    Einwicklung und Einsatz von ISI – ein GIS-Webdienst zur ressourcenschonenden Flächenplanung

    Das Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojekt „ISI“ stellt die Konzeption und Realisierung eines geodatenbasierten Web-Service als anwenderfreundliches Informations- und Kommunikationswerkzeug zur strategischen Flächenentwicklungsplanung dar. Die Anwendung des Web-Service bezieht sich insbesondere auf eine objektive und vergleichendanalytische Betrachtung verschiedener Szenarien zur kommunalen Flächenplanung. Gerade in gemeinsamer und kommunen-übergreifender Betrachtung flächenbezogener Fragestellungen liegen sehr große Potenziale einer ökologischen und ressourcenschonenden Planung. Durch das internetbasierte Planungsinstrument ISI kann die datenbasierte, interaktive Kommunikation und Diskussion in Planungsprozessen vereinfacht und damit die Entwicklung und Bewertung von Planungsalternativen auf eine bessere und nachvollziehbare Basis gestellt werden

    Contamination and Health Risk Assessment of Exposure to Heavy Metals in Soils from Informal E-Waste Recycling Site in Ghana

    The objective of this study is first, to investigate the level of heavy metals in soils from Agbogbloshie e-waste processing site (AEPS), the degree at which these heavy metals contaminate the area and finally, to assess the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risk of heavy metals on workers and residents in around the AEPS. 132 soil samples were collected from the study area and the samples analyzed for Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn heavy metals after appropriate preparations were made. Results of the analysis showed mean concentrations of Cd, Cr and Ni considered as carcinogenic were lower than permissible levels of Dutch and Canadian soil standards. Mean concentrations however of Cu, Pb and Zn were between 100% and 500% higher than the permissible levels. Assessment of the degree of Contamination indicated Ni<Ba<Co<Cr<Zn<Hg<Cu<Cd<Pb in an increasing order as contributing to the degree of contamination with according to the degree of contamination index the burning, dismantling, residential and commercial considered as very highly contaminated. The health risk analysis of individual heavy metals in soil indicated non-carcinogenic risk of Cr, Hg and Pb with hazard index above the safe level of 1 in the burning and dismantling areas and as such could trigger neurological and developmental disorders in children less than six (6) years

    Regional-biologische Schulverpflegung - Erstellung einer Broschüre zur Außer-Haus-Verpflegung

    Die Außer-Haus-Verpflegung von Kindern und Jugendlichen ist nachwie vor ein aktuelles Thema. Aus diesem Grund wurden im Rahmen des Bundesprogramms Ökologischer Landbau Modellprojekte zu diesem Thema eingeworben. Das Ziel war, mehr Bio in der Schulverpflegung und in Kindertagesstätten zu etablieren. Aus der Vielzahl von Vorschlägen wurden vier Modellprojekte ausgewählt, die die Einführung von Biokost in Schulen und Kindertagesstätten mit allen möglichen Fragen und Stolpersteinen aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln beleuchten. Als Projektstandorte wurden Hamburg, Berlin, Rhein-Main-Gebiet und der Schwalm-Eder-Kreis in Nordhessen ausgewählt. Die Ergebnisse aus den Projekten zeigen, wie vielseitig die Problematik, aber auch die Herangehensweise zur Lösung der Probleme sein kann

    NCF1 gene and pseudogene pattern: association with parasitic infection and autoimmunity

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Neutrophil cytosolic factor 1, p47<sup>phox </sup>(NCF1) is a component of the leukocyte NADPH oxidase complex mediating formation of reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI) which play an important role in host defense and autoimmunity. An individual genomic pattern of <it>ncf1 </it>and its two types of pseudogenes (reflected by the ΔGT/GTGT ratio) may influence the individual capacity to produce ROI.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>NCF1ΔGT/GTGT ratios were correlated with clinical parameters and ROI production during <it>Plasmodium falciparum </it>malaria and with susceptibility to the autoimmune disease multiple sclerosis (MS).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Among Gabonese children with severe malaria, ROI production from peripheral blood tended to be higher in individuals with a ΔGT/GTGT ratio ≤ 1:1. ΔGT/GTGT ratios were not associated with susceptibility to MS, but to age-of-onset among MS patients.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The genomic pattern of <it>NCF1 </it>and its pseudogenes might influence ROI production but only marginally influence susceptibility to and outcome of malaria and MS.</p

    A Multicenter Experience with Long-Acting Somatostatin Analogues in Patients with Congenital Hyperinsulinism

    Background/Aims: Congenital hyperinsulinism (CHI) is a rare disease characterized by recurrent severe hypoglycemia. In the diffuse form of CHI, pharmacotherapy is the preferred choice of treatment. Long-acting somatostatin analogues have been used in children as off-label medication. However, the efficacy, outcomes, and adverse effect profiles of long-acting somatostatin analogues have not been described in multicentered studies. The aim of this retrospective study is to summarize the experience with long-acting somatostatin analogues in a large group of children with CHI. Methods: Data were obtained retrospectively from 27 patients with CHI who received long-acting somatostatin analogues in 6 different centers in Europe. These included information on glycemic stability, auxology, and adverse effect profile in clinical follow-up assessments. Results: Blood glucose control improved in most patients (89%). No life-threatening side effects occurred. Thirteen patients (48%) experienced side effects; in 3 patients (11%), the side effects were the main reason for discontinuation of the treatment. The most frequent side effect was elevated liver enzymes (n = 10, 37%). Conclusion: Long-acting somatostatin analogues are effective in glycemic control of patients with CHI. However, in 37% of all patients increased liver enzymes were observed. It is important to monitor liver function in all patients receiving long-acting somatostatin analogue therapy. (C) 2017 S.     Mapping the Complex Morphology of Cell Interactions with Nanowire Substrates Using FIB-SEM

    Using high resolution focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) we study the details of cell-nanostructure interactions using serial block face imaging. 3T3 Fibroblast cellular monolayers are cultured on flat glass as a control surface and on two types of nanostructured scaffold substrates made from silicon black (Nanograss) with low- and high nanowire density. After culturing for 72 hours the cells were fixed, heavy metal stained, embedded in resin, and processed with FIB-SEM block face imaging without removing the substrate. The sample preparation procedure, image acquisition and image post-processing were specifically optimised for cellular monolayers cultured on nanostructured substrates. Cells display a wide range of interactions with the nanostructures depending on the surface morphology, but also greatly varying from one cell to another on the same substrate, illustrating a wide phenotypic variability. Depending on the substrate and cell, we observe that cells could for instance: break the nanowires and engulf them, flatten the nanowires or simply reside on top of them. Given the complexity of interactions, we have categorised our observations and created an overview map. The results demonstrate that detailed nanoscale resolution images are required to begin understanding the wide variety of individual cells' interactions with a structured substrate. The map will provide a framework for light microscopy studies of such interactions indicating what modes of interactions must be considered

    Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least 4m4m. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the 6.5m6.5m James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible.
