Investigation of microwave transitions and nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in anti-relaxation-coated cells
Using laser optical pumping, widths and frequency shifts are determined for
microwave transitions between ground-state hyperfine components of Rb
and Rb atoms contained in vapor cells with alkane anti-relaxation
coatings. The results are compared with data on Zeeman relaxation obtained in
nonlinear magneto-optical rotation (NMOR) experiments, a comparison important
for quantitative understanding of spin-relaxation mechanisms in coated cells.
By comparing cells manufactured over a forty-year period we demonstrate the
long-term stability of coated cells, an important property for atomic clocks
and magnetometers
Investigation of Anti-Relaxation Coatings for Alkali-Metal Vapor Cells Using Surface Science Techniques
Many technologies based on cells containing alkali-metal atomic vapor benefit
from the use of anti-relaxation surface coatings in order to preserve atomic
spin polarization. In particular, paraffin has been used for this purpose for
several decades and has been demonstrated to allow an atom to experience up to
10,000 collisions with the walls of its container without depolarizing, but the
details of its operation remain poorly understood. We apply modern surface and
bulk techniques to the study of paraffin coatings, in order to characterize the
properties that enable the effective preservation of alkali spin polarization.
These methods include Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential
scanning calorimetry, atomic force microscopy, near-edge X-ray absorption fine
structure spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We also compare
the light-induced atomic desorption yields of several different paraffin
materials. Experimental results include the determination that crystallinity of
the coating material is unnecessary, and the detection of C=C double bonds
present within a particular class of effective paraffin coatings. Further study
should lead to the development of more robust paraffin anti-relaxation
coatings, as well as the design and synthesis of new classes of coating

Vacuum Squeezing in Atomic Media via Self-Rotation
When linearly polarized light propagates through a medium in which
elliptically polarized light would undergo self-rotation, squeezed vacuum can
appear in the orthogonal polarization. A simple relationship between
self-rotation and the degree of vacuum squeezing is developed. Taking into
account absorption, we find the optimum conditions for squeezing in any medium
that can produce self-rotation. We then find analytic expressions for the
amount of vacuum squeezing produced by an atomic vapor when light is
near-resonant with a transition between various low-angular-momentum states.
Finally, we consider a gas of multi-level Rb atoms, and analyze squeezing for

The source counts of submillimetre galaxies detected at 1.1 mm
The source counts of galaxies discovered at sub-millimetre and millimetre
wavelengths provide important information on the evolution of infrared-bright
galaxies. We combine the data from six blank-field surveys carried out at 1.1
mm with AzTEC, totalling 1.6 square degrees in area with root-mean-square
depths ranging from 0.4 to 1.7 mJy, and derive the strongest constraints to
date on the 1.1 mm source counts at flux densities S(1100) = 1-12 mJy. Using
additional data from the AzTEC Cluster Environment Survey to extend the counts
to S(1100) ~ 20 mJy, we see tentative evidence for an enhancement relative to
the exponential drop in the counts at S(1100) ~ 13 mJy and a smooth connection
to the bright source counts at >20 mJy measured by the South Pole Telescope;
this excess may be due to strong lensing effects. We compare these counts to
predictions from several semi-analytical and phenomenological models and find
that for most the agreement is quite good at flux densities > 4 mJy; however,
we find significant discrepancies (>3sigma) between the models and the observed
1.1 mm counts at lower flux densities, and none of them are consistent with the
observed turnover in the Euclidean-normalised counts at S(1100) < 2 mJy. Our
new results therefore may require modifications to existing evolutionary models
for low luminosity galaxies. Alternatively, the discrepancy between the
measured counts at the faint end and predictions from phenomenological models
could arise from limited knowledge of the spectral energy distributions of

Glutamine Acts as a Neuroprotectant against DNA Damage, Beta-Amyloid and H2O2-Induced Stress
Glutamine is the most abundant free amino acid in the human blood stream and is ‘conditionally essential’ to cells. Its intracellular levels are regulated both by the uptake of extracellular glutamine via specific transport systems and by its intracellular synthesis by glutamine synthetase (GS). Adding to the regulatory complexity, when extracellular glutamine is reduced GS protein levels rise. Unfortunately, this excess GS can be maladaptive. GS overexpression is neurotoxic especially if the cells are in a low-glutamine medium. Similarly, in low glutamine, the levels of multiple stress response proteins are reduced rendering cells hypersensitive to H2O2, zinc salts and DNA damage. These altered responses may have particular relevance to neurodegenerative diseases of aging. GS activity and glutamine levels are lower in the Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain, and a fraction of AD hippocampal neurons have dramatically increased GS levels compared with control subjects. We validated the importance of these observations by showing that raising glutamine levels in the medium protects cultured neuronal cells against the amyloid peptide, Aβ. Further, a 10-day course of dietary glutamine supplementation reduced inflammation-induced neuronal cell cycle activation, tau phosphorylation and ATM-activation in two different mouse models of familial AD while raising the levels of two synaptic proteins, VAMP2 and synaptophysin. Together, our observations suggest that healthy neuronal cells require both intracellular and extracellular glutamine, and that the neuroprotective effects of glutamine supplementation may prove beneficial in the treatment of AD
Resonant nonlinear magneto-optical effects in atoms
In this article, we review the history, current status, physical mechanisms,
experimental methods, and applications of nonlinear magneto-optical effects in
atomic vapors. We begin by describing the pioneering work of Macaluso and
Corbino over a century ago on linear magneto-optical effects (in which the
properties of the medium do not depend on the light power) in the vicinity of
atomic resonances, and contrast these effects with various nonlinear
magneto-optical phenomena that have been studied both theoretically and
experimentally since the late 1960s. In recent years, the field of nonlinear
magneto-optics has experienced a revival of interest that has led to a number
of developments, including the observation of ultra-narrow (1-Hz)
magneto-optical resonances, applications in sensitive magnetometry, nonlinear
magneto-optical tomography, and the possibility of a search for parity- and

Distribution pattern of psoriasis, anxiety and depression as possible causes of sexual dysfunction in patients with moderate to severe psoriasis
BACKGROUND:
Psoriasis may significantly impair sexual function. Depression and organic factors appear to play a key role in this relation. However, beyond genital psoriasis, the importance of the disease's distribution patterns has not been considered.
OBJECTIVES:
To research sexual function in psoriasis patients and investigate the roles of anxiety, depression and psoriasis' distribution patterns in sexual dysfunction.
METHODS:
A comparative study matched for sex and age was performed. Eighty patients with moderate to severe psoriasis and 80 healthy controls were included. The participants completed the Massachusetts General Hospital-Sexual Functioning Questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Self-Administered Psoriasis Area and Severity Index.
RESULTS:
Psoriasis was associated with sexual dysfunction, odds ratio=5.5 (CI 95% 2.6-11.3; p<0.001). Certain distribution patterns of psoriasis, involving specific body regions, were associated with an increase in sexual dysfunction in the group presenting the disease, odds ratio 7.9 (CI 95% 2.3-33.4; p<0.001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified anxiety and depression, and the involvement of these specific areas, as possible independent risk factors for sexual dysfunction in patients with moderate to severe psoriasis.
CONCLUSION:
This study identifies body areas potentially related to sexual dysfunction, independently of anxiety and depression, in psoriasis patients. The results suggest that the assessment of sexual dysfunction and the involvement of these body areas should be considered as disease severity criteria when choosing the treatment for psoriasis patients
Physician career satisfaction within specialties
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Specialty-specific data on career satisfaction may be useful for understanding physician workforce trends and for counseling medical students about career options.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We analyzed cross-sectional data from 6,590 physicians (response rate, 53%) in Round 4 (2004-2005) of the Community Tracking Study Physician Survey. The dependent variable ranged from +1 to -1 and measured satisfaction and dissatisfaction with career. Forty-two specialties were analyzed with survey-adjusted linear regressions</p> <p>Results</p> <p>After adjusting for physician, practice, and community characteristics, the following specialties had significantly higher satisfaction levels than family medicine: pediatric emergency medicine (regression coefficient = 0.349); geriatric medicine (0.323); other pediatric subspecialties (0.270); neonatal/prenatal medicine (0.266); internal medicine and pediatrics (combined practice) (0.250); pediatrics (0.250); dermatology (0.249);and child and adolescent psychiatry (0.203). The following specialties had significantly lower satisfaction levels than family medicine: neurological surgery (-0.707); pulmonary critical care medicine (-0.273); nephrology (-0.206); and obstetrics and gynecology (-0.188). We also found satisfaction was significantly and positively related to income and employment in a medical school but negatively associated with more than 50 work-hours per-week, being a full-owner of the practice, greater reliance on managed care revenue, and uncontrollable lifestyle. We observed no statistically significant gender differences and no differences between African-Americans and whites.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Career satisfaction varied across specialties. A number of stakeholders will likely be interested in these findings including physicians in specialties that rank high and low and students contemplating specialty. Our findings regarding "less satisfied" specialties should elicit concern from residency directors and policy makers since they appear to be in critical areas of medicine.</p
Vitamin D and Its Role During Pregnancy in Attaining Optimal Health of Mother and Fetus
Despite its discovery a hundred years ago, vitamin D has emerged as one of the most controversial nutrients and prohormones of the 21st century. Its role in calcium metabolism and bone health is undisputed but its role in immune function and long-term health is debated. There are clear indicators from in vitro and animal in vivo studies that point to vitamin D’s indisputable role in both innate and adaptive immunity; however, the translation of these findings to clinical practice, including the care of the pregnant woman, has not occurred. Until recently, there has been a paucity of data from randomized controlled trials to establish clear cut beneficial effects of vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy. An overview of vitamin metabolism, states of deficiency, and the results of recent clinical trials conducted in the U.S. are presented with an emphasis on what is known and what questions remain to be answered
