    Leopard density and determinants of space use in a farming landscape in South Africa

    Protected areas are traditionally the foundation of conservation strategy, but land not formally protected is of particular importance for the conservation of large carnivores because of their typically wide-ranging nature. In South Africa, leopard (Panthera pardus) population decreases are thought to be occurring in areas of human development and intense negative interactions, but research is biased towards protected areas, with quantitative information on population sizes and trends in non-protected areas severely lacking. Using Spatially Explicit Capture-Recapture and occupancy techniques including 10 environmental and anthropogenic covariates, we analysed camera trap data from commercial farmland in South Africa where negative human-wildlife interactions are reported to be high. Our findings demonstrate that leopards persist at a moderate density (2.21 /100km2) and exhibit signs of avoidance from areas where lethal control measures are implemented. This suggests leopards have the potential to navigate mixed mosaic landscapes effectively, enhancing their chances of long-term survival and coexistence with humans. Mixed mosaics of agriculture that include crops, game and livestock farming should be encouraged and, providing lethal control is not ubiquitous in the landscape, chains of safer spaces should permit vital landscape connectivity.     Avaliação da sustentabilidade da suinocultura: um estudo em Santa Catarina, Brasil

    This study aimed to identify the sustainability practices of pig creation on rural properties in the West region of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The analysis included the system of sustainability indicators in pig farming. Although managers comply with the regulations and legislation, there are practical difficulties related to the destination of production waste, water use, expenditure controls, and social interaction. The sustainability analysis allowed investigating 30 properties and using a scale of 0-10 points, rate factors related to organizational, social, and environmental practices. Nine rural properties had a general performance, indicating characteristics of in search for sustainability, while 21 obtained a performance between 2.5 and 5.0 points, indicating fragilities in organizational, environmental, and social practices. It highlights the importance of analyzing sustainability indicators as a mechanism to control and implement better practices to assist in the search for sustainable development.O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar práticas sustentáveis de produção de suínos em áreas rurais da região oeste do estado de Santa Catarina no Brasil. Foi analisado o sistema de indicadores de sustentabilidade na suinocultura. Embora os gestores cumpram regras e regulamentos, existem dificuldades práticas com a alocação de resíduos de produção, consumo de água, controle de gastos e interações sociais. A análise de sustentabilidade nos permite pegar um total de 30 propriedades e usar uma escala de 0 a 10 pontos para avaliar fatores relacionados a práticas organizacionais, sociais e ambientais. Nove propriedades rurais obtiveram pontuação geral indicando as características de busca do desenvolvimento sustentável, enquanto 21 pontuaram entre 2,5 e 5,0, indicando a fragilidade das práticas organizacionais, ambientais e sociais. Salienta a importância da análise de indicadores de sustentabilidade como mecanismo de controle e implementação de melhores práticas para moderar o desenvolvimento sustentável

    Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) survey of the Antarctic shag (Leucocarbo bransfieldensis) breeding colony at Harmony Point, Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands

    Monitored seabird populations—useful sentinels of marine ecosystem health—have been declining worldwide at a rapid pace. Yet, lack of reliable long-term monitoring data constrains assessment of the conservation status of many seabird populations. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have the potential to increase survey efficiency and count precision of seabird populations, especially where time constraints or inaccessible terrain, such as sea stacks, limit meaningful ground-based surveys. Furthermore, tremendous potential exists to combine fine-scale spatially integrated habitat mapping obtained from UAV images with occupancy to unravel how abiotic factors such as topography affect animal populations. In late December 2018, we used an UAV to create a georeferenced orthomosaic image and digital elevation model (DEM) from which we determined the size of the Antarctic shag (Leucocarbo bransfieldensis) breeding colony at Harmony Point, Nelson Island, South Shetland Islands. Our population estimate of 69 breeding pairs is approximately double that reported for the early 2000s and the highest count since the late 1980s. Most nests were located 10 to 20 m above sea level, on relatively shallow gradients that predominantly faced southeast. While it is difficult to compare historical ground-based counts with the UAV-derived estimates presented here, our new data provide robust baseline information for future monitoring of the colony population size using comparable survey methods.     TECNOLOGIA NA INFÂNCIA

    O tema apresentado por nós, alunos, têm se feito muito presente em nosso cotidiano, e consideramos uma forma de mostrar aos pais o quão bem ou mal as tecnologias atuais fazem aos seus filhos. A partir deste projeto, podemos perceber diferentes opiniões, vindas de profissionais da área, pais e claro, crianças. Depois de buscar informações, conversar com pessoas que mantém contato com crianças que possuem idade propícia para começar a se interessar por aparelhos eletrônicos, e fazer entrevistas com profissionais relacionados à essa área, chegamos a algumas conclusões importantes que serão apresentadas de forma clara. Nosso principal objetivo, como já citado acima, é alertar os adultos, mas principalmente pais sobre os benefícios e os malefícios que atecnologia, de modo geral, pode trazer. Buscamos, também, formas de cuidado referente ao uso da mesma, apresentando maneiras de não proibir as crianças de usá-la, mas de controlar esse uso. Concluo que para apresentar nosso projeto de forma clara e de fácil entendimento, usaríamos de um tempo curto, chegando ao máximo de 15 minutos, abrangendo a apresentação de um site que está sendo feito pelos integrantes deste grupo, e também, uma explicação completa sobre o tema, sobrando um tempo, para no final, ser possível tirar dúvidas das pessoas presentes

    Perinatal maternal dietary supplementation of omega 3-fatty acids transiently affects bone marrow microenvironment, osteoblast and osteoclast formation, and bone mass in male offspring

    It is increasingly evident that micronutrient environment experienced before birth and in infancy is important for achieving optimal bone mass by adolescence and maintaining bone health. This study determined whether maternal supplementation with ω3-polyunsaturated fatty acids (n3FA) improved offspring bone growth and adult bone mass. Female rats were fed a diet containing 0.1% (control, n = 10) or 1% (n3FA, n = 11) docosahexanoic acid (DHA) during pregnancy and lactation. Offspring were weaned onto a control rat chow diet. Tibial growth plate and metaphysis structure, osteoblast/osteoclast density and differentiation, and gene expression were assessed in offspring at 3 wk (weaning), 6 wk (adolescent), and 3 months (adult). Maternal n3FA supplementation elevated offspring plasma n3FA levels at 3 and 6 wk. Although total growth plate heights were unaffected at any age, the resting zone thickness was increased in both male and female offspring at 3 wk. In n3FA males, but not females, bone trabecular number and thickness were increased at 3 wk but not other ages. The wk 3 n3FA males also exhibited an increased bone volume, an increased osteoblast but decreased osteoclast density, and lower expression of osteoclastogenic cytokines receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand, TNF-α, and IL-6. No effects were seen at 6 wk or 3 months in either sex. Thus, perinatal n3FA supplementation is associated with increased bone formation, decreased resorption, and a higher bone mass in males, but not in females, at weaning; these effects do not persist into adolescence and adulthood and are unlikely to produce lasting improvements in bone health.Laura Fong, Beverly S.     Human Milk Banking-Facts and Issues to Resolve

    The number of human milk banks is increasing worldwide. Although the beneficial effects of feeding premature infants with their mother’s milk are well documented, less is known about the effects of feeding these infants with pasteurized donor milk. We propose a randomized trial comparing the effects of a 100% human milk-based diet (human milk supplemented with a human milk-derived fortifier) and a diet (partially) based on bovine milk. In theory, human milk has a beneficial effect on various aspects of human physiology, most of which become apparent after infancy. We therefore propose an extensive follow-up program that takes this aspect into consideration. Other issues concerning the practice of human milk banks need to be addressed as well as optimization of the feeding strategies for preterm infants

    Droplet Size Impact on Efficacy of a Dicamba-plus-Glyphosate Mixture

    Chemical weed control remains a widely used component of integrated weed management strategies because of its cost-effectiveness and rapid removal of crop pests. Additionally, dicamba-plus-glyphosate mixtures are a commonly recommended herbicide combination to combat herbicide resistance, specifically in recently commercially released dicamba-tolerant soybean and cotton. However, increased spray drift concerns and antagonistic interactions require that the application process be optimized to maximize biological efficacy while minimizing environmental contamination potential. Field research was conducted in 2016, 2017, and 2018 across three locations (Mississippi, Nebraska, and North Dakota) for a total of six site-years. The objectives were to characterize the efficacy of a range of droplet sizes [150 μm (Fine) to 900 μm (Ultra Coarse)] using a dicamba-plus-glyphosate mixture and to create novel weed management recommendations utilizing pulse-width modulation (PWM) sprayer technology. Results across pooled site-years indicated that a droplet size of 395 μm (Coarse) maximized weed mortality from a dicamba-plus-glyphosate mixture at 94 L ha–1. However, droplet size could be increased to 620 μm (Extremely Coarse) to maintain 90% of the maximum weed mortality while further mitigating particle drift potential. Although generalized droplet size recommendations could be created across site-years, optimum droplet sizes within each site-year varied considerably and may be dependent on weed species, geographic location, weather conditions, and herbicide resistance(s) present in the field. The precise, site-specific application of a dicamba-plus-glyphosate mixture using the results of this research will allow applicators to more effectively utilize PWM sprayers, reduce particle drift potential, maintain biological efficacy, and reduce the selection pressure for the evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds

    Effects of Exercise Training on Circulating and Skeletal Muscle Renin-Angiotensin System in Chronic Heart Failure Rats

    Background: Accumulated evidence shows that the ACE-AngII-AT1 axis of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is markedly activated in chronic heart failure (CHF). Recent studies provide information that Angiotensin (Ang)-(1-7), a metabolite of AngII, counteracts the effects of AngII. However, this balance between AngII and Ang-(1-7) is still little understood in CHF. We investigated the effects of exercise training on circulating and skeletal muscle RAS in the ischemic model of CHF.Methods/Main Results: Male Wistar rats underwent left coronary artery ligation or a Sham operation. They were divided into four groups: 1) Sedentary Sham (Sham-S), 2) exercise-trained Sham (Sham-Ex), sedentary CHF (CHF-S), and exercise-trained CHF (CHF-Ex). Angiotensin concentrations and ACE and ACE2 activity in the circulation and skeletal muscle (soleus and plantaris) were quantified. Skeletal muscle ACE and ACE2 protein expression, and AT1, AT2, and Mas receptor gene expression were also evaluated. CHF reduced ACE2 serum activity. Exercise training restored ACE2 and reduced ACE activity in CHF. Exercise training reduced plasma AngII concentration in both Sham and CHF rats and increased the Ang-(1-7)/AngII ratio in CHF rats. CHF and exercise training did not change skeletal muscle ACE and ACE2 activity and protein expression. CHF increased AngII levels in both soleus and plantaris muscle, and exercise training normalized them. Exercise training increased Ang-(1-7) in the plantaris muscle of CHF rats. the AT1 receptor was only increased in the soleus muscle of CHF rats, and exercise training normalized it.
