    Using Debated Definitions of Affordances for A Qualitative Discussion of Campus Affordances

    The goal of human factors is to examine and improve the relationship between individuals and their environment. This presentation will be a qualitative review and discussion of everyday environmental cues and affordances located around the University of Central Florida campus. The goal will be to discuss the relationship between the design of perceptual affordances and the user’s interpretation of the object\u27s intention. In general, affordances explain how perception guides an individual to respond to an object or situation. The theory of affordances is widely debated in the literature. As a result, two definitions of affordances will be compared and contrasted. The main arguments of interest are the classic approach to affordances (Gibson, 1977) and the modern approach (Stoffregen, 2003). Gibson coined the term “affordances” and argued that objects have action potential with an inherent meaning and that the environment offers something to the person. Stoffregen, on the other hand, has argued that there are emergent properties in the human-environment system that result in behavior and that objects have no inherent meaning. Examples of affordances will be explained, compared, and contrasted under both viewpoints. Additionally, several examples of campus affordances will be shown that demonstrate good and poor design. The design aspect of affordances will be examined with Norman’s (1988, 1999, 2002) approach. Norman referred to affordances as “perceived affordances” and argued that the designer of objects concerns himself and controls the perceived affordances of the system. Norman urged for the usability of objects, including objects that have never been seen before by the user. Suggestions for design improvement will be discussed. Overall, the environment may be designed in ways that afford certain actions, but it is up to the individual to perceive the environmental cue and the intended action. I will argue that the intended action should be evident to the individual and if what the user perceives and what the designer intended mismatch, this can result in poor design. In summation, this presentation will review the debates about defining an affordance, provide examples of affordances from the University of Central Florida campus and how these definitions would vary in describing objects, and make an argument about the design and usability of the objects

    Mouse all-cone retina models of Cav1.4 synaptopathy

    The voltage-gated calcium channel, Cav1.4 is localized to photoreceptor ribbon synapses and functions both in molecular organization of the synapse and in regulating release of synaptic vesicles. Mutations in Cav1.4 subunits typically present as either incomplete congenital stationary night blindness or a progressive cone-rod dystrophy in humans. We developed a cone-rich mammalian model system to further study how different Cav1.4 mutations affect cones. RPE65 R91W KI; Nrl KO “Conefull” mice were crossed to Cav1.4 α1F or α2ÎŽ4 KO mice to generate the “Conefull:α1F KO” and “Conefull:α2ÎŽ4 KO” lines. Animals were assessed using a visually guided water maze, electroretinogram (ERG), optical coherence tomography (OCT), and histology. Mice of both sexes and up to six-months of age were used. Conefull: α1F KO mice could not navigate the visually guided water maze, had no b-wave in the ERG, and the developing all-cone outer nuclear layer reorganized into rosettes at the time of eye opening with degeneration progressing to 30% loss by 2-months of age. In comparison, the Conefull: α2ÎŽ4 KO mice successfully navigated the visually guided water maze, had a reduced amplitude b-wave ERG, and the development of the all-cone outer nuclear layer appeared normal although progressive degeneration with 10% loss by 2-months of age was observed. In summary, new disease models for studying congenital synaptic diseases due to loss of Cav1.4 function have been created

    Comparing the Cognitive Screening Tools: MMSE and SLUMS

    Practitioners have long relied upon the Mini Mental Status Exam (MMSE) to quickly assess cognitive functioning in older adults. The Saint Louis University Mental Status (SLUMS) exam possesses many potential psychometric advantages, however data on the relationship between scores on the SLUMS and MMSE has yet to be established. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to establish comparative norms between the MMSE and the SLUMS examinations. The current study hypothesized that participants would score lower on the SLUMS than the MMSE, with adults exhibiting higher levels of cognitive reserve, as measured by educational attainment, having a greater difference between the test scores. A total of 118 individuals (96 female, 21 male) with an age range from 41 to 96 (M=80.03, SD=8.71) with an average educational attainment of 14.97 years (SD= 2.68), completed both tests. Results indicate a significant difference between the mean SLUMS and MMSE scores (p\u3c.001), as well as a significant difference between those in assisted and independent living environments (p\u3c.001). The evidence did not support the cognitive reserve hypothesis. Implications and suggestions for future research will be discussed

    Liposomal binuclear Ir(III)–Cu(II) coordination compounds with phosphino-fluoroquinolone conjugates for human prostate carcinoma treatment

    [Image: see text] Novel heteronuclear Ir(III)–Cu(II) coordination compounds ([Ir(η(5)-Cp*)Cl(2)Pcfx-Cu(phen)](NO(3))·1.75(CH(3)OH)·0.75(H(2)O) (1), [Ir(η(5)-Cp*)Cl(2)Pnfx-Cu(phen)](NO(3))·1.75(CH(3)OH)·0.75(H(2)O) (2), [Ir(η(5)-Cp*)Cl(2)Plfx-Cu(phen)](NO(3))·1.3(H(2)O)·1.95(CH(3)OH) (3), [Ir(η(5)-Cp*)Cl(2)Psfx-Cu(phen)] (4)) bearing phosphines derived from fluoroquinolones, namely, sparfloxacin (Hsfx), ciprofloxacin (Hcfx), lomefloxacin (Hlfx), and norfloxacin (Hnfx), have been synthesized and studied as possible anticancer chemotherapeutics. All compounds have been characterized by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), a number of spectroscopic methods (i.e., IR, fluorescence, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR)), cyclic voltammetry, variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements, and X-ray diffractometry. The coordination geometry of Ir(III) in all complexes adopts a characteristic piano-stool geometry with the η(5)-coordinated and three additional sites occupied by two chloride and phosphine ligands, while Cu(II) ions in complexes 1 and 2 form a distorted square-pyramidal coordination geometry, and in complex 3, the coordination geometry around Cu(II) ions is a distorted octahedron. Interestingly, the crystal structure of [Ir(η(5)-Cp*)Cl(2)Plfx-Cu(phen)] features the one-dimensional (1D) metal–organic polymer. Liposomes loaded with redox-active and fluorescent [Ir(η(5)-Cp*)Cl(2)Pcfx-Cu(phen)] (1L) have been prepared to increase water solubility and minimize serious systemic side effects. It has been proven, by confocal microscopy and an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis, that the liposomal form of compound 1 can be effectively accumulated inside human lung adenocarcinoma and human prostate carcinoma cells with selective localization in nuclei. A cytometric analysis showed dominance of apoptosis over the other cell death types. Furthermore, the investigated nanoformulations induced changes in the cell cycle, leading to S phase arrest in a dose-dependent manner.     Mutual influence of selenium nanoparticles and FGF2-STABÂź on biocompatible properties of collagen/chitosan 3D scaffolds : in vitro and ex ovo evaluation

    In a biological system, nanoparticles (NPs) may interact with biomolecules. Specifically, the adsorption of proteins on the nanoparticle surface may influence both the nanoparticles' and proteins' overall bio-reactivity. Nevertheless, our knowledge of the biocompatibility and risk of exposure to nanomaterials is limited. Here, in vitro and ex ovo biocompatibility of naturally based crosslinked freeze-dried 3D porous collagen/chitosan scaffolds, modified with thermostable fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2-STABŸ), to enhance healing and selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) to provide antibacterial activity, were evaluated. Biocompatibility and cytotoxicity were tested in vitro using normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) with scaffolds and SeNPs and FGF2-STABŸ solutions. Metabolic activity assays indicated an antagonistic effect of SeNPs and FGF2-STABŸ at high concentrations of SeNPs. The half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of SeNPs for NHDF was 18.9 ”g/ml and IC80 was 5.6 ”g/ml. The angiogenic properties of the scaffolds were monitored ex ovo using a chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) assay and the cytotoxicity of SeNPs over IC80 value was confirmed. Furthermore, the positive effect of FGF2-STABŸ at very low concentrations (0.01 ”g/ml) on NHDF metabolic activity was observed. Based on detailed in vitro testing, the optimal concentrations of additives in the scaffolds were determined, specifically 1 ”g/ml of FGF2-STABŸ and 1 ”g/ml of SeNPs. The scaffolds were further subjected to antimicrobial tests, where an increase in selenium concentration in the collagen/chitosan scaffolds increased the antibacterial activity. This work highlights the antimicrobial ability and biocompatibility of newly developed crosslinked collagen/chitosan scaffolds involving FGF2-STABŸ and SeNPs. Moreover, we suggest that these sponges could be used as scaffolds for growing cells in systems with low mechanical loading in tissue engineering, especially in dermis replacement, where neovascularization is a crucial parameter for successful skin regeneration. Due to their antimicrobial properties, these scaffolds are also highly promising for tissue replacement requiring the prevention of infection

    Small firms and patenting revisited

    In order to observe a patent application at the firm level two conditions need to be met: new products need to be of patentable quality, which depends both on the degree of novelty of innovations and on the total number (portfolio) of innovations; and the benefits of patents need to be higher than the costs of owning them. Analyzing the patent propensity of small and large UK firms using a novel innovation-level survey (the SIPU survey) linked to Community Innovation Survey data we find that when we consider the whole innovation portfolio smaller firms do patent less than larger firms. However, using data on individual innovations, we find that smaller firms are no less likely to patent any specific innovation than larger firms. We argue that size differences in the probability to patent relate primarily to the ‘portfolio effect’, i.e. larger firms generate more innovations than smaller firms and therefore are more likely to create one or more which are patentable. As for the decision to patent a patentable innovation, we find that cost barriers, more than issues of innovation quality or enforceability, deter small firms from patenting specific innovations. Measures to address the costs of patenting for smaller firms – perhaps by considering patents as eligible costs for R&D tax credits – and/or subsidizing SMEs’ participation in IP litigation schemes may both encourage patent use by smaller firms

    Training adults and children with an autism spectrum disorder to be compliant with a clinical dental assessment using a TEACCH-based approach

    The specific neuropsychological and sensory profile found in persons with autism spectrum disorders complicate dental procedures and as a result of this, most are treated under general anesthesia or unnecessary sedation. The main goal of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a short treatment and education of autistic and related communication-handicapped children-based intervention program (five sessions) to facilitate a 10-component oral assessment in children (n = 38, aged 4Âż9 years) and adults (n = 34, aged 19Âż41) with autism spectrum disorder (with or without associated intellectual disability). The assessment ranges from entering into the examination room to the evaluation of the dental occlusion. There were statistically significant differences in the number of components reached and in compliance before and after the training program

    Young people's views on the potential use of telemedicine consultations for sexual health: results of a national survey

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Young people are disproportionately affected by sexually transmissible infections in Australia but face barriers to accessing sexual health services, including concerns over confidentiality and, for some, geographic remoteness. A possible innovation to increase access to services is the use of telemedicine.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Young people's (aged 16-24) pre-use views on telephone and webcam consultations for sexual health were investigated through a widely-advertised national online survey in Australia. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the study sample and chi-square, Mann-Whitney U test, or t-tests were used to assess associations. Multinomial logistic regression was used to explore the association between the three-level outcome variable (first preference in person, telephone or webcam, and demographic and behavioural variables); odds ratios and 95%CI were calculated using in person as the reference category. Free text responses were analysed thematically.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 662 people completed the questionnaire. Overall, 85% of the sample indicated they would be willing to have an in-person consultation with a doctor, 63% a telephone consultation, and 29% a webcam consultation. Men, respondents with same-sex partners, and respondents reporting three or more partners in the previous year were more willing to have a webcam consultation. Imagining they lived 20 minutes from a doctor, 83% of respondents reported that their first preference would be an in-person consultation with a doctor; if imagining they lived two hours from a doctor, 51% preferred a telephone consultation. The main objections to webcam consultations in the free text responses were privacy and security concerns relating to the possibility of the webcam consultation being recorded, saved, and potentially searchable and retrievable online.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study is the first we are aware of that seeks the views of young people on telemedicine and access to sexual health services. Although only 29% of respondents were willing to have a webcam consultation, such a service may benefit youth who may not otherwise access a sexual health service. The acceptability of webcam consultations may be increased if medical clinics provide clear and accessible privacy policies ensuring that consultations will not be recorded or saved.</p

    Clinical and laboratory predictors of death in African children with features of severe malaria: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

    The criteria for defining severe malaria have evolved over the last 20 years. We aimed to assess the strength of association of death with features currently characterizing severe malaria through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Electronic databases (Medline, Embase, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge) were searched to identify publications including African children with severe malaria. PRISMA guidelines were followed. Selection was based on design (epidemiological, clinical and treatment studies), setting (Africa), participants (children &lt; 15 years old with severe malaria), outcome (survival/death rate), and prognostic indicators (clinical and laboratory features). Quality assessment was performed following the criteria of the 2011 Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (QUADAS-2). Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated for each study and prognostic indicator, and, when a test was assessed in at least two studies, pooled estimates of ORs were computed using fixed- or random-effects meta-analysis. A total of 601 articles were identified and screened and 30 publications were retained. Features with the highest pooled ORs were renal failure (5.96, 95% CI 2.93-12.11), coma score (4.83, 95% CI 3.11-7.5), hypoglycemia (4.59, 95% CI 2.68-7.89), shock (4.31, 95% CI 2.15-8.64), and deep breathing (3.8, 95% CI 3.29-4.39). Only half of the criteria had an OR &gt; 2. Features with the lowest pooled ORs were impaired consciousness (0.58, 95% CI 0.25-1.37), severe anemia (0.76, 95% CI 0.5- 1.13), and prostration (1.12, 95% CI 0.45-2.82). The findings of this meta-analysis show that the strength of association between the criteria defining severe malaria and death is quite variable for each clinical and/or laboratory feature (OR ranging from 0.58 to 5.96). This ranking allowed the identification of features weakly associated with death, such as impaired consciousness and prostration, which could assist to improve case definition, and thus optimize antimalarial treatment
