Lunar concrete for construction
Feasibility of using concrete for lunar-base construction has been discussed recently without relevant data for the effects of vacuum on concrete. Experimental studies performed earlier at Los Alamos have shown that concrete is stable in vacuum with no deterioration of its quality as measured by the compressive strength. Various considerations of using concrete successfully on the moon are provided in this paper along with specific conclusions from the existing data base

Effective diffusion constant in a two dimensional medium of charged point scatterers
We obtain exact results for the effective diffusion constant of a two
dimensional Langevin tracer particle in the force field generated by charged
point scatterers with quenched positions. We show that if the point scatterers
have a screened Coulomb (Yukawa) potential and are uniformly and independently
distributed then the effective diffusion constant obeys the
Volgel-Fulcher-Tammann law where it vanishes. Exact results are also obtained
for pure Coulomb scatterers frozen in an equilibrium configuration of the same

Continuum Derrida Approach to Drift and Diffusivity in Random Media
By means of rather general arguments, based on an approach due to Derrida
that makes use of samples of finite size, we analyse the effective diffusivity
and drift tensors in certain types of random medium in which the motion of the
particles is controlled by molecular diffusion and a local flow field with
known statistical properties. The power of the Derrida method is that it uses
the equilibrium probability distribution, that exists for each {\em finite}
sample, to compute asymptotic behaviour at large times in the {\em infinite}
medium. In certain cases, where this equilibrium situation is associated with a
vanishing microcurrent, our results demonstrate the equality of the
renormalization processes for the effective drift and diffusivity tensors. This
establishes, for those cases, a Ward identity previously verified only to
two-loop order in perturbation theory in certain models. The technique can be
applied also to media in which the diffusivity exhibits spatial fluctuations.
We derive a simple relationship between the effective diffusivity in this case
and that for an associated gradient drift problem that provides an interesting

‘Don’t just travel’: thinking poetically on the way to professional knowledge
This paper describes how the medium of ‘found poetry’ is incorporated into a doctoral programme for nurses, educators and allied health and social care professionals at the start of their various doctoral journeys. It advocates a narrative practice approach to issues of researcher identity and reflexivity. ‘Finding’ the poems begins with the creation of collages as representational anchors for students to talk about themselves, their professional practice, their hopes and expectations of the doctoral experience, and their research ideas. (Re)presenting their transcribed talk as poetry involves culling and playing with words, phrases and segments, making changes in spacing, lines and rhythm to arrive at an evocative distillation (Butler-Kisber, 2002). This process enables each person to bring stories and/or fragments of experience into critical engagement with others. Poetic thinking functions pedagogically, helping students find a critical voice to enliven and hone their reflexive writing in relation to their doctoral experience and their research positioning. Arts-based methods of inquiry are an ongoing topic of interest in research communities. Found poetry is a useful starting point to explore creative means by which research participants can recount their stories, and equally, by which researchers can witness and disseminate what they have to tell.self funde
Maintenance N-acetyl cysteine treatment for bipolar disorder : a double-blind randomised placebo controlled trial
Background N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a glutathione precursor that has been shown to have antidepressant efficacy in a placebo-controlled trial. The current study aimed to investigate the maintenance effects of NAC following eight weeks of open-label treatment for bipolar disorder.Method The efficacy of a double blind randomized placebo controlled trial of 2 g/day NAC as adjunct maintenance treatment for bipolar disorder was examined. Participants (n = 149) had a Montgomery Asberg Depression Rating Score of [greater than or equal to]12 at trial entry and, after eight weeks of open-label NAC treatment, were randomized to adjunctive NAC or placebo, in addition to treatment as usual. Participants (primarily outpatients) were recruited through public and private services and through newspaper advertisements. Time to intervention for a mood episode was the primary endpoint of the study, and changes in mood symptoms, functionality and quality of life measures were secondary outcomes.Results There was a substantial decrease in symptoms during the eight-week open-label NAC treatment phase. During the subsequent double-blind phase, there was minimal further change in outcome measures with scores remaining low. Consequently, from this low plateau, between-group differences did not emerge on recurrence, clinical functioning or quality of life measures.Conclusions There were no significant between-group differences in recurrence or symptomatic outcomes during the maintenance phase of the trial; however, these findings may be confounded by limitations. Dwarf elliptical galaxies in Centaurus A group: stellar populations in AM 1339-445 and AM 1343-452
We study the red giant populations of two dE galaxies, AM 1339-445 and AM
1343-452, with the aim of investigating the number and luminosity of any upper
asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars present. The galaxies are members of the
Centaurus A group (D~3.8 Mpc) and are classified as outlying (R~350 kpc)
satellites of Cen A. The analysis is based on near-IR photometry for individual
red giant stars, derived from images obtained with ISAAC on the VLT. The
photometry, along with optical data derived from WFPC2 images retrieved from
the HST science archive, enable us to investigate the stellar populations of
the dEs in the vicinity of the red giant branch (RGB) tip. In both systems we
find stars above the RGB tip, which we interpret as intermediate-age upper-AGB
stars. The presence of such stars is indicative of extended star formation in
these dEs similar to that seen in many, but not all, dEs in the Local Group.
For AM 1339-445, the brightest of the upper-AGB stars have Mbol~-4.5 while
those in AM 1343-452 have Mbol~-4.8 mag. These luminosities suggest ages of
approximately 6.5+/-1 and 4+/-1 Gyr as estimates for the epoch of the last
episode of significant star formation in these systems. In both cases the
number of upper-AGB stars suggests that ~15% of the total stellar population is
in the form of intermediate-age stars, considerably less than is the case for

Assessing the Completeness of Reporting in Preclinical Oncolytic Virus Therapy Studies
Irreproducibility of preclinical findings could be a significant barrier to the “bench-to-bedside” development of oncolytic viruses (OVs). A contributing factor is the incomplete and non-transparent reporting of study methodology and design. Using the NIH Principles and Guidelines for Reporting Preclinical Research, a core set of seven recommendations, we evaluated the completeness of reporting of preclinical OV studies. We also developed an evidence map identifying the current trends in OV research. A systematic search of MEDLINE and Embase identified all relevant articles published over an 18 month period. We screened 1,554 articles, and 236 met our a priori-defined inclusion criteria. Adenovirus (43%) was the most commonly used viral platform. Frequently investigated cancers included colorectal (14%), skin (12%), and breast (11%). Xenograft implantation (61%) in mice (96%) was the most common animal model. The use of preclinical reporting guidelines was listed in 0.4% of articles. Biological and technical replicates were completely reported in 1% of studies, statistics in 49%, randomization in 1%, blinding in 2%, sample size estimation in 0%, and inclusion/exclusion criteria in 0%. Overall, completeness of reporting in the preclinical OV therapy literature is poor. This may hinder efforts to interpret, replicate, and ultimately translate promising preclinical OV findings
CORS Baade-Wesselink distance to the LMC NGC 1866 blue populous cluster
We used Optical, Near Infrared photometry and radial velocity data for a
sample of 11 Cepheids belonging to the young LMC blue populous cluster NGC 1866
to estimate their radii and distances on the basis of the CORS Baade-Wesselink
method. This technique, based on an accurate calibration of the surface
brightness as a function of (U-B), (V-K) colors, allows us to estimate,
simultaneously, the linear radius and the angular diameter of Cepheid
variables, and consequently to derive their distance. A rigorous error estimate
on radius and distances was derived by using Monte Carlo simulations. Our
analysis gives a distance modulus for NGC 1866 of 18.51+/-0.03 mag, which is in

Control of intestinal stem cell function and proliferation by mitochondrial pyruvate metabolism.
Most differentiated cells convert glucose to pyruvate in the cytosol through glycolysis, followed by pyruvate oxidation in the mitochondria. These processes are linked by the mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC), which is required for efficient mitochondrial pyruvate uptake. In contrast, proliferative cells, including many cancer and stem cells, perform glycolysis robustly but limit fractional mitochondrial pyruvate oxidation. We sought to understand the role this transition from glycolysis to pyruvate oxidation plays in stem cell maintenance and differentiation. Loss of the MPC in Lgr5-EGFP-positive stem cells, or treatment of intestinal organoids with an MPC inhibitor, increases proliferation and expands the stem cell compartment. Similarly, genetic deletion of the MPC in Drosophila intestinal stem cells also increases proliferation, whereas MPC overexpression suppresses stem cell proliferation. These data demonstrate that limiting mitochondrial pyruvate metabolism is necessary and sufficient to maintain the proliferation of intestinal stem cells
