), viridiflorol (3.4-12.6%) and manool (0.1-4.5%). The highest yield of oil was obtained in the period of full flowering and the highest concentration of alpha thujone in the period of initial flowering

Distributed multivariate regression with unknown noise covariance in the presence of outliers: an MDL approach

    Get PDF
We consider the problem of estimating the coefficients in a multivariable linear model by means of a wireless sensor network which may be affected by anomalous measurements. The noise covariance matrices at the different sensors are assumed unknown. Treating outlying samples, and their support, as additional nuisance parameters, the Maximum Likelihood estimate is investigated, with the number of outliers being estimated according to the Minimum Description Length principle. A distributed implementation based on iterative consensus techniques is then proposed, and it is shown effective for managing outliers in the data.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Teaching methodology and educational technology in the development of cognitive competences: implementation in university contexts

    Get PDF
This research analyses different methodological strategies and techniques involving the use of Educational Technology from a consistent educational approach with a development of cognitivecompetences. The method arises from a descriptive analysis and a factor analysis with a questionnaire with 2 dimensions as an instrument. The sample of 121 students from 2 Spanish universities value positively the application of collaborative learning and integration of Educational Technology with all its possibilities even though they mostly prefer classroomteaching than e-learning. In this sense, we conclude that there are very positive appreciations about the different methodological strategies and techniques that enhance active and collaborative approach involving the development of cognitive competences and based on the concept of learning by doing

    Get PDF
This paper shows the characteristics of a web application designed to represent the family relationships between components of a word family in Spanish (bdme.usc.es). The application consists of two modules: a) a morphological database of Spanish and b) a visualization tool. Different formulations of the concept of ‘word family’ will be shown, as well as some procedures that have been used in other projects in order to account for morpho-lexical relationships. The convenience of a historical approach to word families will be discussed, as well as the appropriateness of working with two types of family relationships: (i) the one associating a word with its origin and (ii) the one associating the word with its lexical base. Some issues that emerged during the process of conversion from a single-user to a multiple-access database will be discussed. The main features of the database will be explained. The design of two representational forms (tree and linear diagrams) will be shown: the former aims to produce a global representation of a word family while the latter seeks to represent the progression of derivational processes in the series of a given language.

Las Kellys and tourism: from the invisibility of care to political visibility

    Get PDF
The work done by the Kellys, or apartment waitresses/cleaners, is characterised by it lying in what could be called “care work”, despite being completely undertaken in the production field and forming a vital part of the tourism sector. Their case is a clear example of the intersection between precarious work and the invisibility of some tasks that have been historically and culturally appointed to women and condemned to social scorn. In today’s context, it is worth considering the social conditions underlying this group of workers and the implications that stem from their situation of invisibility in such a precarious sector as the tourism one in the Spanish State, and the role played by the Kellys, as an association, to claim these female workers’ employment rights. We will analyse their particular case as a clear example of the socio-political movement that struggles to make their care work visible and contributes to the repoliticisation of their work in the public domain.

Colour morph does not predict brood size in the Booted Eagle.

    Get PDF
Mechanisms regulating colour polymorphism remain largely unknown and detailed investigation is required to explore the biological consequences on population dynamics. This paper presents the first study of the possible connection between colour polymorphism and productivity in a Booted Eagle (Aquila pennata) population breeding in southeastern Spain. To that end we used 19 years of data of non-marked individuals. A total of 738 pale (91.6%) and 68 dark (8.4%) adult Booted Eagles were observed in our study area, including 57 territories. Our results suggest that colour morph of both sexes remained stable in the population over the study period. Although we found a higher number of offspring produced by parents exhibiting the dark morph than those of the pale morph, statistical differences were not significant. Hence, our models showed that colour polymorphism was not a good predictor of Booted Eagles'productivity, although further research by capture-recapture analysis would be needed to explore the influence of colour variation on fitness components at individual level and its consequences at population level of long-lived species
