Quasi-linearly polarized hybrid modes in tapered and metal-coated tips with circular apertures: understanding the functionality of aperture tips
In this study, we investigate analytically and experimentally the roles of quasi-linearly polarized (LP), hybrid, plasmonic and photonic modes in optical detection and excitation with aperture tips in scanning near-field optical microscopy. Aperture tips are tapered and metal-coated optical fibers where small circular apertures are made at the apex. In aperture tips, there exist plasmonic modes that are bound at the interface of the metal cladding to the inner dielectric fiber and photonic modes that are guided in the area of the increased index in the dielectric fiber core. The fundamental photonic mode, although excited by the free-space Gaussian beam, experiences cutoff and turns into an evanescent mode. The photonic mode also becomes lossier than the plasmonic mode toward the tip aperture, and its power decay due to absorption and reflection is expected to be at least 10â9. In contrast, the fundamental plasmonic mode has no cutoff and thus reaches all the way to the tip aperture. Due to the non-adiabaticity of both modes' propagations through the taper below a core radius of 600 nm, there occurs coupling between the modes. The transmission efficiency of the plasmonic mode, including the coupling efficiency and the propagation loss, is expected to be about 10â6 that is at least 3 orders of magnitude larger than that of the photonic mode. Toward the tip aperture, the longitudinal field of the photonic mode becomes stronger than the transverse ones while the transverse fields always dominate for the plasmonic mode. Experimentally, we obtain polarization resolved images of the near-field at the tip aperture and compare with the x- and y-components of the fundamental quasi-LP plasmonic and photonic modes. The results show that not only the pattern but also the intensity ratios of the x- and y-components of the aperture near-field match with that of the fundamental plasmonic mode. Consequently, we conclude that only the plasmonic mode reaches the tip aperture and thus governs the near-field interaction outside the tip aperture. Our conclusion remains valid for all aperture tips regardless of the cladding metal type that mainly influences the total transmission efficiency of the aperture tip
Experimental demonstration of a suspended diffractively coupled optical cavity
All-reflective optical systems are under consideration for future gravitational wave detector topologies. One approach in proposed designs is to use diffraction gratings as input couplers for FabryâPerot cavities. We present an experimental demonstration of a fully suspended diffractively coupled cavity and investigate the use of conventional PoundâDreverâHall length sensing and control techniques to maintain the required operating condition
Power-recycled michelson interferometer with a 50/50 grating beam splitter
We designed and fabricated an all-reflective 50/50 beam splitter based on a dielectric grating. This beam splitter was used to set up a power-recycled Michelson interferometer with a finesse of about FPR â 880. Aspects of the diffractive beam splitter as well as of the interferometer design are discussed.DFG/SFB/TR
Mechanical Q-factor measurements on a test mass with a structured surface
We present mechanical Q-factors (quality factors) of a crystalline quartz test mass with a nano-structured surface, measured in the temperature regime from 5 to 300 K. The nano-structure was a grating with a period of 2 mu m and a depth of about 0.1 mu m. Comparative measurements were performed on the plain substrate and on the structured test mass with different numbers of SiO2/Ta2O5 coating layers. The measurements at different stages of the test mass fabrication process show that the surface distortion induced by the nanostructure does not severely lower the mechanical Q-factor of the substrate. Damping due to a multi-layer coating stack was found to be orders of magnitude higher. The results provide vital information concerning the potential usage of low-thermal noise nano-structured test masses in future generations of high-precision laser interferometers and in current attempts to measure quantum effects of macroscopic mirror oscillators.DFG/SFB/Transregio
A resonant-term-based model including a nascent disk, precession, and oblateness: application to GJ 876
Investigations of two resonant planets orbiting a star or two resonant
satellites orbiting a planet often rely on a few resonant and secular terms in
order to obtain a representative quantitative description of the system's
dynamical evolution. We present a semianalytic model which traces the orbital
evolution of any two resonant bodies in a first- through fourth-order
eccentricity or inclination-based resonance dominated by the resonant and
secular arguments of the user's choosing. By considering the variation of
libration width with different orbital parameters, we identify regions of phase
space which give rise to different resonant ''depths,'' and propose methods to
model libration profiles. We apply the model to the GJ 876 extrasolar planetary
system, quantify the relative importance of the relevant resonant and secular
contributions, and thereby assess the goodness of the common approximation of
representing the system by just the presumably dominant terms. We highlight the
danger in using ''order'' as the metric for accuracy in the orbital solution by
revealing the unnatural libration centers produced by the second-order, but not
first-order, solution, and by demonstrating that the true orbital solution lies
somewhere ''in-between'' the third- and fourth-order solutions. We also present
formulas used to incorporate perturbations from central-body oblateness and
precession, and a protoplanetary or protosatellite thin disk with gaps, into a
resonant system. We quantify these contributions to the GJ 876 system, and
thereby highlight the conditions which must exist for multi-planet exosystems
to be significantly influenced by such factors. We find that massive enough
disks may convert resonant libration into circulation; such disk-induced
signatures may provide constraints for future studies of exoplanet systems.Comment: 39 pages of body text, 21 figures, 5 tables, 1 appendix, accepted for

Risk profiles and one-year outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation in India: Insights from the GARFIELD-AF Registry.
BACKGROUND: The Global Anticoagulant Registry in the FIELD-Atrial Fibrillation (GARFIELD-AF) is an ongoing prospective noninterventional registry, which is providing important information on the baseline characteristics, treatment patterns, and 1-year outcomes in patients with newly diagnosed non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This report describes data from Indian patients recruited in this registry. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 52,014 patients with newly diagnosed AF were enrolled globally; of these, 1388 patients were recruited from 26 sites within India (2012-2016). In India, the mean age was 65.8 years at diagnosis of NVAF. Hypertension was the most prevalent risk factor for AF, present in 68.5% of patients from India and in 76.3% of patients globally (P < 0.001). Diabetes and coronary artery disease (CAD) were prevalent in 36.2% and 28.1% of patients as compared with global prevalence of 22.2% and 21.6%, respectively (P < 0.001 for both). Antiplatelet therapy was the most common antithrombotic treatment in India. With increasing stroke risk, however, patients were more likely to receive oral anticoagulant therapy [mainly vitamin K antagonist (VKA)], but average international normalized ratio (INR) was lower among Indian patients [median INR value 1.6 (interquartile range {IQR}: 1.3-2.3) versus 2.3 (IQR 1.8-2.8) (P < 0.001)]. Compared with other countries, patients from India had markedly higher rates of all-cause mortality [7.68 per 100 person-years (95% confidence interval 6.32-9.35) vs 4.34 (4.16-4.53), P < 0.0001], while rates of stroke/systemic embolism and major bleeding were lower after 1 year of follow-up. CONCLUSION: Compared to previously published registries from India, the GARFIELD-AF registry describes clinical profiles and outcomes in Indian patients with AF of a different etiology. The registry data show that compared to the rest of the world, Indian AF patients are younger in age and have more diabetes and CAD. Patients with a higher stroke risk are more likely to receive anticoagulation therapy with VKA but are underdosed compared with the global average in the GARFIELD-AF. Fabrication influences on deep-ultraviolet tungsten wire grid polarizers manufactured by double patterning
Substantial discrepancies are commonly observed when comparing the predicted and measured optical performance of deep-ultraviolet tungsten wire grid polarizers. Particularly, the extinction ratio is strongly impaired. Therefore, we investigate major differences between assumed and actual achieved properties regarding geometry and material of the grating structure as the origin of theses discrepancies. We find an improvement potential for the extinction ratio of one order of magnitude by improving the material and a factor of four by improving the geometry. Our results allow for a purposeful revision of fabrication processes and will therefore significantly contribute to the improvement of deep-ultraviolet wire grid polarizers
