Commitment system theory:The evolving structure of commitments to multiple targets
Employees form commitments to multiple targets and the coordination of those multiple commitments has become a ubiquitous part of the contemporary workplace. However, commitments are still largely studied in isolation or in one-off combinations and current commitment theory does not account for the dynamic interrelationships among multiple commitments. To address this deficiency, we propose commitment system theory (CST). We draw upon general systems theory to depict commitment systems as malleable and interconnected structures. We present the defining elements by which commitment systems can be described and studied, develop theory regarding when commitment systems will diverge or converge over time, and discuss how taking a systems perspective resolves discrepant findings in the literature. Specifically, CST advances the commitment literature by offering an alternative perspective to explain how commitments behave as parts of larger systems. Specifically, CST accounts for (a) why and when commitments have synergistic, neutral, or conflicting inter-relationships and (b) the temporal dynamics of those inter-relationships as commitments develop, change, and dissipate. CST thus offers a new vocabulary and conceptual âtoolkitâ for understanding the evolving structure of commitments to multiple targets
The Czech adaptation of the Klein et alâs unidimensional targer-neutral scale of commitment
This study describes the process of translating, adapting and validating the Klein et alâs Unidimensional Target-neutral Scale of Commitment (KUT) into Czech. The KUT scale is a self-report scale that consists of four items. The scale was adapted using three independent translations into Czech, one back-translation into English by a native speaker, assessment by experts, and piloting in cognitive interviews with 13 respondents. The study also provides evidence on the scaleâs reliability and validity for measuring organizational commitment defined as a psychological bond with an organization. The analyses were based on data obtained from 811 Czech-speaking adults working for Czech organizations. Using ordinal structural equation models (SEM) estimated on the polychoric correlation matrices with the robust WLSMV estimator, the Czech adaptation of the KUT scale showed similar psychometric characteristics to the original English version. The Czech KUT scale is unidimensional and internally consistent. All items have high factor loadings. The scale is invariant across groups defined by gender, workload and the sector in which the organization operates. The convergent validity is supported by the fact that the organizational commitment measured by the Czech KUT scale relates positively to job satisfaction, self-rating of job performance, extra-role behaviour and negatively to turnover intention. The Czech KUT scale also proved incremental validity to job performance over job satisfaction measured by Job Descriptive Survey. Therefore, the scale is a valid instrument for measuring organizational commitment within the Czech-speaking population. It can be used for organizational surveys as well as for research within the organizations

FLOW ANALYSIS OF DIFFUSER-GETTER-DIFFUSER SYSTEMS
Tritium clean-up systems typically deploy gas processing technologies between stages of palladium-silver (Pd/Ag) diffusers/permeators. The number of diffusers positioned before and after a gas clean-up process to obtain optimal system performance will vary with feed gas inert composition. A simple method to analyze optimal diffuser configuration is presented. The method assumes equilibrium across the Pd/Ag tubes and system flows are limited by diffuser vacuum pump speeds preceding or following the clean-up process. A plot of system feed as a function of inert feed gas composition for various diffuser configuration allows selection of a diffuser configuration for maximum throughput based on feed gas composition
Negotiating daughterhood and strangerhood: retrospective accounts of serial migration
Most considerations of daughtering and mothering take for granted that the subjectivities of mothers and daughters are negotiated in contexts of physical proximity throughout daughtersâ childhoods. Yet many mothers and daughters spend periods separated from each other, sometimes across national borders. Globally, an increasing number of children experience life in transnational families.
This paper examines the retrospective narratives of four women who were serial migrants as children (whose parents migrated before they did) . It focuses on their accounts of the reunion with their mothers and how these fit with the ways in which they construct their mother-daughter relationships. We take a psychosocial approach by using a psychoanalytically-informed reading of these narratives to acknowledge the complexities of the attachments produced in the context of migration and to attend to the multi-layered psychodynamics of the resulting relationships. The paper argues that serial migration positioned many of the daughters in a conflictual emotional landscape from which they had to negotiate âstrangerhoodâ in the context of sadness at leaving people to whom they were attached in order to join their mothers (or parents). As a result, many were resistant to being positioned as daughters, doing daughtering and being mothered in their new homes
The Spitzer Interacting Galaxies Survey: A Mid-infrared Atlas of Star Formation
The Spitzer Interacting Galaxies Survey is a sample of 103 nearby galaxies in 48 systems, selected using association likelihoods and therefore free from disturbed morphology biases. All galaxies have been observed with Infrared Array Camera and MIPS 24 Îźm bands from the Spitzer Space Telescope. This catalog presents the global flux densities and colors of all systems and correlations between the interacting systems and their specific star formation rate (sSFR). This sample contains a wide variety of galaxy interactions with systems ranging in mass, mass ratios, and gas-content as well as interaction strength. This study seeks to identify the process of triggering star formation in galaxy interactions, therefore, we focus on the non-active galactic nucleus spiral galaxies only. From this subset of 70 spiral galaxies we have determined that this sample has enhanced sSFR compared to a sample of non-interacting field galaxies. Through optical data we have classified each system by "interaction strength"; the strongly interacting (Stage 4) galaxies have higher sSFR values than the weakly (Stage 2) and moderately (Stage 3) interacting systems. However, the Stage 2 and 3 systems have statistically identical sSFR properties, despite the lack of optical interaction signatures exhibited by the Stage 2 galaxies. We suggest that the similarity of sSFR in these stages could be a consequence of some of these Stage 2 systems actually being post-perigalactic and having had sufficient time for their tidal features to fade to undetectable levels. This interpretation is consistent with the correlation of sSFR with separation, which we have determined to have little variation up to 100 kpc
Microtubule depolymerization by the kinesin-8 motor Kip3p: a mathematical model
Proteins from the kinesin-8 family promote microtubule (MT) depolymerization,
a process thought to be important for the control of microtubule length in
living cells. In addition to this MT shortening activity, kinesin 8s are motors
that show plus-end directed motility on MTs. Here we describe a simple model
that incorporates directional motion and destabilization of the MT plus end by
kinesin 8. Our model quantitatively reproduces the key features of
length-vs-time traces for stabilized MTs in the presence of purified kinesin 8,
including length-dependent depolymerization. Comparison of model predictions
with experiments suggests that kinesin 8 depolymerizes processively, i.e., one
motor can remove multiple tubulin dimers from a stabilized MT. Fluctuations in
MT length as a function of time are related to depolymerization processivity.
We have also determined the parameter regime in which the rate of MT
depolymerization is length dependent: length-dependent depolymerization occurs
only when MTs are sufficiently short; this crossover is sensitive to the bulk

ISO LWS Spectroscopy of M82: A Unified Evolutionary Model
We present the first complete far-infrared spectrum (43 to 197 um) of M82,
the brightest infrared galaxy in the sky, taken with the Long Wavelength
Spectrometer of the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). We detected seven fine
structure emission lines, [OI] 63 and 145 um, [OIII] 52 and 88 um, [NII] 122
um, [NIII] 57 um and [CII] 158 um, and fit their ratios to a combination
starburst and photo-dissociation region (PDR) model. The best fit is obtained
with HII regions with n = 250 cm^{-3} and an ionization parameter of 10^{-3.5}
and PDRs with n = 10^{3.3} cm^{-3} and a far-ultraviolet flux of G_o =
10^{2.8}. We applied both continuous and instantaneous starburst models, with
our best fit being a 3-5 Myr old instantaneous burst model with a 100 M_o
cut-off. We also detected the ground state rotational line of OH in absorption
at 119.4 um. No excited level OH transitions are apparent, indicating that the
OH is almost entirely in its ground state with a column density ~ 4x10^{14}
cm^{-2}. The spectral energy distribution over the LWS wavelength range is well
fit with a 48 K dust temperature and an optical depth, tau_{Dust} proportional

Spatially valid proprioceptive cues improve the detection of a visual stimulus
Vision and proprioception are the main sensory modalities that convey hand location and direction of movement. Fusion of these sensory signals into a single robust percept is now well documented. However, it is not known whether these modalities also interact in the spatial allocation of attention, which has been demonstrated for other modality pairings. The aim of this study was to test whether proprioceptive signals can spatially cue a visual target to improve its detection. Participants were instructed to use a planar manipulandum in a forward reaching action and determine during this movement whether a near-threshold visual target appeared at either of two lateral positions. The target presentation was followed by a masking stimulus, which made its possible location unambiguous, but not its presence. Proprioceptive cues were given by applying a brief lateral force to the participantâs arm, either in the same direction (validly cued) or in the opposite direction (invalidly cued) to the on-screen location of the mask. The dⲠdetection rate of the target increased when the direction of proprioceptive stimulus was compatible with the location of the visual target compared to when it was incompatible. Output order and variability in free recall are linked to cognitive ability and hippocampal volume in elderly individuals.
Adapted from the work of Kahana and colleagues (e.g., Kahana, 1996), we present two measures of order of recall in neuropsychological free recall tests. These are the position on the study list of the first recalled item, and the degree of variability in the order in which items are reported at test (i.e., the temporal distance across the first four recalled items). We tested two hypotheses in separate experiments: (1) whether these measures predicted generalized cognitive ability, and (2) whether they predicted gray matter hippocampal volume. To test hypothesis 1, we conducted ordinal regression analyses on data from a group of 452 participants, aged 60 or above. Memory performance was measured with Rey's AVLT and generalized cognitive ability was measured with the MMSE test. To test hypothesis 2, we conducted a linear regression analysis on data from a sample of 79 cognitively intact individuals aged 60 or over. Memory was measured with the BSRT and hippocampal volume was extracted from MRI images. Results of Experiment 1 showed that the position of the first item recalled and the degree of output order variability correlated with MMSE scores only in the delayed test, but not in the immediate test. In Experiment 2, the degree of variability in the recall sequence of the delayed trial correlated (negatively) with hippocampal size. These findings confirm the importance of delayed primacy as a marker of cognitive ability, and are consistent with the idea that the hippocampus is involved in coding the temporal context of learned episodes
Vertical integration and firm boundaries : the evidence
Since Ronald H. Coase's (1937) seminal paper, a rich set of theories has been developed that deal with firm boundaries in vertical or inputâoutput structures. In the last twenty-five years, empirical evidence that can shed light on those theories also has been accumulating. We review the findings of empirical studies that have addressed two main interrelated questions: First, what types of transactions are best brought within the firm and, second, what are the consequences of vertical integration decisions for economic outcomes such as prices, quantities, investment, and profits. Throughout, we highlight areas of potential cross-fertilization and promising areas for future work
