    The use of autonomous systems has been rapidly increasing in recent decades. To improve human-automation interaction, trust has been closely studied. Research shows trust is critical in the development of appropriate reliance on automation. To examine how trust mediates the human-automation relationships across cultures, the present study investigated the influences of cultural factors on trust in automation. Theoretically guided empirical studies were conducted in the U.S., Taiwan and Turkey to examine how cultural dynamics affect various aspects of trust in automation.     Critical behavior of density of states near Fermi energy in low-dimensional disordered metals

    We study the effect of electron-electron interaction on the one-particle density of states (\emph{DOS}) ρ(d)(ϵ,T)\rho^{(d)}(\epsilon,T) of low-dimensional disordered metals near Fermi energy within the framework of the finite temperature conventional impurity diagram technique. We consider only diffusive limit and by a geometric re-summation of the most singular first order self-energy corrections via the Dyson equation we obtain a non-divergent solution for the \emph{DOS} at low energies, while for higher energies the well-known Altshuler-Aronov corrections are recovered. At the Fermi level ρ(d)(ϵ,T=0)0\rho^{(d)}(\epsilon,T=0)\to 0, this indicates that interacting disordered two- and quasi-one-dimensional systems are in insulating state at zero temperature. The obtained results are in good agreement with recent tunneling experiments on two-dimensional GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures and quasi-one-dimensional doped multiwall carbon nanotubes.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Noninvasive Brain Stimulation and Noninvasive Peripheral Stimulation for Neglect Syndrome Following Acquired Brain Injury

    OBJECTIVE: Hemispatial neglect is a frequent condition usually following nondominant hemispheric brain injury. It strongly affects rehabilitation strategies and everyday life activities. It is associated with behavioral and cognitive disability with a strong impact on patient's life. METHODS: We reviewed the published literature on the use of noninvasive brain stimulation, including repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and of noninvasive peripheral muscle stimulation, as therapeutic strategies for rehabilitation of neglect after acquired brain injury, such as in stroke or in traumatic injuries. The studies were grouped as controlled or uncontrolled studies in each stimulation techniques. RESULTS: Thirty-four studies were identified and 16 on rTMS, 10 on tDCS, and 8 on vibration. All studies were conducted in adult patients who suffered a stroke, except for one that was conducted in a patient suffering traumatic acquired brain injury and another that was conducted in a patient with brain tumor. In spite of significant variability in treatment protocols, patients' features and assessment of neglect, improvement was reported in almost all studies with no side-effects. CONCLUSIONS: Noninvasive brain stimulation and neuromuscular vibration are promising therapeutic neuromodulatory approaches for neglect. Further randomized-controlled studies are needed to corroborate their effectiveness as separate and combined techniques

    Density of States of Disordered Two-Dimensional Crystals with Half-Filled Band

    A diagrammatic method is applied to study the effects of commensurability in two-dimensional disordered crystalline metals by using the particle-hole symmetry with respect to the nesting vector P_0={\pm{\pi}/a, {\pi}/a} for a half-filled electronic band. The density of electronic states (DoS) is shown to have nontrivial quantum corrections due to both nesting and elastic impurity scattering processes, as a result the van Hove singularity is preserved in the center of the band. However, the energy dependence of the DoS is strongly changed. A small offset from the middle of the band gives rise to disappearence of quantum corrections to the DoS .Comment: to be published in Physical Review Letter

    Effect of Substitutional Impurities on the Electronic States and Conductivity of Crystals with Half-filled Band

    Low temperature quantum corrections to the density of states (DOS) and the conductivity are examined for a two-dimensional(2D) square crystal with substitutional impurities. By summing the leading logarithmic corrections to the DOS its energy dependence near half-filling is obtained. It is shown that substitutional impurities do not suppress the van Hove singularity at the middle of the band, however they change its energy dependence strongly. Weak disorder due to substitutional impurities in the three-dimensional simple cubic lattice results in a shallow dip in the center of the band. The calculation of quantum corrections to the conductivity of a 2D lattice shows that the well-known logarithmic localization correction exists for all band fillings. Furthermore the magnitude of the correction increases as half-filling is approached. The evaluation of the obtained analytical results shows evidence for delocalized states in the center of the band of a 2D lattice with substitutional impurities

    Infrared skin damage thresholds from 1940-nm continuous-wave laser exposures

    A series of experiments are conducted in vivo using Yucatan mini-pigs (Sus scrofa domestica) to determine thermal damage thresholds to the skin from 1940-nm continuous-wave thulium fiber laser irradiation. Experiments employ exposure durations from 10 ms to 10 s and beam diameters of approximately 4.8 to 18 mm. Thermal imagery data provide a time-dependent surface temperature response from the laser. A damage endpoint of minimally visible effect is employed to determine threshold for damage at 1 and 24 h postexposure. Predicted thermal response and damage thresholds are compared with a numerical model of optical-thermal interaction. Results are compared with current exposure limits for laser safety. It is concluded that exposure limits should be based on data representative of large-beam exposures, where effects of radial diffusion are minimized for longer-duration damage threshold

    A ferritin-based COVID-19 nanoparticle vaccine that elicits robust, durable, broad-spectrum neutralizing antisera in non-human primates

    While the rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines has been a scientific triumph, the need remains for a globally available vaccine that provides longer-lasting immunity against present and future SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs). Here, we describe DCFHP, a ferritin-based, protein-nanoparticle vaccine candidate that, when formulated with aluminum hydroxide as the sole adjuvant (DCFHP-alum), elicits potent and durable neutralizing antisera in non-human primates against known VOCs, including Omicron BQ.1, as well as against SARS-CoV-1. Following a booster ~one year after the initial immunization, DCFHP-alum elicits a robust anamnestic response. To enable global accessibility, we generated a cell line that can enable production of thousands of vaccine doses per liter of cell culture and show that DCFHP-alum maintains potency for at least 14 days at temperatures exceeding standard room temperature. DCFHP-alum has potential as a once-yearly (or less frequent) booster vaccine, and as a primary vaccine for pediatric use including in infants

    Delayed pain decrease following M1 tDCS in spinal cord injury: A randomized controlled clinical trial

    Despite some encouraging findings for the treatment of neuropathic pain in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) directed to the primary motor cortex (M1) has faced some mixed results. Prior to translating this technology to clinical care, consistent results and durable effects need to be found. We, therefore, aimed to assess the direct and long-term effects of tDCS on pain following SCI.We performed a two-phase randomized sham-controlled clinical trial where patients received 5 days of tDCS followed by a 3-month follow-up period (Phase I); then, Phase II consisted of 10 days of tDCS with an 8-week follow-up period. We assessed the level of pain with the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Patients' quality of life and life satisfaction were also evaluated.33 patients were enrolled in Phase I and 9 in Phase II. We observed a treatment effect at 1-week follow-up for Phase I and at 4-week follow-up for Phase II. The overall level of pain was significantly lower for the active group, as compared to sham, in Phase II.Our exploratory study shows that tDCS does seem to be a promising tool to manage pain in patients with SCI and repeated stimulation sessions are needed to induce long-lasting effects.     What should I do and who’s to blame?:A cross-national study on youth’s attitudes and beliefs in times of COVID-19

    The COVID-19 crisis has had a major impact on youth. This study examined factors associated with youth's attitudes towards their government's response to the pandemic and their blaming of individuals from certain risk groups, ethnic backgrounds, and countries or regions. In a sample of 5,682 young adults (Mage = 22) from 14 countries, lower perceived burden due to COVID-19, more collectivistic and less individualistic values, and more empathy were associated with more positive attitudes towards the government and less blaming of individuals of certain groups. Youth's social identification with others in the pandemic mediated these associations in the same direction, apart from the COVID-19 burden on attitudes, which had a positive indirect effect. No evidence of country-level moderation was found
