    Going the Distance Part 2: Five Ways of Teaching an Extension Course: Elive, Blackboard, Teleconference, Correspondence, and Face-to-Face

    Remote and widely dispersed clientele in Alaska create a need for effective distance-delivery programs. Extension agents often travel via small airplane, snow machine, or boat to teach face-to-face classes in off-road communities. Effective and more cost-efficient delivery methods are needed. We taught a course for beginning farmers residing throughout Alaska using five delivery methods: Elluminate Live!, Blackboard, teleconference, correspondence, and face-to-face. We evaluated these delivery methods based on five areas: accessibility of delivery method, course completion, knowledge gain, plans to use skills, and student satisfaction. Our findings will help Extension professionals design distance-delivered programs suited to their target audience

    Total Synthesis of the Bovine Pancreatic Trypsin Inhibitor (BPTI) and the Protein Diastereomer [Gly37D-Ala]BPTI using Boc Chemistry Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis

    Bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor (BPTI) is a well‐studied model for investigation of protein folding and stability. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of wild‐type BPTI and a diastereomeric protein analogue [Gly37D‐Ala]BPTI. Each 58‐residue polypeptide chain was made by native chemical ligation of two peptide segments, BPTI[1‐29]‐αthioester and the appropriate version of the Cys30‐58 BPTI peptide segment. Boc chemistry in situ neutralization solid phase synthesis was used to prepare the peptide segment reactants. The resulting full‐length polypeptide chains were folded in a cysteine/cystine redox buffer to give synthetic protein molecules containing three disulfide bonds. The diastereomeric analogue [Gly37D‐Ala]BPTI folded as efficiently as the native protein. Synthetic proteins were characterized by analytical LCMS and by natural‐abundance 1H‐15N HSQC NMR fingerprinting. These results illustrate the power of Boc chemistry peptide synthesis and its utility for the total chemical synthesis of protein molecules

    Flipping the Model: A Values-Based Consortial Approach to Journal Negotiations

    When negotiating journal pricing, the disadvantages libraries face are well documented. In addition to financially incompatible acquisition models that are out of sync with both library budgets and any predicted growth, libraries are also presented with rising inflationary costs, content added to an already overloaded system, and vendor consolidation. Pricing issues are further exacerbated by traditional negotiations, where libraries begin negotiations based on the offers made by publishers and vendors. These offers too often are predicated on historical spend and coupled with list prices that come with few explanations for their sums. Big package deals, that arguably expand access to resources and may lower costs on an article basis, have also increased overall costs and pushed out diverse resources. In attempting to move away from such deals institutions are faced with similar pricing for dramatically reduced access. The difficulties in navigating our way to a sustainable model become clear when the loss of researcher access is coupled with the increased staffing needed to manage individual subscriptions. New, and potentially viable pathways are beginning to emerge, including open access initiatives and the application of new models, such as read/publish. Although these pathways are not yet fully formed, they are promising developments that attempt to more holistically account for the contributions of the academy, the public good, and the costs of publishing. This presentation detailed the efforts of a task force within VIVA (Virginia’s academic library consortium) to create a bridge-solution between the current acquisition model and the future vision of its members. It creates a space to rethink what these deals could be and relies on consortial criteria to determine the value of content. The approach remains conscious of the real long-term institutional trust and communication risks to such endeavors, and is built on concerted, collective action

    Thermal Conductivity of Polymer/Nano-filler Blends

    To improve the thermal conductivity of an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer, Elvax 260 was compounded with three carbon based nano-fillers. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), vapor grown carbon nanofibers (CNF) and expanded graphite (EG) were investigated. In an attempt to improve compatibility between the Elvax and nanofillers, MWCNTs and EGs were modified through non covalent and covalent attachment of alkyl groups. Ribbons were extruded to form samples in which the nanofillers were aligned, and samples were also fabricated by compression molding in which the nano-fillers were randomly oriented. The thermal properties were evaluated by DSC and TGA, and mechanical properties of the aligned samples were determined by tensile testing. The degree of dispersion and alignment of the nanoparticles were investigated using high-resolution scanning electron microscopy. Thermal conductivity measurements were performed using a Nanoflash technique. The thermal conductivity of the samples was measured in both the direction of alignment as well as perpendicular to that direction. The results of this study will be presented

    Photo-elicitation: using photographs to read retail interiors through consumers' eyes

    Researchers studying experiences in retail environments have typically restricted their attention towards examining the influence of individual atmospheric variables upon customer behavior. In this respect photographs and video are common environmental simulation techniques. This research approach not only concerns researchers active in consumer culture theory, but also interior architects and retail designers. As holistic inspired practitioners, they maintain that interiors function as 'Gestalt' environments, interacting with their users. Inspired by their viewpoints, in this paper, the authors reflect on the use of the inductive, holistically inspired method of photo-elicitation in research concerning experiences in retail environments. In addition, they report on the application of photo-elicitation in two empirical projects. The findings demonstrate the value of photo-elicitation in gaining insight into customer experiences in retail interiors

    Alcohol Trajectories over Three Years in a Swedish Residence Hall Student Population

    Although it is known that college students have a high alcohol consumption, less is known about the long-term drinking trajectories amongst college students and, in particular, students living in residence halls, known to be high-risk drinkers. Over four consecutive years, the drinking habits of 556 Swedish residence hall students were analyzed. The main instruments for measuring outcome were AUDIT (Alcohol Use Identification Disorders Test), SIP (Short Index of Problems) and eBAC (estimated Blood Alcohol Concentration). The drinking trajectories among Swedish residence hall students showed stable and decreasing drinking patterns, with age and gender being predictors of group membership
