    Spatial effects of Fano resonance in local tunneling conductivity in vicinity of impurity on semiconductor surface

    We present the results of local tunneling conductivity spatial distribution detailed theoretical investigations in vicinity of impurity atom for a wide range of applied bias voltage. We observed Fano resonance in tunneling conductivity resulting from interference between resonant tunneling channel through impurity energy level and direct tunneling channel between the tunneling contact leads. We have found that interference between tunneling channels strongly modifies form of tunneling conductivity measured by the scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) depending on the distance value from the impurity.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Fiber-optical analogue of the event horizon

    The physics at the event horizon resembles the behavior of waves in moving media. Horizons are formed where the local speed of the medium exceeds the wave velocity. We use ultrashort pulses in microstructured optical fibers to demonstrate the formation of an artificial event horizon in optics. We observed a classical optical effect, the blue-shifting of light at a white-hole horizon. We also show by theoretical calculations that such a system is capable of probing the quantum effects of horizons, in particular Hawking radiation.Comment: MEDIA EMBARGO.     The role of Cahn and Sivers effects in Deep Inelastic Scattering

    The role of intrinsic \bfk_\perp in inclusive and semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering processes (phX\ell p \to \ell h X) is studied with exact kinematics within QCD parton model at leading order; the dependence of the unpolarized cross section on the azimuthal angle between the leptonic and the hadron production planes (Cahn effect) is compared with data and used to estimate the average values of kk_\perp both in quark distribution and fragmentation functions. The resulting picture is applied to the description of the weighted single spin asymmetry AUTsin(ϕπϕS)A_{UT}^{\sin(\phi_\pi - \phi_S)} recently measured by the HERMES collaboration at DESY; this allows to extract some simple models for the quark Sivers functions. These are compared with the Sivers functions which succeed in describing the data on transverse single spin asymmetries in \pup p \to \pi X processes; the two sets of functions are not inconsistent. The extracted Sivers functions give predictions for the COMPASS measurement of AUTsin(ϕπϕS)A_{UT}^{\sin(\phi_\pi - \phi_S)} in agreement with recent preliminary data, while their contribution to HERMES AULsinϕπA_{UL}^{\sin\phi_\pi} is computed and found to be small.     \ua9 2024 The Royal Society of Chemistry.Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) arise from the Maillard reaction between dicarbonyls and proteins, nucleic acids, or specific lipids. Notably, AGEs are linked to aging and implicated in various disorders, spanning from cancer to neurodegenerative diseases. While dicarbonyls like methylglyoxal preferentially target arginine residues, lysine-derived AGEs, such as N(6)-(1-carboxymethyl)lysine (CML) and N(6)-(1-carboxyethyl)lysine (CEL), are also abundant. Predicting protein glycation in vivo proves challenging due to the intricate nature of glycation reactions. In vitro, glycation is difficult to control, especially in proteins that harbor multiple glycation-prone amino acids. α-Synuclein (aSyn), pivotal in Parkinson\u27s disease and synucleinopathies, has 15 lysine residues and is known to become glycated at multiple lysine sites. To understand the influence of glycation in specific regions of aSyn on its behavior, a strategy for site-specific glycated protein production is imperative. To fulfill this demand, we devised a synthetic route integrating solid-phase peptide synthesis, orthogonal protection of amino acid side-chain functionalities, and reductive amination strategies. This methodology yielded two disease-related N-terminal peptide fragments, each featuring five and six CML and CEL modifications, alongside a full-length aSyn protein containing a site-selective E46CEL modification. Our synthetic approach facilitates the broad introduction of glycation motifs at specific sites, providing a foundation for generating glycated forms of synucleinopathy-related and other disease-relevant proteins

    Starting from a continuum description, we study the non-equilibrium roughening of a thermal re-emission model for etching in one and two spatial dimensions. Using standard analytical techniques, we map our problem to a generalized version of an earlier non-local KPZ (Kardar-Parisi-Zhang) model. In 2+1 dimensions, the values of the roughness and the dynamic exponents calculated from our theory go like αz1 \alpha \approx z \approx 1 and in 1+1 dimensions, the exponents resemble the KPZ values for low vapor pressure, supporting experimental results.     Determination of Cytomegalovirus Prevalence and Glycoprotein B Genotypes Among Ulcerative Colitis Patients in Ahvaz, Iran

    Background: The human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a common pathogen which usually remains asymptomatic in the healthy adults; however, it can cause a symptomatic disease in the immunocompromised patients. The risk of infection with HCMV increases in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients as a result of receiving immunosuppressive agents. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and the glycoprotein B genotypes of HCMV among the patients with HCMV disease superimposed on an UC flare that required hospitalization in Imam Khomeini Hospital in Ahvaz, Iran, during 2010- 2012. Patients and Methods: In this case-control study, formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded intestinal tissue samples were taken from 98 patients with UC disease including 53 males and 45 females (mean age ± standard deviation, 38.95 ± 17.93) and 67 control patients with noninflammatory disease who were referred to Imam Khomeini Hospital during 2010-2012. Detection of HCMV genome in intestinal samples was carried out by seminested polymerase chain reaction. Glycoprotein B genotypes were determined by sequencing. Results: Among 98 patients with UC, only 12 (12.2%) patients were positive for HCMV genome, while the HCMV genome was not detected in any of the controls. (P = 0.002). The distribution of HCMV gB genotypes in 12 CMV-positive UC patients was as follow: gB1, 11 (91.7%) and gB3, 1 (8.3%). The most prevalent genotype in CMV-positive UC patients was gB1. Conclusions: In this study, high prevalence of 91.7% HCMV gB1 genotype was predominant among HCMV-positive UC patients, which suggests that there might be an association between HCMV gB genotype 1 and UC disease

    Clinical Definitions of Pertussis: Summary of a Global Pertussis Initiative Roundtable Meeting, February 2011

    Existing clinical case definitions of pertussis are decades old and based largely on clinical presentation in infants and children, yet an increasing burden is borne by adolescents and adults who may manifest distinct signs/symptoms. Therefore, a “one-size-fits-all” clinical case definition is no longer appropriate. Seeking to improve pertussis diagnosis, the Global Pertussis Initiative (GPI) developed an algorithm that delineates the signs/symptoms of pertussis most common to 3 age groups: 0–3 months, 4 months to 9 years, and ≥10 years. These case definitions are based on clinical presentation alone, but do include recommendations on laboratory diagnostics. Until pertussis can be accurately diagnosed, its burden will remain underestimated, making the introduction of epidemiologically appropriate preventive strategies difficult. The proposed definitions are intended to be widely applicable and to encourage the expanded use of laboratory diagnostics. Determination of their utility and their sensitivity and/or specificity versus existing case definitions is required
