Event-related potentials elicited by spoken relative clauses
Sentence-length event-related potential (ERP) waveforms were obtained from 23 scalp sites as 24 subjects listened to normally spoken sentences of various syntactic structures. The critical materials consisted of 36 sentences each containing one of 2 types of relative clauses that differ in processing difficulty, namely Subject Object (SO) and Subject Subject (SS) relative clauses. Sentence-length ERPs showed several differences in the slow scalp potentials elicited by SO and SS sentences that were similar in their temporal dynamics to those elicited by the same stimuli in a word-by-word reading experiment, although the effects in the two modalities have non identical distributions. Just as for written sentences, there was a large, fronto-central negativity beginning at the linguistically defined "gap" in the SO sentences; this effect was largest for listeners with above-median comprehension rates, and is hypothesized to index changes in on-line processing demands during comprehension
Extended Recurrence Plot Analysis and its Application to ERP Data
We present new measures of complexity and their application to event related
potential data. The new measures base on structures of recurrence plots and
makes the identification of chaos-chaos transitions possible. The application
of these measures to data from single-trials of the Oddball experiment can
identify laminar states therein. This offers a new way of analyzing

Listening to limericks: a pupillometry investigation of perceivers’ expectancy
What features of a poem make it captivating, and which cognitive mechanisms are sensitive to these features? We addressed these questions experimentally by measuring pupillary responses of 40 participants who listened to a series of Limericks. The Limericks ended with either a semantic, syntactic, rhyme or metric violation. Compared to a control condition without violations, only the rhyme violation condition induced a reliable pupillary response. An anomaly-rating study on the same stimuli showed that all violations were reliably detectable relative to the control condition, but the anomaly induced by rhyme violations was perceived as most severe. Together, our data suggest that rhyme violations in Limericks may induce an emotional response beyond mere anomaly detection
What's in a name? Electrophysiological differences between spoken nouns, proper nouns and one's own name
To investigate the neural processing of different word categories, we recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) from 32 individuals listening to sentences, beginning either with a proper name (first name), the subject's own name, or a common noun. Names and nouns both elicited ERP waveforms with the same early componentry, but the N1 and P2 components were larger for proper names than common nouns. The ERPs to the subject's own name also had a large N1/P2 plus a prominent negativity at parieto-central site peaking around 400 ms and a late positivity between 500-800 ms over left lateral-frontal sites. These findings are consistent with differential processing of people's first names within the category of nouns

Evidence from neurolinguistic methodologies: can it actually inform linguistic/ language acquisition theories and translate to evidence-based applications?
This special issue is a testament to the recent burgeoning interest by theoretical linguists, language acquisitionists and teaching practitioners in the neuroscience of language. It offers a highly valuable, state-of-the-art overview of the neurophysiological methods that are currently being applied to questions in the field of second language (L2) acquisition, teaching and processing. Research in the area of neurolinguistics has developed dramatically in the past twenty years, providing a wealth of exciting findings, many of which are discussed in the papers in this volume. The goal of this commentary is twofold. The first is to critically assess the current state of neurolinguistic data from the point of view of language acquisition and processing—informed by the papers that comprise this special issue and the literature as a whole—pondering how the neuroscience of language/processing might inform us with respect to linguistic and language acquisition theories. The second goal is to offer some links from implications of exploring the first goal towards informing language teachers and the creation of linguistically and neurolinguistically-informed evidence-based pedagogies for non-native language teaching
Measuring and managing liquidity risk in the Hungarian practice
The crisis that unfolded in 2007/2008 turned the attention of the financial world toward liquidity, the lack of which caused substantial losses. As a result, the need arose for the traditional financial models to be extended with liquidity. Our goal is to discover how
Hungarian market players relate to liquidity. Our results are obtained through a series of semistructured
interviews, and are hoped to be a starting point for extending the existing models in an appropriate way. Our main results show that different investor groups can be identified along their approaches to liquidity, and they rarely use sophisticated models to measure and manage liquidity. We conclude that although market players would have access to complex liquidity measurement and management tools, there is a limited need for these, because the currently available models are unable to use complex liquidity information effectively
Neurophysiological evidence for rapid processing of verbal and gestural information in understanding communicative actions
During everyday social interaction, gestures are a fundamental part of human communication. The communicative pragmatic role of hand gestures and their interaction with spoken language has been documented at the earliest stage of language development, in which two types of indexical gestures are most prominent: the pointing gesture for directing attention to objects and the give-me gesture for making requests. Here we study, in adult human participants, the neurophysiological signatures of gestural-linguistic acts of communicating the pragmatic intentions of naming and requesting by simultaneously presenting written words and gestures. Already at ~150 ms, brain responses diverged between naming and request actions expressed by word-gesture combination, whereas the same gestures presented in isolation elicited their earliest neurophysiological dissociations significantly later (at ~210 ms). There was an early enhancement of request-evoked brain activity as compared with naming, which was due to sources in the frontocentral cortex, consistent with access to action knowledge in request understanding. In addition, an enhanced N400-like response indicated late semantic integration of gesture-language interaction. The present study demonstrates that word-gesture combinations used to express communicative pragmatic intentions speed up the brain correlates of comprehension processes – compared with gesture-only understanding – thereby calling into question current serial linguistic models viewing pragmatic function decoding at the end of a language comprehension cascade. Instead, information about the social-interactive role of communicative acts is processed instantaneously
Age-related delay in information accrual for faces: Evidence from a parametric, single-trial EEG approach
Background: In this study, we quantified age-related changes in the time-course of face processing
by means of an innovative single-trial ERP approach. Unlike analyses used in previous studies, our
approach does not rely on peak measurements and can provide a more sensitive measure of
processing delays. Young and old adults (mean ages 22 and 70 years) performed a non-speeded
discrimination task between two faces. The phase spectrum of these faces was manipulated
parametrically to create pictures that ranged between pure noise (0% phase information) and the
undistorted signal (100% phase information), with five intermediate steps.
Results: Behavioural 75% correct thresholds were on average lower, and maximum accuracy was
higher, in younger than older observers. ERPs from each subject were entered into a single-trial
general linear regression model to identify variations in neural activity statistically associated with
changes in image structure. The earliest age-related ERP differences occurred in the time window
of the N170. Older observers had a significantly stronger N170 in response to noise, but this age
difference decreased with increasing phase information. Overall, manipulating image phase
information had a greater effect on ERPs from younger observers, which was quantified using a
hierarchical modelling approach. Importantly, visual activity was modulated by the same stimulus
parameters in younger and older subjects. The fit of the model, indexed by R2, was computed at
multiple post-stimulus time points. The time-course of the R2 function showed a significantly slower
processing in older observers starting around 120 ms after stimulus onset. This age-related delay
increased over time to reach a maximum around 190 ms, at which latency younger observers had
around 50 ms time lead over older observers.
Conclusion: Using a component-free ERP analysis that provides a precise timing of the visual
system sensitivity to image structure, the current study demonstrates that older observers
accumulate face information more slowly than younger subjects. Additionally, the N170 appears to
be less face-sensitive in older observers

The Role of Glutamate in Language and Language Disorders - Evidence from ERP and Pharmacologic Studies
Current models of language processing do not address mechanisms at the neurotransmitter level, nor how pharmacologic agents may improve language function(s) in seemingly disparate disorders. L-Glutamate, the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in the human brain, is extensively involved in various higher cortical functions. We postulate that the physiologic role of L-Glutamate neurotransmission extends to the regulation of language access, comprehension, and production, and that disorders in glutamatergic transmission and circuitry contribute to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases and sporadic-onset language disorders such as the aphasic stroke syndromes. We start with a review of basic science data pertaining to various glutamate receptors in the CNS and ways that they may influence the physiological processes of language access and comprehension. We then focus on the dysregulation of glutamate neurotransmission in three conditions in which language dysfunction is prominent: Alzheimer's Disease, Fragile X-associated Tremor/Ataxia Syndrome, and Aphasic Stroke Syndromes. Finally, we review the pharmacologic and electrophysiologic (event related brain potential or ERP) data pertaining to the role glutamate neurotransmission plays in language processing and disorders
