Åtte godt trente idrettsstudenter deltok i denne studien.Resultatene fra denne studien kan derfor indikere at kompresjonsstrømper kan bidra til noe raskere fjerning av laktat fra blodet, men funnene er imidlertid for svake til at vi kan si at strømpene har en betydelig effekt på laktatfjerning og dermed også liten effekt på restitusjonen.     Effect of cereal grains on the formation of heterocyclic aromatic amines in fried beef patties

Advisor: Professor Dr. Mirko Bunzel. 1 computer file (PDF); ix, 110 pages, appendices A-F.The effect of incorporating flours representing different anatomical parts of the grain of corn, wild rice, and oat as well as corn bran extract into beef patties on the formation of heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) during grilling was investigated. Beef burgers containing 5 or 10% dry cereal solids or cereal extract adsorbed to a cellulose carrier were grilled for 7 minutes per side on an electric grill. The HAA content of the cooked material was assessed using an optimized solid-phase extraction method, reversed-phase HPLC separation, and UV and fluorescence detection. 9H-Pyrido[3,4-b]indole (norharman), 1-methyl-9H-pyrido[3,4-b]indole (harman), 9H-pyrido[2,3-b]indol-2-amine (A-alpha-C), 1-methyl-6-phenyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-b]pyridin-2-amine (PhIP), and 3,8-dimethyl-3H-imidazo[4,5-f]quinoxalin-2-amine (MeIQx) were detected in all burgers. Norharman and harman formation were significantly increased in fried beef patties grilled with wild rice hulls, wild rice flour, and oat hulls. Other treatments also tended to increase beta-carboline (harman and norharman) and PhIP levels relative to plain beef patties. Due to the analytical set-up it was not possible to obtain a full set of reliable data about the effect of cereal materials on the formation of MeIQx, but some materials may be able to reduce the formation of this HAA. It is concluded that the addition of whole cereal materials in beef patties is not an effective way to reduce the formation of beta-carbolines and PhIP during grilling. Definite conclusions about the effect of cereal materials on the formation of MeIQx and structurally related HAAs cannot be drawn from this study

    ECOLOGICAL IMPLICATIONS OF ANTI-PATHOGEN EFFECTS OF TROPICAL FUNGAL ENDOPHYTES AND MYCORRHIZAE

    We discuss studies of foliar endophytic fungi (FEE) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) associated with Theobroma cacao in Panama. Direct, experimentally controlled comparisons of endophyte free (E—) and endophyte containing (E+) plant tissues in T. cacao show that foliar endophytes (FEE) that commonly occur in healthy host leaves enhance host defenses against foliar damage due to the pathogen (Phytophthora palmivora). Similarly, root inoculations with commonly occurring AMF also reduce foliar damage due to the same pathogen. These results suggest that endophytic fungi can play a potentially important mutualistic role by augmenting host defensive responses against pathogens. There are two broad classes of potential mechanisms by which endophytes could contribute to host protection: (1) inducing or increasing the expression of intrinsic host defense mechanisms and (2) providing additional sources of defense, extrinsic to those of the host (e.g., endophytebased chemical antibiosis). The degree to which either of these mechanisms predominates holds distinct consequences for the evolutionary ecology of host-endophyte-pathogen relationships.     Prospective multi-center study of oncologic outcomes of robot-assisted partial nephrectomy for pT1 renal cell carcinoma

    BACKGROUND: Partial nephrectomy has been increasingly recommended over radical nephrectomy for the management of small renal masses based on improved renal functional outcomes without sacrifice of oncologic effectiveness. Robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) has been introduced in an effort to offer another minimally invasive option for nephron-sparing surgery. However, reports of RAPN have been limited to short-term perioperative outcomes. The goal of this study is to report and evaluate the initial oncologic outcomes of RAPN. Utilizing prospectively obtained data on RAPN performed by four surgeons at four separate tertiary care centers, we selected patients with unilateral, localized, non-familial, pathologically-confirmed pT1 renal cell carcinoma and a minimum post-operative follow-up of 12 months. METHODS: Utilizing prospectively obtained data on RAPN performed by four surgeons at four separate tertiary care centers, we selected patients with unilateral, localized, non-familial, pathologically-confirmed pT1 renal cell carcinoma and a minimum post-operative follow-up of 12 months. Survival analysis (disease-free, cancer-specific, and overall survival) was performed, and Kaplan-Meier curves were generated. RESULTS: RAPN was performed in 124 patients with a median tumor size of 3.0 cm (IQR 2.2-4.2 cm). Median follow-up was 29 months (range 12-46 months). Positive parenchymal surgical margins occurred in two patients (1.6 %), both of whom were recurrence-free at 30 and 34 months after surgery. The three-year Kaplan-Meier estimated disease-free survival was 94.9 %, cancer-specific survival was 99.1 %, and overall survival was 97.3 %. CONCLUSIONS: In our cohort of patients with small renal carcinomas who were followed for a median of 29 months, recurrence and survival outcomes were similar to those reported for open and laparoscopic partial nephrectomy. Further long-term outcomes will be needed to definitively claim that RAPN is oncologically equivalent to other surgical approaches

    A Review of Controlling Motivational Strategies from a Self-Determination Theory Perspective: Implications for Sports Coaches

    The aim of this paper is to present a preliminary taxonomy of six controlling strategies, primarily based on the parental and educational literatures, which we believe are employed by coaches in sport contexts. Research in the sport and physical education literature has primarily focused on coaches’ autonomysupportive behaviours. Surprisingly, there has been very little research on the use of controlling strategies. A brief overview of the research which delineates each proposed strategy is presented, as are examples of the potential manifestation of the behaviours associated with each strategy in the context of sports coaching. In line with self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985; Ryan & Deci, 2002), we propose that coach behaviours employed to pressure or control athletes have the potential to thwart athletes’ feelings of autonomy, competence,and relatedness, which, in turn, undermine athletes’ self-determined motivation and contribute to the development of controlled motives. When athletes feel pressured to behave in a certain way, a variety of negative consequences are expected to ensue which are to the detriment of the athletes’ well-being. The purpose of this paper is to raise awareness and interest in the darker side of sport participation and to offer suggestions for future research in this area

    Psychological determinants of whole-body endurance performance

    Background: No literature reviews have systematically identified and evaluated research on the psychological determinants of endurance performance, and sport psychology performance-enhancement guidelines for endurance sports are not founded on a systematic appraisal of endurance-specific research. Objective: A systematic literature review was conducted to identify practical psychological interventions that improve endurance performance and to identify additional psychological factors that affect endurance performance. Additional objectives were to evaluate the research practices of included studies, to suggest theoretical and applied implications, and to guide future research. Methods: Electronic databases, forward-citation searches, and manual searches of reference lists were used to locate relevant studies. Peer-reviewed studies were included when they chose an experimental or quasi-experimental research design, a psychological manipulation, endurance performance as the dependent variable, and athletes or physically-active, healthy adults as participants. Results: Consistent support was found for using imagery, self-talk, and goal setting to improve endurance performance, but it is unclear whether learning multiple psychological skills is more beneficial than learning one psychological skill. The results also demonstrated that mental fatigue undermines endurance performance, and verbal encouragement and head-to-head competition can have a beneficial effect. Interventions that influenced perception of effort consistently affected endurance performance. Conclusions: Psychological skills training could benefit an endurance athlete. Researchers are encouraged to compare different practical psychological interventions, to examine the effects of these interventions for athletes in competition, and to include a placebo control condition or an alternative control treatment. Researchers are also encouraged to explore additional psychological factors that could have a negative effect on endurance performance. Future research should include psychological mediating variables and moderating variables. Implications for theoretical explanations of endurance performance and evidence-based practice are described

    Novel deletion alleles carrying CYP21A1P/A2 chimeric genes in Brazilian patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Congenital adrenal hyperplasia due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency is caused by deletions, large gene conversions or mutations in <it>CYP21A2 </it>gene. The human gene is located at 6p21.3 within a <it>locus </it>containing the genes for putative serine/threonine Kinase <it>RP</it>, complement <it>C4</it>, steroid 21-hydroxylase <it>CYP21 </it>tenascin <it>TNX</it>, normally, in a duplicated cluster known as RCCX module. The <it>CYP21 </it>extra copy is a pseudogene (<it>CYP21A1P</it>). In Brazil, 30-kb deletion forming monomodular alleles that carry chimeric <it>CYP21A1P/A2 </it>genes corresponds to ~9% of disease-causing alleles. Such alleles are considered to result from unequal crossovers within the bimodular <it>C4/CYP21 locus</it>. Depending on the localization of recombination breakpoint, different alleles can be generated conferring the locus high degree of allelic variability. The purpose of the study was to investigate the variability of deleted alleles in patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We used different techniques to investigate the variability of 30-kb deletion alleles in patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency. Alleles were first selected after Southern blotting. The composition of <it>CYP21A1P/A2 </it>chimeric genes was investigated by ASO-PCR and MLPA analyses followed by sequencing to refine the location of recombination breakpoints. Twenty patients carrying at least one allele with <it>C4/CYP21 </it>30-kb deletion were included in the study.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>An allele carrying a <it>CYP21A1P/A2 </it>chimeric gene was found unusually associated to a <it>C4B/C4A </it><it>Taq </it>I 6.4-kb fragment, generally associated to <it>C4B </it>and <it>CYP21A1P </it>deletions. A novel haplotype bearing both p.P34L and p.H62L, novel and rare mutations, respectively, was identified in exon 1, however p.P30L, the most frequent pseudogene-derived mutation in this exon, was absent. Four unrelated patients showed this haplotype. Absence of p.P34L in <it>CYP21A1P </it>of normal controls indicated that it is not derived from pseudogene. In addition, the combination of different approaches revealed nine haplotypes for deleted 21-hydroxylase deficiency alleles.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study demonstrated high allelic variability for 30-kb deletion in patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency indicating that a founder effect might be improbable for most monomodular alleles carrying <it>CYP21A1P/A2 </it>chimeric genes in Brazil.</p
